### Segment 1 (00:00 - 04:00) []

From medicines to mattresses, spokes to spaceships, manufacturing in America is full of opportunity. Today, it's possible to produce just one part, rather than building the entire machine. But it wasn't always this way. After the second industrial revolution, the country was just beginning to understand why things worked and why they didn't. This new understanding helped advance technology. Research and development were leading to groundbreaking discoveries. Manufacturing was evolving. And over the next 150 years, we would go on to invent cars, phones, electricity, TV, and the Internet. We redefined how we live, work and communicate. We learned to fly and even travel to outer space. But none of that happened by accident. It occurred because of innovators, business owners like you. You see, back then, only large companies could afford to manufacture certain products. If you were building a car, everything from the engine to the seats was made in-house. Workers had to create every part before fitting them all together. It was a resource-heavy process that kept the cost of motoring and manufacturing beyond the reach of the average person. But the landscape has shifted. Today, you don't have to create the product from start to finish. You can make just one part of it. You can also start small with a few pieces or small batches. With e-commerce, you no longer need a giant factory or sprawling business to get started. You just need one idea. You can take one step toward your business goals by starting with one product. And if history has shown us anything, it’s that small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. Yes, we fought for freedom, but we also built the American dream. You may not realize it, but some of the most well-known companies in America were founded by veterans. A World War II veteran who served in the U. S. Army Intelligence Corps founded a major retail chain now in nearly every town in America. A World War II Hellcat pilot founded a car rental company after serving in the U. S. Navy. He started with a small fleet of seven cars. It's now a global company. In manufacturing, a tool and equipment company was first started to support the war effort. Later, the son of the founder who was also serving in the U. S. Army Reserves took the reins and began applying leadership lessons learned from his time in the service to grow the family business even further. And the innovation continues. More recently, a decorated U. S. Air Force veteran turned a family recipe into a nationally recognized product by launching a versatile, all-American, woman-owned sauce brand. What connects these founders? Leadership. Grit. Problem-solving. And among other things, each one of these individuals was willing to try something new. They were willing to start small and had the fortitude to see it grow. Veterans know how to lead, how to work as a team, and how to stay calm under pressure. Qualities that make us a perfect fit to be American manufacturers. This country needed your service, and we're forever grateful for it. Now, we're inviting you to serve in a new way: Tto lead a business, create a product, or manufacture something new. If you have a great idea, the Small Business Administration's Veteran Business Outreach Center can help you turn it into a thriving company. From training and mentoring to finding funding, we have resources designed specifically for veterans and military spouses who are ready to build their future in manufacturing. President Lincoln once said: “The best way to predict your future is to create it. ” Your next mission begins here. Learn more at sba. gov/veterans.
