Scientists just learned how to regrow bone by implanting engineered cartilage that transforms inside the body. Your body can repair small bone fractures, but if the gap is more than 2 cm long or more than 50% of the bone circumference is missing, the natural healing process fails. So researchers at London University set out to find a bonafide solution. Instead of transplanting living tissue, they built a cartilage scaffold designed to trigger the body's own repair system. During embryionic development, bone forms through a process called endocchondrial oification, where cartilage acts as a temporary template that gradually transforms into bone. To do this, the team engineered cartilage in the lab using stem cell lines. Then using detergents, DNA digestion, and osmotic treatments, they stripped out more than 99. 7% of the cellular DNA, leaving behind only the structural matrix. This removes the immune triggering components that would normally cause a body to reject a foreign implant. But crucially, the biological instructions remain. The collagen scaffold and internal growth factors like BPM2 all help tell incoming cells how to form bone. When implanted into rats with a 5mm femoral defect, a gap that normally never heals on its own, the scaffold recruited the animals own cells, guiding them to rebuild the missing bone step by step. By the 6 week point, most animals already showed bone bridging. And by 12 weeks, in 100% of the cases, the bone had fully regenerated with the repaired femur recovering about 67% of the strength of normal bone. This innovation could help more than two million people worldwide who undergo bone graft surgery each year. A cellfree scaffold like this could be manufactured in advance and stored until needed, opening access to millions of patients, making a solution with real legs. — That leg's going to have to come off.
