Why Most Resume Advice Suck

never go over a single page for your resume two pages is totally fine always include a professional summary do not write a summary up top you need a creative format to stand out no stick with a boring layout that works these are just some of the conflicting advice you've probably come across as you write your resume not only are these comments extremely subjective but also a tactic that worked for someone else might not work for you in this video I'm not touching any of that instead I go over the most common resume mistake that's universally agreed upon then I share three examples on how to address that mistake and we will end with a specific technique that will work for whatever role you're applying for let's get

The Most Common Resume Mistake

started diving right into it the most common mistake recruiters and hiring managers final resumes bullet points that describe what the candidate did instead of quantifying their impact in simple terms did you include the right metrics AKA numbers in every single one of your bullet points taking a step back metrics is simply a unit of measurement and I say this because there's a common mission Inception among job Seekers that metrics need to be big and sexy or it doesn't count my process optimization led to 10 million dollars in cost savings changing the font in this pitch that drove 50 million US dollars in revenue for the company in reality as

How to Fix the Most Common Resume Mistake

long as your metric is relevant and answers one of these three questions how many how often or how long it's a valid metric and already exponentially better than just describing what you did and there's a very simple reason for this recruiters and high managers know that proactive workers always find a way to track their performance even when metrics aren't handed to them but enough of the theory let's look at the changes Joanna made to her resume that helped her land a job in the tech industry here's a bad bullet point that only describes what she did supervised a website renovation project basically she was a project manager for a new website launch with the goal of increasing brand awareness now as a junior employee Joanna can't just run a survey to measure the actual increase in brand awareness that takes a lot of money and time but she can ask herself is there something I did that answers how many how often or how long she decides how

Bullet Point Example 1

many is appropriate here and emails the IT team to ask for numbers like page views click-through rates and session duration types of metrics she would be familiar with as the project manager for a website launch the improved bullet point now reads drove a 15 increase in page views and a 23 increase in session duration after helping launch new website with the goal of increasing brand awareness implemented at escalation process to keep the project on track the numbers are not big nor sexy but tells a reader exactly what the end result was and what she did to get there Joanna also followed the best practice for bullet point structure from Google accomplish X as measured by y by doing Z by the way I'll share the pdf

Use Teal to Create Your Resume

version of Joanna's final resume down below but if you want to use that exact structure I highly recommend using the Resume Builder tool from today's sponsor teal if you watch my other videos you know I care a lot about detail like perfect left and right indents a subtle splash of color to stand out so I actually convinced teal to make changes to their Resume Builder to fit these standards you get started by importing your LinkedIn profile or an existing resume with one click go to the formatting section here choose the first template accent color green and you're basically 60 there the feature that really blew my mind though is that you can toggle on and off content for your resume based on the role you're applying for I've always said resumes should be hyper targeted for each role you apply to and with these toggles you can toggle on this bullet point and untoggle this for job a export it right and then for job B you untoggle this and toggle this one and Export that again you get the point and this is free like where was this when I was in college anyways sign up using the link down below give them a try let me know what you think back to coming up with relevant metrics let's

Bullet Point Example 2

take a look at another bad example fostered a strong Community among core working group to improve morale encourage transparency and best practice sharing this time by asking ourselves how often and how long we might come up with initiated and led 12 lunch and learns as a weekly team Builder activity helped prepare five Training sessions on project management tips and received 100 positive feedback from core working group and as a reader you can probably tell Joanna successfully improved morale and encourage best practice sharing without her actually saying those words okay Jeff I hear you say these are all great examples but my job does not have clear cup metrics and at best I would just be making stuff up and lying on my

Fool-Proof Technique for Anyone

resume I hear you so here's a technique I promised you at the beginning of this video to help you generate relevant metrics for whatever role you're currently working in and that technique is to open up Chachi BT or Google bard and use this prompt you are an expert resume writer with over 20 years of experience I'm writing a bullet point for an experience on my resume but I don't know how my success was measured I would describe my responsibilities and your task is to list five relevant metrics that I can include to quantify the impact of my work here's what I did and just to show you this works for literally any job let's use a real albeit extreme example from a viewer I've been taking care of a sick family member for an entire year what metrics can I even mention and here we see number of hours spent per week caring for that family member number of tasks managed simultaneously number of medical appointments scheduled maybe you came up with a system that uh that tracked appointments uh health insurance claims recovery progress all those important details if you're a student with zero work experience you can literally say I'm a sophomore in college looking to land an internship in a specific industry Consulting for example I have no prior experience at all and here you go extracurricular activities a number of networking events attended that's a really good one I would not have thought of that one number of new skills you've acquired a lot of possible metrics even
