### Intro - Vulnerability Online []

vulnerability is not a thing you try it's either You're vulnerable or you're not inside of Academia and corporate culture in professional and within schools you do a certain thing so that you have acceptance and you have respect so you're using it some kind of gimmick to grow your audience and when you didn't get the result that you wanted you reverted back to what you were doing before and I think the more we lean into our ethnicity our culture our idiosyncratic nature the more people will love us and it's not even about that because we need to love us there was a Creator in the digital marketing space I can't remember her name unfortunately but I'll give you the gist of the post and she was saying actually do not show up vulnerable anymore I've been showing up vulnerable and it's been weaponized against me and it had didn't really move the needle forward from a business standpoint so when I hear that I'd love to hear your take because I think to these people and you know I'm also in many entrepreneurial circles with the Rah you know machismo men that are like personal branding money marketing all that kind of stuff I think you're really idealistic a little bit in those World those people would say you're idealistic are you going to make money I don't care so it's not about making money I already I tried to say that and I'll say it again so what this person did was show up and present their vulnerability as a means to get more of an audience wrong already cuz that's like you or me saying poor me

### Embracing Ethnicity and Culture in Personal Branding [1:20]

I've struggled so much in my life don't you feel so bad for me that is like I hate to say it I don't there's probably a better expression it's like pity me and let's all get together and share like how the world has been so unfair to us the kind of vulnerability that I'm talking about is I've accepted that I have certain shortcomings I've healed from it and more importantly I've grown from it I've understood why these things that are so ugly that most people don't like have made me who I am like I grew up relatively poor as an immigrant until my parents worked their way up to the upper middle class and had a strange relationship with money and I talk about this being bullied about being singled out and being thrown racial slurs from people who didn't know me at all because they thought it was fun I don't use it to oh won't you feel sorry for me Isn't it so pitiful that I've had to go through this no because I've learned to lean into the things that make me different and to embrace the entire story not just the part that I think you want to hear sometimes I talk about being a good father bad father a good husband a bad husband and it's because all that makes me Chris you can say things like this you can say I don't give an f about what people think or say because you're financially all right you have the credibility with the Ws and the work and people pay you lots of

### The Problem with Faking Vulnerability for Attention [2:45]

money so you don't care anymore what are we supposed to do how do we get to that place and I'm going to use a line from Carlos aora because Carlos aora has the most brilliant business card and contract in the world from a design perspective he goes you pay me I do work you make lots of changes I'm less interested you know he has this whole contract it's very attitudinal it's legendary stuff and when I ask Carlos aura about it he goes I am Carlos Sor because I've had that I didn't write the letter because I'm Carlos Sor I am Carlos Sor because of that letter so here's the thing let me take it back to this point and I've shared the story before I'm going to share one more time my very dear friend patrula ranas who teaches that art center is a very Poise articulate woman and she's been in the educational system a professional designer for many years right we've become friends I didn't have the benefit of having her as instructor but I remember in the clubhouse days probably right at the end you know I'm on a call and I'm doing my thing and I ril the room up just like how I'm riling us up right now right when you say something I don't believe I'm like nope I don't agree I'm going to disagree with you right now because I like critical conversations because you might come back and say qu Chris here's the counter to your counter and I'm like oh I didn't think of it that way before but more often than not I usually destroy people and that's fine I don't mean to destroy people but they don't really think about the things they think about

### Why Being True to Yourself Attracts the Right Audience [4:00]

and I do so I say whatever I'm going to say and I do it and then as always we do a little postmortem and patruda calls me up she goes Chris what you think I the call I'm like oh was good she goes I think it was pretty good too and I could tell the hesitancy in her voice and then and she goes you know Chris I think people misunderstand you I'm like oh yeah because you can come across it's a little abrasive and opinionated and I think more people would love you if you just learn how to edit that part I said P Tru that they did not misunderstand me I am abrasive I am opinionated I'm not trying to shock people but sometimes the things I'm saying is shocking I said I am exactly who I am they got me just right there's nothing to miscommunicate and she goes but more people would like you I'm like more people like me because I am this so in her world inside of Academia and corporate culture in professional and within schools you do a certain thing so that you have acceptance and you have respect and then you can influence certain decision makers and that's the game that's played and you know what I think she's a very kind thoughtful intentional Communicator I didn't describe myself the same way you might but that's okay I'm just very direct if I think something I'm going to say it I try not to hurt people but I do say

### Lessons from Creators Who Fully Embrace Their Identity [5:15]

things that sometimes can hurt people because I could have chosen a more genial way of saying it but I just choose not to because I want to go for impact not for feelings you know I don't want to mind my manners so that you feel okay I just want to make sure you understand what I'm saying now we tie this back to Aaron drin he goes on stage he's a big guy you know I don't know how many pounds he is but he's between two to 300 lb I think he goes on and Stage he like I'm Aaron James drain who tells you their middle name nobody it's kind of a weird thing right my name is Aaron James Tron I'm 40 years old I'm from Detroit Michigan I'm doing everything I can to make it in the little leagues of Portland Oregon I don't wear pants and I wash the jean jacket cuz it's a formal event he's telling you everything you need to know about this guy you can judge me you can hate me he talks about his love for Obama and Bernie Sanders how he doesn't like Trump or Kid Rock he likes certain bands he hates other bands and you know he gets some booze and hisses here and there but he don't care he goes oh oh tough crowd huh all right he just Embraces it and that's what I learned and you know who else I learned this from Hassan minhaj who's been through a turbulent year for some of the things he's talked about that were somewhat fabricated but what I saw when he did homecoming his comedy special was a really beautiful thing a brown man first anchor a comedy night talk show was coming out and mixing English with his native language celebrating his whole culture and just going back and forth he embraced all of it his identity and I just thought that was really beautiful man now I can see the thesis which is you can do this at a national International level and I think the more we lean into our ethnicity our culture our idiosyncratic nature

### Kurt Cobain's Words of Wisdom - Outro [7:00]

the more people will love us and it's not even about that because we need to love us vulnerability is not a thing you try it's either You're vulnerable or you're not so you're using it some kind of gimmick to grow your audience and when you didn't get the result that you wanted you reverted back to what you were doing before like I am who I am all of you want to unfollow me I will miss you but I'm going to be okay cuz I want to be surrounded by more people who want to show up for me being me and there's a quote here and I think from Kurt Cain I'd rather be hated for the person I am than to be loved for the person that I'm not
