Astronomers first noticed something strange going on with the galaxies about a hundred years ago. Distant galaxies were moving away from us. This provided the first key evidence that the universe is expanding. Initially, scientists thought that gravity would eventually slow down this expansion. But in 1998, they discovered that the universe expansion was actually accelerating. They attributed these observations to dark energy. Dark energy makes up 70% of the mass energy density of the universe. But we still know very little about it. The dark energy survey was devised to study this mysterious energy. From 2013 to 2019, the DEES collaboration recorded information from 669 million galaxies that are billions of light years from Earth. In our latest results, DES combined four different dark energy probes in a single experiment for the first time. The new analysis narrows down the possible models for how the universe behaves. This is really YD as a such a experiment. It was designed so that we can use the same data to probe dark energy. And because the approaches of the four methods are very different, we get a tighter and more trustworthy answer. I think it's particularly exciting since it adds to the next phase of cosmology in my view where discovery of new physics comes from when we start combining different ways of looking at the universe. We're already working on investigating alternative gravity and dark energy models with all the data de collected. We've also paved the way for the NSF DOE Veracy Rubin Observatory to do similar work thanks to several methods that dees developed.
