In the latest news of how everything awful is connected to everything else awful, we're now seeing that the climate crisis is making the plastic pollution crisis worse. Extreme weather events are breaking down plastics into smaller parts and spreading them far and wide. But we probably shouldn't be surprised that the climate crisis and the plastic pollution crisis are so connected. After all, they're both caused by fossil fuels. Climate change is caused by burning fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases, and plastics are literally made from fossil fuels. And in fact, producing plastics is a major source of greenhouse gases. If plastics were a country, it would be one of the world's top emitters, responsible for more emissions than flying. And the companies which are behind these crises are trying exactly the same tactics to stop us acting on both. filling negotiations with lobbyists and arguing that we can just either recycle our way out of the problem or capture the carbon pollution and store it. But in both cases, we know that the obvious solution is the best solution. We need to stop producing so much pollution, plastic, and stop burning fossil fuels. The fact that these crises are connected is actually a good thing. If we properly tackle fossil fuels, we're not only tackling the climate crisis, we're also tackling the plastic pollution crisis.
