How to Get Promoted Every 2 Years

so I just got promoted at work making this my fourth promotion in eight years but uh who's counting my mom she's counting hello darkness my old friend all jokes aside the hard truth is that my managers did 80 of the work for each one of those promotions so it's easy to feel that Career Development and advancement is out of our control but in my experience you have a 100 chance to influence that 80 so let's go over the top five most impactful things you can do to own your career let's get started tip number one create a macro micro roadmap diving

Create a Macro-Micro Roadmap

right to an example if you take these bullet points in isolation Mentor new joiners and present to senior leaders they're great for increasing visibility in the workplace but those should only come after six months of learning your core job and another six of over delivering and exceeding Expectations by the same logic if you ask for a promotion too early you have no track record no credibility if you ask for one too late well you're too late and they're already planning on promoting someone else so as you can see having a macro timeline along with micro action items gives you a very structured way to approach Career Development conversations with your manager but another way micro is what you do macro is when you do it this slide is not comprehensive by any means I just made it as reference for myself for example only after I Crush my core job what I feel confident enough to share learnings and failures with colleagues and be more explicit about career goals with my manager I'll link the slide down below but in this video we're only covering the manager portion so let me know if you want videos on the other two topics in the meantime feel free to sign up for my newsletter on Career tips how to get promoted tip number two manage up and

Manage Up, and Across

across when you join a new company or a team you should always ask your manager to introduce you to these three people first a mentor who's one step ahead of you career-wise this is not your onboarding buddy but rather someone in a next level position you who can give you very practical advice on the do's and don'ts meet with them weekly and always prepare meaningful questions I found this question list by Dicky Bush to be amazing second a diagonal Peer who is in the same organization or in a cross-functional team they're usually the same level as your manager and the best ways to engage them are to send them an email whenever a project you're working on benefits their business schedule regular 101s and ask for their advice on a challenge you're facing and my personal favorite give credit and let them know whenever their team helps you in some way third person as obvious as it sounds your manager's manager you should meet with them twice a year and if you don't know what to cover in those 101s here are three ideas a status update on a project you're working on this is a safe business topic a challenge or win from the front line they're usually too senior to hear these stories feedback on a current process that can be improved but only do this if you have already taken steps to help out these three people will help you do your core job better deepen your network within the organization and during performance review season they will be your strongest Advocates something we'll

Don’t Beat Around the Bush

talk about in a minute tip number three is a quick one don't beat around the bush it's tough to ask for a promotion I would know but there's a huge benefit of having transparent discussions and that is to identify gaps in your skill sets as early as possible here's how I kick off the conversation with my manager hey prisca having spent almost a year in my current role at overachieving Revenue targets by 10 through initiatives a b and c I love to hear your thoughts on how I can best position myself for a promotion in two cycles since you have a much broader perspective it would be great if you could share the skills you see in strong performers at the next level that I could work towards Pro tip once you've aligned on areas you can improve on ask your manager to create opportunities for you to work on those areas lack leadership assign you as a mentor lack presence invite you to

Play the Game, and Keep Score

present to senior leaders tip number four for getting promote did play the game and keep score the game is easy it's simply knowing that success metrics employees are measured on there's usually a business okr what you do and Company attributes how you do it business okrs are easy to quantify Revenue cost savings number of bugs fixed company attributes differ by company for example I used to be measured on execution problem solving and thought leadership and Apple employees are measured on teamwork Innovation and results keeping score is the hard part because most of us forget to regularly review our accomplishments when we're not asked to do it right but here's a trick for the quantifiable metrics come up with an automated system that you just need to set up once but can give you updated numbers with minimal work I talk about this in my productivity for work video so check that out Pro tip always find a way to Benchmark your numbers to a team or Regional average for example it looks bad if your project only drove 15 in product adoption but if the overall adoption is eight percent your almost doubling their output for company attributes create a tab for each quarter in your 101 document with your manager remember you should always organize information by where you will use it because this way you will never forget to update that tab within the tab list out the company attributes and the corresponding projects where you showcase each attribute include the objective of the projects talking points to bring up with your manager and most importantly colleagues AKA your

Be the Master of One

Advocates who can vouch for you tip number five probably the most controversial be the master of one in my experience it's hard to be above average in all aspects of the job but it's relatively easy to stand out in one specific area the trick is to find the most boring unsexy part of the job and own it when I was in the sales team I spent a lot of time creating onboarding videos for new hires teaching them how to use our backend systems nothing uh the telephone I have no idea what you're talking about yeah how those campaigns coming along when I joined the marketing team I got really good at drafting contracts and purchase orders and for those of you who don't know so that's probably the most mind-numbingly boring work you can do as a marketer but because no one else wanted to do it was easy for me to be known by the senior leaders as that helpful dude who is strong in execution and hey that's a company attribute so you see how all this ties together if you found this video helpful you might like my playlist on how to succeed in the workplace likes and Subs are appreciated see you on the next video in the meantime have a great one
