I know I need to forgive a person, but I don't feel like they deserve it. What do you tell me in this situation? — The word of God says that we were made in the likeness of God. And that means that we carry certain capacities. Forgiveness is one of those capacities that we carry. God gives us unmmerited favor. And he extends mercy and covers us for with grace for things that we do that are horrible to God. We lie to God. We blasphem his name unintentionally. Sometimes we lie. We try to hide things. We hurt God unintentionally and he still forgives us. We have to understand that there is an authority that God allows us to exercise. Forgiveness, prayer, spiritual disciplines. I exercise my authority in praying for a person who offended me because maybe they went through something and maybe they experienced something. Maybe they made a bad decision. But I have to humanize them because I'm still your brother or sister in Christ outside of this label. and I still need to be able to cover you. So when I remember as a believer as a child to a pastor when I remember that I am made in the likeness of God, I remember that God has blessed me with the ability to forgive someone else. I remember that is a power that I have that is not for them. It's for me first. However, I may be releasing them from something as well by simply forgiving them. And that is so much more important because regardless of what people like or not, the Bible Jesus commands us to love one another. And love is an action. It may not look like everybody else wants it to look. It may not look like how I want it to look. But forgiving a person is an action of love as well. And that is a capacity that we all have. The problem is we allow the enemy to come in and divide us so much and so many chords of division in our life that we forget that this person is a human too. How many people really do we wish would have received our apologies? How many people do we really wish would have forgiven us for even the smallest things we didn't try to do? I done told somebody off at the microphone and prayed that person forgive me one day. I done did a whole bunch of silly stuff in my life and prayed for people's forgiveness. I may never receive it from them, but it'll free me and something just knowing that I prayed for them. So, it is the same here. We have a responsibility. This is why God holds us accountable because God has placed moral reasoning as a capacity inside of us. We know right from wrong. We know the things that we should do to release us and other people. So once we start practicing actually being in the likeness of God, understanding why Jesus came to redeem us, to restore us back to the likeness of God to begin with, we'll be willing to release those things.
