Всеми своими действиями Брэнсон хочет показать, что времена великих открытий еще не прошли, – да и как они могут пройти, если то, что стоит искать, сокрыто прежде всего в каждом из нас? new company in a new industry entering new industries that you have never done before even after you already reach success you continue taking big risk because a new industry is a big risk for the reputation of the group for you what is the motive behind this action you know to constantly never-ending take this new risk on yourself I think it's partly personal I mean I never went to university I left school at 15 and I've seen life as almost like one long university education that I never had so I'm learning all the time and you know if I'm learning about the train business I'm learning about you know the airline the record business than learning about the space business and so on and it's just been a fascinating you know so fascinating learning process that that also has created you know a lot already interesting companies and jobs and you know we've got nearly a hundred thousand people who work the virgin now the and the interesting thing is people when we first were in the record business and we went into the airline business people said you know how could somebody from you know who's entertaining people possibly you know go into the airline business but the point is you know people who fly on planes they want to be entertained they want to have a good time an enjoyable eight hours and the airlines in those days did not offer you know a great experience I mean my um I mean I have told this story before but I will tell it again how I got into the airline business I was in Puerto Rico one day and I was trying to get to the Virgin Islands and I had a lovely lady waiting for me in the Virgin Islands and I'd been away for three weeks and I was 28 years old and American Airlines decided they didn't have enough passengers on the flight so they decided to tell us all to come back the next morning and I was damned if I was going to come back the next morning I wanted to see my lady that night so I went to the back of the airport and I hired a plane and I borrowed a blackboard and I wrote on the blackboard Virgin Airlines one way to the British Virgin Islands $39 and I went to all the passengers who got bumped and I filled my first plane and when we arrived in the British Virgin Islands somebody said to me you know sharpen up the service a bit and you could be in the airline business and literally the next day I rang up Boeing and said do you have any secondhand 747s for sale and you know they asked me what my name of my company was and I said it you know we have the Rolling Stones we have the Sex Pistols on our record label and the company is called virgin and there was a long pause and they said well you know whatever happens you should change the name of the company because nobody would ever go on an airline called virgin because they'd all assumed that the company airline wouldn't go the whole way and but anyway they let us have a 747 amazing but what is the energy behind this courage because what I hear is you know courage just taking big actions and what is the source for your courage for your drive what do you think I mean I suspect there's quite a lot of people in the audience who are thinking about whether they should start a business and I think you know if the first thing you have to do is to have an idea that's gonna make people's lives better that's all the businesses if you have an idea that's gonna make people's lives better and it's not being done well by other people then you have a business and and you just gotta say screw it you know let's do it let's get out there and give it a go and you know the worst thing that can happen is that it doesn't succeed and I think that

you know the in Russia there's quite a lot of young people who are afraid of failure and and I think that goes back a number of generations in Russia whereas in America or the UK people I think have got over that fear of failure and if you try something and you fail you pick yourself up and you try again until you succeed and I think it's important that Russian society appreciates people who try things and don't necessarily succeed the first time and from what I've heard I think that attitude is you know is moving and changing in that positive direction you can learn so much from trying something and you learn I suspect more from failing obviously it's best not but then the next time or the next time you should succeed can you go into more detail on this on if you speak about failure and I remember virgin coke and there's some other big initiatives that fail what did you learn from it and what do you do today as a result of these learnings when you start something well we thought we could take on coca-cola and knock them into number-two position in the world is and but the virgin could become the number one brand in the world and for about a year we were succeeding we were at where we were outselling Coke and Pepsi but I made the mistake of arriving in Times Square in a in a tank and crushing a lot of Kohler and PepsiCo signs and I think I woke up adjourned and they got a Plane full of SWAT teams and cash and they arrived in the UK and the virgin Cola just disappeared from all the shelves so I think you know what we learned from that was if you are gonna take on a company much bigger than yourself make sure your products much better so you know when Virgin Atlantic took on British Airways we were a lot better and when they tried to crush us we took them to court we won a big court case and they backed off but with a can of cola you cut you can't be you know fundamentally different from the other people's so now we only go into businesses where we're you know much better than all our competitors okay so to finish this failure if you would imagine the audience would be you when you were 16 before you all before it all started what would you tell yourself like you tell it to the audience like you're speaking to yourself when you're 16 well yeah Oh like all I would be able to all I would say to myself is don't do anything particularly different I think if I was 16 I have an idea and you fail if you don't do something about it you know the important thing is just to say screw it let's do it let's you know get on and give it a go and you know obviously you know this as well as I do they be important the important thing is just to try it and you may even find by trying it that other ideas spin off it I mean we were we started with a magazine for young people we soon realized that young people were actually more interested in music than they were in magazines and we started advertising selling music cheaply in the magazine and so once you actually get going if you keep your eyes open you know you're lots of other opportunities will come but if you don't get going you know that's fine too I mean you just make that make the best of working for somebody else and you can have a great life doing that but it may be it may not be quite as that exciting and rewarding is trying to set up your own business so you would not tell yourself don't do virgin Cola now I think I would I mean like you know even by taking on coca-cola it helped the brand I mean although we failed you know people don't mind people who take on a big chant you know that I

