Chinese battery giant CL just unveiled this, a lithiumion electric vehicle battery that fully charges in just 12 minutes. For decades, the electric vehicle industry has been trying to match the rapid refueling of gasoline. But currently, the electrochemical process required for quick charging creates heat, expansion, and mechanical stress that produces micro cracks and needle-like formations called dendrites that could preemptively drain the battery's lifespan or initiate catastrophic battery failure. To deliver these 12-minute charging times, engineers at CL had to introduce three innovations to help overcome these problems. The first is a novel cathode coating that acts like a selective filter, allowing only lithium ions to pass through while blocking damaging reactions. They also added a self-healing additive that can automatically repair microracts in the solid electrolyte layer, helping to make sure ions can move evenly across the interface. And finally, they developed a temperature responsive separator that slows down ion transport in hot spots within the battery, which protects the delicate chemistry and hopefully prevents thermal runaway. This means that under standard conditions, CL's 5C battery retains 80% capacity after 3,000 charging cycles.
