Yes, I might not yet know if I've been rejected from Oxford University or not, but at least spending the last 3 days as a judge on an admissions panel felt like the ego boost I needed. I also often underestimate young people because wow, I was getting emotional at how insane some of these applications were. I am on the jury of a fancy global competition called the Learning Planet Youth Design Challenge where over 3,000 young people submitted projects to solve an educational problem in their local community to win funding and mentorship. Guys, these students are so smart. I'm talking a Filipino boy realizing that children in his school from off-grid indigenous communities didn't have access to electricity at home. They had no light to study with. So, he created a youthled program to set up solar lamp kits in their homes. Or a girl in India who wanted to fight pollution in her city while promoting nature-based education. So, she created 15 pollinator gardens run by children from orphanages and welfare centers. or a human rights student in Ireland who designed a peer learning program to teach students democratic education. Oh, let's just say I have never had to toil over judging criteria for so long. I just wanted to give them all a 10 out of 10. When we're constantly bombarded with bad news online, you can forget how much good is happening out there. How many brilliant, hopeful things are happening that we don't even know about. And every single one of them just started with a person having an idea. This is your reminder that if you want to improve something in your community, you have no idea how many competitions and support networks are waiting to help you. I know so many incredible networks and professionals who are dying to mentor passionate young people. But first, you need to be bold enough to start turning your ideas into reality.