mean if David hadn't succeeded in dropping Goliath David still would have gone down in history so you know you shouldn't be embarrassed about trying things and not succeeding ok let's speak about philanthropy a little bit because at what age did you have the idea that you are ready to give back I know you created Virgin Unite and you support a lot of initiatives which are nonprofit what is the logic behind what is your focus at the moment how do you look at philanthropy I think there's the video about Virgin Unite maybe we can you play the video please you don't Virgin Unite was started cuz we wanted to bring all of the entrepreneurial energy across the whole virgin group to look at how could we radically transform the way we do business worried in a world where we're facing a number of problems right no economic or otherwise that's really the time for entrepreneurs to scientist to make opportunities also challenges to be in that environment of being with the people who share the same idea that you they make you feel proud of what you did the elders can become a fiercely independent and robust force for good we have been able through their good offices to get 18 million dollars what we're all about is helping create good viable business opportunities out of carbon emission mitigation what about how were you thank you yes I think in the past I think a lot of businesses felt that governments and the social sector should sort out the problems of the world I think in the last ten years more and more businesses are realizing that we should help governments and the social sector sort out the problems of this world and that if every single entrepreneur in the world can adopt at least one problem maybe two maybe three

problems that most of the problems in this world can be solved and so we've said we've set up organizations like the B team to try to unite businesses to try to get on top of some of the bigger problems of this world in Paris you know we were there as the B team and also as the elders trying to make sure that the Paris talks were successful in you know Britain in agreeing the climate change resolutions that took place a year ago the elders it's a wonderful organization which you could see Archbishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela we set them up to try to resolve conflicts the elders have been here you know they spent a weekend with President Putin and you know they've been to Iran and they've been to North Korea they've been to my anima and Kofi Annan heads up the elders and they basically quietly behind the scenes are trying to you know trying to bridge gaps in the world and obviously one of those saddest things I think that's happened is that you know I was there when the Berlin Wall came down it was a wonderful day you know we embraced each other the Russian people are as close to being you know close to Europe and you know as anybody I mean they're human bit we're all human beings we get on great when we meet each other and we've got to try to make sure that this sort of Cold War mentality that seems to be developing again is stopped and that we can we we can you know that the Russia in Europe but can as it become one and and we can get rid of the stupid the stupidness that's been going on in the last few years and that's where somebody don't like the elders I think and play can play a role and I mean this is amazing thank you very much Richard for inspiring us to take action but what is your thinking behind to focus just on one thing for example just the elders or to focus on multiple activities because the world is a big place with a lot of problems I'm sure you think a lot how should you distribute your focus what is your thinking behind I'm a I'm an entrepreneur and therefore it's impossible for me just to focus on one thing I mean entrepreneurs see problems and we want to address problems and if we don't have time to do every problem in the world we will delegate we'll find good people to manage our businesses or manage our foundations but we won't just take on one or two one or two projects in our lifetime so you know like if you if you take Russia right now and you know you have a major drug problem in Russia and we have something called the global drug Commission which has 15 ex-presidents on it we've studied the war on drugs has been an abject failure and yet countries like Russia countries like America continue to wage this war and Wars don't work they didn't work in Vietnam Iran they did Wars never work and was on Wars against drugs do not work and what we what you need to do is to somebody needs to go on television and say we will never send anybody who has a drug problem to prison ever again drugs will be treated as a health problem not a criminal problem if somebody has an alcohol problem we will help them if somebody has a drug and in that is the way to overcome the problem and to get people to reduce their addiction and countries that have taken that approach you know overcome this problem and so you know so as a businessman when I see
25:00

