How can the brand new MacBook Neo cost less than Apple's new headphones? Apple just revealed the new AirPods Max 2. These are over the ear headphones, which cost about $550. But Apple also is selling the MacBook Neo for just $500 when you use the education discount. So we are in new territory, my friends. How can a MacBook be that cheap? Or how can headphones cost so much? This is one more thing your weekly show about all things Apple. So let's sort it out by first explaining what's new and Apple's high end headphones. The AirPods Max 2. On the outside, well, nothing is new. This looks like the same headphone that they sold before even comes in. The same colors that were available before and is at the same price. 549 But Apple gave it the H2 chip, and with it, Apple says that the headset has more effective active noise canceling. It makes it one and a half times more effective than the last model. Apple also says these headphones have a new high dynamic range amplifier for cleaner audio. So if you're using spatial audio effects, you might notice more accurate bass and more natural sounding mids and highs. Now the H2 chip itself is not new. It's also in the smaller white AirPods like the Pro 2, the three and the AirPods four, which all it means is that the Big Mac size headphone gets the same tricks we've seen in the little buds. it's worth noting the H2 chip is also in Apple's Beats lineup with the sporty Powerbeats Pro 2. This week, beats released a new model. It did a collab with Nike to make a special edition model that's speckled in neon yellow funky. But back to the Max 2. It has adaptive audio to adjust your level of noise cancellation. It has conversation awareness, so when you start speaking, it lowers the volume plane on the headset. It has voice isolation to minimize loud background sounds when you're on a call and it has live translation. Now that means if you hold the listening mode button, it can translate the language that the person in front of you is speaking and turn it into your preferred language. That is, if you don't find it weird to have a conversation with someone in a different language while you're wearing over the ear headphones. But hey, anything's possible now. It also supports all kinds of Siri interactions, and as a perk for professional creators, if record studio quality audio. Now, the AirPods Max 2 will be available to preorder on March 25th, and it's going to ship sometime in early April. Apple first launched the AirPods Max back in 2020, and people naturally felt a little weird about the price tag back then. $549 is a lot because, well, it was $300 more than the AirPods Pro Buds and Apple going in with this new high end headphone. It also was more expensive than the current leading noise canceling headphones from Bose and Sony, both of which at the time you could find for about 300 bucks on sale. But Apple showed us that people wanted the AirPods Max and prices with Apple's competitors in this whole category have gone up since. now there was a little tweak done to these headphones back in 2024. Apple did change the port on it to be a usb-C port, and it sold it in some new colors, but this model going on pre-sale right now. This is the first true technical upgrade in five years, so why is Apple not making a bigger deal of this update, or at least giving us a new color? Perhaps Apple has its priorities focused on other models of AirPod. You see. Here's one more rumor. There's been a few reports that Apple's AirPods Pro may get an upgrade this year to include infrared camera sensors. Now, this is not a camera for spying on people or taking photos. This could be a sensor that can detect changes in your environment with the help of Apple intelligence, Perhaps it would even sense how you are moving your hand so you can control the buds with hand gestures. There has been speculation that it could raise the price of the AirPods. The AirPods Pro three in my hand here are around $250, and they're even cheaper on sale when you buy it outside of Apple and the AirPods four, they are on the lower end. You can find those for about $100 now. They also have active noise canceling, and it tends to be an easier price point for customers to jump into this new tech. And that lower bar of entry is what the MacBook Neo is all about. Yes. This is where we connect the dots. Apple design. The Neo special is the Apple wanted to find ways to lower the MacBook cost to make this a budget laptop that still didn't feel too cheap, and that is involved some cost cutting decisions, like there were fewer ports on this. The keyboard doesn't light up, and also it has a processor that is an iPhone processor. It's already developed on a massive scale for iPhone production.

The Neo is almost half the cost as the next step up in MacBook, and MacBooks can go pretty high in cost. So just like the AirPods lineup, there will always be different cost tiers for Apple products to get you in the door and level you up over time, depending on the stage of life you're in. Certainly. Though, we cannot always predict what Apple will do. There has been a ton of surprises already this year, many of which are tied to celebrating Apple's 50th year. One week ago, I was at a very cool surprise party where Apple brought in Alicia Keys to perform in Grand Central Terminal. She took over the Apple Store space, and people just passing by on their commute got to see it. The whole moment was really moving for me. Apple plans to have several of these events around the world to highlight human creativity, because Apple's products are all about making cool things. Now Alicia Keys has a history with Apple. She was one of the first artists to release her catalog and spatial Audio on Apple Music, and she headlined an Apple Music live performance, and she had one of the first immersive experiences for the Apple Vision Pro with a video that showed her rehearsing. Now, while waiting for the show to start, I met some awesome Apple creators and that experience was very special. But as we gathered around and saw Tim Cook and other executives show up, we didn't know what to really expect until it began. But not every surprise event may be just like this one. Another Apple Store shut down this week for a performance in China In South Korea, a K-pop band became the center of a Today at Apple Store session. Now, what I can tell you is that the whole Alicia Keys concert was filmed using iPhones. So maybe Apple will publish the performance. So I hope you can see some of it too, if it airs and if it does air, will you be someone who listens to it on a AirPods Max 2? Or maybe you'll wait for whatever new AirPods Apple has coming next? If you end up catching any of these special 50th anniversary events around the world when they happen in person, let me know. I'd love to share your photos and videos on this show. Find me on social media and let's see what else Apple will surprise us with. Until I catch you next week for the next One More Thing.
