### Personal or business brand? []

Should you grow your business branding or your personal brand? It's a question I get asked all the time. I'm going to answer this question in this video in a conversation I have with the member inside content lab. — Personal branding is like a big focus for me now. I have my personal Instagram account. That's like where all my friends, all my family, people that I've known for like 20, 30 years, they follow me on there. — My niche is like handcrafted furniture and I really want to create content, not so much sell my like agency or whatnot, but like actually like create content that is like useful for them. Once they start doing it, they'll realize like it's so much work and then there's so much to learn that they'll like, well, this guy was like telling us how to do all this stuff. — Yep. That's how you do it. — I just finished my first reel, so I'm ready to post it. My concern is like a lot of the content is going to be more business focused about like advertising strategy and all that stuff. What's your thought about this? Do I just do it on my own personal or separate? — Keep doing on your personal. What will happen is the personal allows you to be you, express yourself however you want, and then you'll use the corporate to scrape. Eventually when you get more serious about this, somebody will do that for you. — You know how like there's theoretically separation between Elon and Tesla or Tim Cook and Apple. — That example that you use resonated with like really heavily — cuz like my personal like has years of content — and like a lot of it right now like if I start posting right now I'm like, "Hey, that's me and my wife like at this on this vacation or whatever, you know? " — So what I would do is I would archive a bunch of that. Clean up the feed now that your intention is a little bit different. Leave the stuff that's personal but is relevant to the message you want to talk about. What about like all the people that are like cuz I have like 2500 followers. — Don't worry about them. — Do not worry about them. They're not there to do what you want to do either. So when you change, your audience changes. I share content that I feel like it's expresses who I am and what I'm going through, but also to be mindful that not everybody wants to know like, oh, I walked the dog today. That's not relevant. — There's aspects of my life that like it's not that I don't mind other people knowing about it. like whatever that people like I don't know like I'm just like I don't want to necessarily want to share this with like — you would not share I'll tell you something about that kind of content — I follow lots of people it's personal account — and then every once in a while in my feed I'm like what the hell is this and I look them up I go oh my god I'm nearly going to unfollow them because they post that thing — and it's just like so like I don't want to see a photo of you and your kid and I know you're really proud as a parent but that's not correct why I followed you — I followed you because you speak about something I care about correct — and as long as you continue to do that I'll continue to follow you that's why I First thing you do is you go and clean up the feed. Like in the early days of Instagram, we would post whatever. There's no idea, no strategy, no theme, no messaging, no consistency. Well, for me, so I got into like very early. So a lot of my like content is like photography, lifestyle. So a lot of my feed is kind of like — very curated, I guess. So I don't have anything that I'm like — ashamed. But it's like, no, no. It's not like that. It's like what do you want people to know you for and follow you for? And if it's out of alignment, I would just archive it. — You don't have to delete it. just archive it. — So you're saying like don't do the like Tim from Tagle and kind of like have like a personal brand thing and then just private like personal — No, that's like too many Well, you can do that if you want to start from zero. — Yeah, I wouldn't do it. — Okay. So when I figured out what I was doing, I archived, got rid of all that other junk and then I grew and then I'm like, well, this is now no longer relevant to So it's a constant pruning. — Okay. — That's all you do, — right? If people follow you, they unfollow you. It's totally cool. Cuz I

### Find Your Content Alignment [3:14]

Yeah, cuz I have a lot of followers that are like following me from like that time when I was like into photography and like doing all that sort of stuff. — Them I don't care about. Like if they unfollow me, I don't give — You got to not give about anything. — True. — You're going to just show up and do what you want to do. He and I were talking about this. He goes, "Chris, well, I'm trying to get you over a million followers, but I can see like 4,000 people unfollowed you. 4,500 people followed you. " It's like, it's just going to happen. It just — Yeah. — And I don't look at I don't even know what the numbers are — because like the way that I'm looking at it is like even like I'm not looking at it even from like a numbers perspective. My niche is so small in a way. Like it's a good niche cuz there's enough there to support like business and like all that stuff. Realistically, if even if I had 100 people following me, but they were like relevant in that niche. That's great cuz like — that's great, but that's not what you want to do. just go in on what you are passionate about that aligns with your business interest and prune everything else and over time that'll change again and you just keep evolving it. — Cuz I was literally recording the video the other day and I sent it to an editor and she just sent it back. I was a little surprised cuz I thought I would hate myself cuz it's a real and I haven't done any reals. — The thing is you have to uh keep doing that. You just got to keep putting stuff out. — That's what my wife was like cuz I showed her the video and she's just like, "Oh, like what if you fix this and this? " I was like, "I don't want to fix anything. " I was just like, — I recorded it. This is the first video. It's going to suck — or my love, but you know what? Yeah, — I'm just going to post it. Like, there's a mistake in there and I'm like, it's easy to kind of like ignore or whatever. I was like and I was like, I'll — who cares? Okay, cool. That's what I got. — That's great.