Segment 6 (25:00 - 30:00)

countries like Portugal or Germany getting on top of their drug problems in that way you know I want to come to Russia America and try to ask them suggest to them that they should change approach and that's why we're involved in something like the global drug Commission and I think businesspeople can see these things sometimes more clearly than you know then one of the problems that a politician has is quite often they're appointed if they're successful after two years in one ministry they've moved on to another ministry if they're successful in that after two years they moved on to another ministry if they're not successful after two years they're out altogether so they never have the time to really study and understand the issues of the world whereas I think the entrepreneurs in this room you know they're you I've been 50 years as an entrepreneur you've got a lifetime to look at all these problems and and you can actually perhaps understand them and help the politicians and help the social sector we are very much focused on entrepreneurship development so today is a big day for me that's why I support synergy global i suffer'd i support I teach at the synergy MBA program because we believe like you sign the Bill Gates Giving Pledge and we are signing today the Entrepreneurship pledge because we want to dedicate our lives that more entrepreneurs become like you built a billion-dollar business and start giving back start thinking bigger so I think this is a great story and inspiration so I would like to switch a little bit to you personally what role did your personal brand play in your life and in your business because you are I checked on Google your name is one of the most searched names in business how do you think about this how does it help trust to create something new when I started I you know we were taking on somebody like British Airways who had 300 airplanes Pan Am and TWA with 300 airplanes we had one plane and if you're very very small really big competitors and you don't have much money you have to use yourself to get out and promote your brand and you know I mean I even went to you know to took fairly extraordinary risks in trying to break the you know the transatlantic record for the fastest boats and trying to fly around the world in balloons and and you know so in a sense I put my life on my on the line to try to get the brand well known they became great adventures in themselves but they certainly put help put the Virgin brand on the map they gave it a much more adventurous image than say British Airways who we were competing against and it enabled you know Virgin Atlantic to grow into what it is today I think we have a very short video of some of the ballooning my son just made a feature film called don't look down which is on Netflix but we might just quickly show a little tiny little clip I think sure I saw my life flash before my eyes it was just me standing on top of the capsule looking down at the water I wrote a note to the kids telling them how much I loved her and then I prepared to jump richard branson's made a career out of breaking tradition and has a flair for self-promotion version we're getting big and bigger I knew that I just had to use myself to get Burton on the front pages rather than a little anecdote on the back pages I saw this incredible challenge to be the first people to cross the Atlantic in a hot-air balloon the prize was fabulous Richard's words but he'll let's do it he has great faith in other people misplaced in my view six people have betrayed five the perish share his fear my mother had enormous expectations I had to do some pretty extraordinary things my being dyslexic is school I would get nothing right I left school 15

