### [0:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAP6FfTGHXA) Introduction: The Power of Failure

they interviewed these four successful entrepreneurs that were self-made Millionaires and they asked them how many ideas did you go through before you came upon uh your success what made you the millions the median uh number was like 20 something double your failure rate recently meaning like last year we had this Our Guest Seth Goden come on our show and he said something that caught me off guard what the secret

### [0:25](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAP6FfTGHXA&t=25s) Interview with Self-Made Millionaires: 20 Ideas Before Success

Innovation say well whoever fails the most wins what if you fail isn't it over it goes no because what we're talking about is the ability to play the game the longest and there's a couple things I want to share with you on this idea whoever fails the most wins so he's saying that what we want to do is have small failures that we can learn from when most of us think of the word fail we think catastrophic failure right we think it's over but catastrophic failure for most people is bankruptcy uh maybe prison forclosure so there's a lot of ways to failure so whenever we look at this fail we now feel negative we have a negative emotion about this word fail so what we do is we do everything in our power to avoid failing so nobody's happy about these words here I don't think right so it causes a stress so what we do is we assign a word and emotion

### [1:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAP6FfTGHXA&t=75s) Seth Godin's Insight: "Whoever Fails the Most Wins"

around this moment but what we need to do is we need to try and to flip this completely upside down right we need to think about failure in a very positive way there's a book called rework by Jason freed and David Hanson they're the guys from 37 signals base camp people he says Okay the reason why this seems so scary is because we're going to make a gamble right and the way that we gamble is this is we're going to have one big Innovative idea that's usually how people think Innovation let's all let's go for it so let's say we have a

### [1:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAP6FfTGHXA&t=105s) Redefining Failure: Avoiding Catastrophic Losses

$100,000 budget in R& D to go for it so we make one giant gamble their hypothesis is don't make one $100,000 gamble make 10 $110,000 gambles and as you do each one as you fail apply the learning forward so you will never actually reach this point because hopefully by the sixth time you fail you blown uh 60k at that point when you gain all of what doesn't work so their whole theory is and this is directly applicable to what sath is saying whoever fails the most wins so they're

designing their culture in the company to fail often and all the time they just don't want to have one giant failure CU that will syn the company here's the good news if it fails and we've tried our best then we know we don't have anything to worry about if it succeeds we disrupt ourselves this is what Netflix has done they said physical media let's try streaming and initially it was just a gamble they didn't have a ton of content but they started doing that and it's taking over the business it's been so successful that it's created a um an army of clones from Disney plus Apple TV from Amazon Prime Hulu CVS ler Prime it's like HBO it's just it's ridiculous now like the Kodak thing it's its own thing too like Netflix and chill you know that's like yeah Netflix phrase at that's right and a very positive Association but that will only last so long so let's see what the next Arc of the jump is I can't see it cuz this is not my space it could be content exclusive content we'll see this

### [3:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAP6FfTGHXA&t=195s) Netflix's Success Story: From DVDs to Streaming Giants

is the idea so there's a couple other Concepts here about failure what you want to do is you want to make a series of small gambles and apply learnings forward Simon syic talks about this thing he calls it the infinite game playing the infinite game also he shares a story about how he's riding in a car after speaking and talking to some Microsoft people and they're constantly trying to catch up or outmaneuver the next people and that's was their mindset so he does another talk at Apple and he's talking to them and he he's like just checking them a little bit he's like you know their phone's better than yours or their tablet's better than yours it has more features and the response that came back from the Apple employee was quite different the response he got was yeah I think their is better and what he concluded was apple does not compete

### [4:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAP6FfTGHXA&t=240s) Simon Sinek on the Infinite Game: Competing with Yourself

against other people they compete against themselves that they're playing the infinite game although they might have the best fill in the blank at that moment they will have over the Long Haul because they just keep focusing on themselves they tune out what other people are doing and they stay the course do you guys know who Thomas J Watson is and he's the founder of IBM Watson computer part of that like big blue and Watson right well he's the founder of IBM and he was asked this question like how can I be successful and his answer was double your failure rate if you want to be successful fail twice as fast on the far side of failure is Success it's going to look like a lot of losses number seven number eight number nine but that 10th idea is going to be the one that hits in the book a power of self-confidence by Brian Tracy which I referred to quite a bit too he says in this book that they interviewed these four successful entrepreneurs that were self-made Millionaires and they asked them how

mind that these self-made millionaires failed 20 plus times on average before they found the idea that worked this is what it means whoever fails the most wins so the question you should be asking yourselves if you're in a team if you're by yourself am I designing my company to fail in small iterative ways so that I can learn from my mistakes that I'm not making one giant Gamble
