# Using Segments in Google Analytics

if you want to create or use a segment in Google analytics you can do so from the segments portion of the variables pane in explore in any explore tab you'll see this area called segments below it are a list of segments that you already have added into the property and you'll see that there are some that are just for this particular report and there are some such as direct traffic paid traffic mobile and tablet that have this little share icon which indicates that this is a save segment shared with other users of the property to create a new segment we can click this plus icon and this will first open up a list of all of the segments that you have available in the property or your segment Library you can click to add certain segments from the library if you would like to bring those into your exploration or if you would like to create a new segment you can come up to this upper right hand corner and click create a new segment here we can go ahead and create a custom segment from scratch or we can use a template such as purchasers here I've clicked into purchasers and this adds a template that's already been built to include users when they make a purchase if I like this segment the way it is I can go ahead and click apply to apply it to the report that I have now or if I click save to property this will apply it to the report I have now and save it to the segment Library so as you can see this is now applied here in this report so I'm now narrowed down to just purchasers and purchasers is now over here in this left hand panel and showing as a saved segment if I click the three dots on the right of this tile I can see to apply it edit it duplicate it create an audience from the segment or remove it I can also access the segment library from admin and then under data display it can choose segments here I'll see a list of all of the saved segments available in this property you can see ones that are out of the box as well as ones that have a name by created by that have been created in this property you'll have information such as quota information where it shows that currently one out of 50 saved segments uh has been created and I can also create a new save segment from here for example maybe I want to create a custom segment such as a session segment for sessions that include people coming from California so to do so I'll choose the dimension of region and that it contains California and hit apply I'll give the segment a name of California the summary looks good and I'll hit save this is now available in my segment library now again I can go ahead and choose different actions with the three dots on the right such as editing duplicating create an audience from the segment or delete it if I choose to delete it I'll get a note asking if I really want to delete it and can confirm to use any of the segments that I create here or from within the Explorer UI I can go to explore and apply those segments