I completely failed I suppose I had a lot to prove we headed up to 30,000 feet it's beautifully serene as long as nothing interrupts that serenity there's nothing more magical somebody taking the blue and right we were completely out of control and then we're gonna try it again soon thank you I think I've retired from doing ballooning of obviously on our next big adventure is his space and in I saw the moon landing when I was 18 years old on a little black-and-white television set and I was completely captivated by space and I assumed that one day either you know America Russia China would sort of really sort of open up the chance for people to go to space and I waited and waited and it didn't really happen properly so about 12 years ago we embarked on tried trying to build our own space line Virgin Galactic and I hope yeah a couple of months from now two maybe three months Virgin Galactic will finally be in space and the whole new space era will open up where a lot of people in this room hopefully one day will be able to go to space and afford to go to space how much does it cost now it's not cheap but it to go up on a Russian spaceships about thirty five million to go up on purge virgin it's two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and in time it's little bit the price well in the short term it'll go up a bit because it's cost us a lot to get there but in the long term it'll come down but you know but you know there are three of us who already building in you know independent space lines so there's this Jeff besos myself and Elon and we've all taken slightly different approaches but I think you know over the next couple of years it's going to be a very exciting time for space travel and we're also you know building a big array of satellites around the earth with a company called one Webb to connect the four billion people are not connected at the moment I know we've done one or two videos but let's just have a quick space video I think before we start the video how many tickets did you already sell nearly 900 tickets on 1,000 people already have a ticket to go and waiting for the breakthrough okay let's look at the video Virgin Galactic and it is one of the great adventures of all time humans have managed to learn so much about the universe in such a relatively small timeframe compared with the life of the universe that was always very incredible to me you know I think that I and most of the people in this team choose to be in space because you're part of something that is changing the way humans look at the world the way we relate to each other the way we live we have an opportunity here to do aerospace better and we're doing it on a landmark program that's gonna change the world by bringing hundreds and eventually thousands of people into space they'll get a different perspective on life and on our future and that over time that will have a profound impact on how humanity faces its toughest problems together we can make space accessible in a way it has only been dreamt of before now and by doing that we can truly bring positive change to life on Earth

have you ever thought about going into space wicked I'd love to go into space I think it could be nothing nicer so if you're building a spacecraft I'd love to come with you on it so and how many people in the audience would like to go to space one day a lot of people I can't believe you got people right up in the give us a wave from right up the top there sabe VF near address it's a big hole a lot of people that's what the biggest gathering of entrepreneurs in history well I've done a few talks in my lifetime and never it's never spoken to so many people I hope you you've all had a good couple of days and they send me a lot of questions for you and the second most asked question for some reason in Russia everybody likes life Hawks you know some simple tools principles ideas that help you the most what could you say are some life hacks that you actually use in your life that help you the most something I never understand is how people can have a meeting and they don't take notes I think that one of the things that has helped me the most in my life is capturing the ideas of other people if I have a meeting with it with somebody I will always have a notebook and I will always write down thoughts and ideas from that meeting and you know if I see if I'm traveling on a Virgin Atlantic plane you know I will get out there I will talk to this the passengers I'll talk to the staff I will listen and I will write suggestions and ideas down and I think that's how you make an exceptional company over an average company and it's all those little things that make for a make for an exceptional experience for your customers and for your staff the last time I was on a Virgin Atlantic plane all the staff had been given new high-heeled shoes and I asked the girl they look great I asked the girls you know where they enjoying their new shoes and they said yes and I said you know are they comfortable and they said no they said they create a blister on the heel and if you've got your staff walking around with blisters on their heels you're not going to have a smiling happy stuff and so obviously you know I wrote it down and the next day I looked at my list of things and made sure that the shoes were changed immediately and I've seen other managing directors of companies that they'll walk around then they'll sound like they're interested in their staff they customers they'll get lots of ideas thrown at them they'll bail Nord sagely and I know the next day they're not going to do anything about it those same problems will carry on day after day and yeah so you know there's no question that the note-taking the ability to listen I mean I think a lot of leaders love to listen to themselves but they're not good listeners to other people you know what I thinks I don't need to listen to myself I do other people and I think a really exceptional leader is somebody that it doesn't hear their own voice very much at all but it but is listening

