You don't need to work on your vocabulary if you want to be a good speaker. One of the most common questions I get asked is, "Yaser, I am not a good speaker. How do I increase my vocabulary? How can I learn more complicated and complex words so people think I'm intelligent? " This is the wrong way of going about it because you're thinking if you have more complicated things to say, if you speak like Shakespeare, all of a sudden you will become a good communicator. What will happen is you will start speaking in a way where internally you want other people's validation. You want them to compliment you. Wow, what a great word you just used. Wow, you must be really smart because you use this metaphor, that metaphor, this word, that word. But what actually happens is when you try speaking with fancier vocabulary, most people don't understand what you're saying. It takes too much brain power to understand each word that you're saying that they don't understand, connecting it to other sentences that you have with more complicated words. And then eventually they just tune out because they don't understand. And people won't tell you they don't understand. Because when they say, "Oh, I don't understand what you're saying. " It makes them feel stupid. dumb. So vocabulary is not your issue. And most people misdiagnose this. The real issue is you simply don't know how to structure your thoughts when you speak. And you don't know how to speak in simple enough language where people understand. So, I'll give you an example. When I was in Malaysia, it was my first day there. I couldn't speak the language. So, I was asking the person at the restaurant, "Hey, how much for this can of Coke? " And she couldn't really understand what I was saying. So, she had a can of Coke, a bottle of Coke, different versions of fizzy drinks that they had. And all she did was she pointed at one and then she gave me a number. And then she pointed at the other one and then she gave me a number and that told me this thing costs one, this thing costs two. And then I paid her the amount and I purchased a drink. She didn't say a single word but the communication was so clear. So if you can think about language like this, language is not or communication is not just vocabulary. It is how can I get the message to the other person in the shortest possible way in the easiest simplest possible way to understand. If you can do this where you can speak in a way where people understand you even if you have imperfect grammar even if you don't have the best vocabulary body language you are going to be a good communicator. And just ask yourself, do you think there are people on the planet who don't have perfect English, who struggle with vocabulary, and yet they are still confident speakers? I can tell you 10 people right off the top of my head. So yes, you can become a better speaker. Vocabulary is not your problem. Your problem is learning to speak with clarity and structure. I've got some videos on my channel. Go check them out. Hopefully this helped.
