### Segment 1 (00:00 - 01:00) []

Have you ever wondered why owls rotate their heads so much? It's all part of an extreme tradeoff, and it has to do with their night vision. If you're active at night like an owl, you need a huge pupil and a huge lens. This lets in even small amounts of light, like the glow of moonlight. But if they were to also have a huge retina to see as wide of a visual field as possible, they'd end up with a huge eye. But eyes are expensive and heavy, especially for birds that have to fly. So, what's an owl to do? They sacrifice peripheral vision by removing the outer parts of the retina. The result, a tubular eye. They've maximized sensitivity and have incredible vision, but only in the forward direction. The price, their eyes can't move in their sockets. So, when an owl wants to look around, it has to move its entire head. And it can turn it an incredible 270°. You can watch a 30inute documentary on the topic of the weirdest animal eyes on the Real Science channel