to every everybody's voice and you know the sometimes you know the people who you know just working in a shop if you go and talk to them they will tell you whether your products are good or bad they will tell you know what's wrong what needs to be sorted you don't need to get in experts from outside to tell you why your business is losing money just get out there on to the shop floor and talk to your people you know talk to your cabin crew talk to you know the people running your trains and you know listen write it down in the evenings I party with our staff if I go if I you know I mean tonight sadly I'm having to leave it you know for an event you can stay we organized the party for you but you know and and again in a party with your staff you're gonna learn a lot but again because you're parting because you're drinking you're not gonna remember the next day unless you write things down so you know even at the bar nighttime have a little notebook in your pocket scribble the things down that people tell you and then get it to carry on and enjoy the evening have a great party be get up on the dance bar you know lead the way in making sure everybody has a good time if the person who's running the company is on the bar dancing then everybody else feel they can let their hair down they can be on the bar dancing - everyone will go home they'll have a blast if the person who's running the company is standing in the corner with in a suit and a tie sipping sherry talking to the other directors everyone's going to have a really dull boring evening I think you got to lead me and lead the way in the fun times as well as you know as well as in the work times thank you and as a quick follow on how do you manage your calendar what is your style well I think again doesn't matter really what age you are but matters may be slightly more when you get to my age everybody in this room needs to find time for themselves so you know if you're fit if you're healthy the endorphins are running and you can achieve anything if you're just working working and you don't look after yourself you're not you're gonna work less hours every day and ultimately you'll get he'll you won't have time for your partner your children and you know it's just like a battery of a car running down so and you know so I get up early maybe five o'clock in the morning I play a hard game of singles tennis because I love tennis I think maybe go kite surfing because I love kite surfing and then have breakfast and then you know then I'll get to work during the day on lots of different things I enjoy because I enjoy a pretty well everything I do and then early evening I'll go back to another singles game of tennis and other kitesurf maybe surfing but I do things which I enjoy to keep fit and then I often you know I mean like tomorrow morning I'm gonna be on the tennis court in the Caribbean with Demetri the hungry Aryan you just won the tennis finals last week and it's and it's interesting I mean I'm 67 years old I can play a game of tennis as good as you know as most pros I know and it's thoroughly enjoyable and I think it's not if you can keep yourself fit and healthy you can achieve enormous amount you know I mean you know you can run ninety thousand people company you can run sort of twenty or thirty different charities yeah and you know you can look after yourself and your family and find time for friends I mean I think you know one of the one other thing one thing I learned when I was in my early twenties was the absolute importance of delegation and I think there would be a lot of people in this room who will be starting their businesses and they'll feel they have to do everything themselves and they'll feel that there's nobody else who can do things as well as themselves and they are refused to

delegate and this ket will carry on with most people you know for year after year and that in itself will make them exhausted and tired and they won't their business won't be run as well so you know what I always say to people a bit for building businesses the most important thing you can do is take a week off it's concentrate on finding somebody who's as good or better than you hopefully from within the company you know because that often you'll find that somebody actually within the company you can promote and they'll do really well put them in charge and let them deal with all the things you've been dealing with so you can then maybe go and work from home for a while spend some more time with your your partner or your family start thinking about the bigger picture items the things that really will make a difference you'll have a time to troubleshoot when things go wrong push the company forward into exciting new areas but if you if you're they're running it day to day all the time people always want to see the top person in the building and if so if you're still you're the top person all the drawers you know all the things that wait waste your time will come your way because you'll want to be polite you'll say well I'm here I'd better see him because you know and it's not necessarily pushing your you're not ready achieving anything you're just being polite have somebody else to do that politeness and and you can then go and achieve miracles elsewhere we are almost running out of time but we have we want to take one question from the audience and I know you have the first ever virgin connect phone with you so we will give a gift who in this room has ever saved somebody's life please put your hand up those Pascal die liebe camuto's reason but in my despair Elsa was his chance that were pros Richard Branson OE okay voicemail as the diaper pros is T octo sponsor is Anoushka divisor so the last question will be from the audience from a person who saved somebody's life and will get the present the first ever virgin phone male deeds so whose life did you save what happened how about this pass a child chose to Chile's Kaka tabouleh vodka and a Caterham helium I'm will Eadie t-mobile SIM Liat perrineville is cruzi my Billy no sir no money no - Bora Roberta Guerette what on or upon katana is Chitra historicity mystery of Metro with - Rio but on you were catch Ollie he got him out from 5 meters deep well then we're just launching this week virgin connecting in Russia and you're gonna be able to get all the TV channels on your phone and anyway this is the very first phones thank you very much so he will ask the last question kappa bob ross bus lady Dunwich and spooky Whelan have you ever been to China - Chi Nia are you inviting me to change the South Caucasus have you been to Caucasus now I've been to yourself but not anyway oh come on Richard thank you so much for your time for your inspiration thank you for being a role model for us so this is a great audience they're all looking to start a business maybe you've been finished with inspiration if you would be in the audience today and you would be a 20 year old Russian what would you do it so it's always difficult to sort of come up with one one phrase that sums it up but my favorite phrases screw it just get on and do it and I wish you
