Many people are talking about how to limit toxic exposure, but almost nobody talks about the body's ability to eliminate it altogether. As a physician, I'll be honest, the topic of toxic exposure isn't something we spend much time on in traditional medical training. But recently, I decided to get my own toxic exposure levels tested. And that's when this topic became much more real to me. I used a company called Million Marker, which measures indocrine disrupting chemicals like BPA, phalates, and parabens through a urine analysis. My results came back squeaky clean. And I have to say I was shocked because up until this point, I have consistently used plastic water bottles and food packaging. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't microwave my food. And folks, I definitely try to smell good. I do wear cologne. So, what stood out wasn't just that exposure is common. It's that what matters just as much is how your body processes and eliminates these chemicals. Your body already has built-in detoxification systems. Your liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal system, and even your sweat glands are constantly working to clear environmental chemicals. But how well those systems function is heavily influenced by metabolic health. Regular exercise improves circulation and supports liver metabolism, helping your body process and eliminate toxic exposures more efficiently. Turns out sweating also plays a major role. In fact, research has shown that certain compounds, including heavy metals, can be excreted through sweat, which is one reason sauna use is being studied in longevity and metabolic health. Nutrition matters, too. Adequate protein intake supports liver detox pathways, while dietary fiber can help bind and eliminate certain compounds through the gut. Periods of fasting, which you know I'm a huge advocate for, may also help activate cellular repair and cleanup pathways. So, the goal isn't extreme detox protocols or cleanses. It's building a system that works through movement, metabolic health, and optimization, and nutrition. Because while we can't really eliminate every exposure, we can absolutely improve how our bodies handle them. Folks, the human body is impressive when it comes to its natural organic intact mechanisms to live healthy if we just give it a chance. Now, remember to check out my top two resources on this subject again, Unplastic Your Life on Instagram and the Oceanic Preservation Society's plastic detox site.
