is pretty much inevitable. But here it is anyway. The new Leica Q3 monochrome. — Ah, wonky lens hood alert. Let's see it properly dewonked. Ah, yes. That's much better. — It's essentially the same as the other Q3s. Well, that's why it's called a Q3. So, same megapixel, same autofocusing. It's just monochrome. It's going to be very short video. — Your Leica looks flashy. — So, anyway, what is the point of this camera? Well, the reason is really quite black and white. As always, finding out Leica is all about having artistic options. I mean, you've got the Leica MV1 recently released, which is an M without rangefinder. You know, it demonstrates Leica's willing to open their arms to more types of photographers, even if some photographers are not so open armed. — Yeah. Second thing that annoyed me today, what — it's all about having options, different tools for different needs. So you've got the like M with EVF. You got the standard black Leica M. Then the shiny standard like M, Leica M with no screen, Leica M monochrome, Leica M with film liner that isn't a film camera. None like a M. None like M for telling the time. But arguably the most successful none like M. The Q. You know why should one be limited to just using a rangefinder to take your photos? But this the monochrome is all about limitations. You don't have color obviously, so everything has to be in black and white. Idiosyncratic limitations and the like M make sense. Sort of. Monochrome and M feel like a perfect pairing. It is a pairing that made some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. The history of black and white with the Q dates back 5 years ago. The Q is a modern-day camera made for modern-day photographers. It's made for convenience. Now, I think the Q3 is still the best full-frame compact camera, if you can call it compact. It's quite a big camera. Face detection, autofocus, 60 megapixels. It's made to be easy to use and versatile. Is as much at home taking arty street photos as it is taking your vacation photos and video, too. It's a camera for all situations. But by having it entirely in monochrome, it's not. With the Q3 monochrome, you really need to know that you want it and want it bad. Would you buy monochrome? — No. — Why? Don't shoot monochrome if it's completely on. See, that's in currently that's in monochrome, but that's just cuz I happen to be in a monochrome mood. It's not like 90% of what I shoot. And anyway, it's raw, so it will be color if I want it to be. I totally get why you choose monochrome. I just don't know that I'd want it as my — only — If it was a two grand camera, I might do it. — Yeah, — it's not. So, I'm not doing it. — That's where Pentax has come into play. — Very dedicated to your black and white to get that. — Yeah. — I tell you what, all the Nikons are surprisingly good in monochrome, and I've been surprised by that. — It's like even just the JPEG out of the camera is quite pleasant. I get the resolution thing and the micro detail and everything else with that. It's fantastic, but you know, I mean, you don't get it enough, — but I'm using a lens that cost like 100 quid or 150 quid, right? — Well, it's got to be said that Dan shoots Leica also. And moments later, he was looking at buying another one. I like the monochrome. I like the monochrome M. And I keep toying with the idea of having one. And I like the Q3 and the awkwardly named Q343. Q3 monochrome has that same fun factor of using a Leica M like body but with autofocus which I think makes it incredibly likable to use. It makes the photo taking process a carefree and frivolous point andoot experience. Just as Dan was saying, I get the technical advantages of a monochrome sensor, the dynamic range, noise, microcontrast, all that stuff, but it would be silly to suggest someone stop shooting color due to noise and dynamic range. It's 2025. All cameras can do that stuff well, and I would feel silly suggesting that you get a £5,800 camera for those reasons alone. And any potential owners should feel ashamed of themselves for telling others that they bought a monochrome only camera for micro contrast and dynamic range. The only good reason why you would get this camera is because it works for your creative flow. A high-res point andoot camera without the distraction of thinking about color when framing. It is really that simple. It's a purist's camera made by the purest of all purists brands. Could you just use monochrome mode on your regular sensor camera and then super glue it to prevent changing it? Yeah, but if you're even considering a Leica, you're probably not bargain hunting either. But even if you're not, you have to at least give Leica credit for even offering up such a niche option to photo enthusiasts in the first place. But the thing is, you would carry that everywhere, which is what I do, and not really care about it getting

mashed. — That's cuz it's cheap. — Yeah. — But like that, — you know, you take out three insurance policies with that. — And if I drop it, you'd be upset. — Yeah. — The second time we talked about dropping it in 2 minutes, — you'd take it. — Sometimes photography is just about having a camera and not using that one. — There we are. Quote of the day. — It doesn't mean I'm not buying expensive cameras. You're buying a lot of expensive cams.
