### Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00) []

Hello everybody. My name is Mangnai and I'm live from Dubai. This is my second live chat. It's some time since I uh had my last one. One reason is that my laptop crashed completely and I lost everything on a hard disk. That's um not very fun because I had some material there, pictures, videos, etc. I had not uh backed up. So that is all lost. Thankfully, I have a lot of backup. So I'm not uh short of images or videos, but it's always uh sad when you lose all you have. So now I make sure I run backup more regularly plus I uh have a subscription for uh backup in the cloud. Okay, welcome to the first year. I hope you can hear me. And um if you have any questions to me about aviation, about maybe about Dubai or specifically and uh about the ATAR aircraft. Okay, thank you so much. Um I'm now chief flight instructor for anset aviation training in Dubai which means I'm responsible for all the training in Hi Swain how are you? Swain is from Norway just like me. So that's great and it's um a great opportunity for me because I had retired from flying in Fiji. Originally I went to Fiji because they allow pilots to fly after 65 years of age but uh limited to domestic flights. But then the company changed managers on a higher level and uh it was decided that no everybody should retire at 65. So since I'm 65 now, I was told, "Sorry, we have to let you go. " And um that was a big disappointment because Fiji is a nice place to be, nice climate, nice people. But um then I got opportunity here in Dubai with Anset Aviation and uh they have taken welcome me in a wonderful way. There are wonderful people here and we are located at Al-Maktum airport. That's uh airport south of uh the main airport in Dubai. But in the future this airport will be uh the new main airport for Dubai. They will uh today it's only one runway. They will build four more runways and the huge terminal. So that will be the new main airport for Dubai and the old airport will become a residential area. Let's see does AR have fed or auto throttle? No, not at all. The ATR is quite manual in many ways but uh we have no something called engine electronic control and it's a 50% fadec there is a mechanical link from the power levers all the way to the fuel controller which is called the HMU hydromechanical unit and but there is also an engine electronic control uh computer that uh computes um the theoretical torque the engine can deliver and the current conditions. So it sees what position is the power liver, the pressure, altitude, the temperature and then it gives you the optimum uh torque. Then the polish is set in a single position called the notch. And the power lever is set there at takeoff and it stays there all the way until you have started descent and need to reduce power to keep the speed under control. It's a nice system. It simplifies your work a lot because you just have a selector takeoff, climb, cruise, and in between MCT for emergency use signal engine. It's uh makes life very easy for you.

### Segment 2 (05:00 - 10:00) [5:00]

Okay. Auto throttle. No. Um we don't have. So during descent on approach, you use the probably to adjust your speed as you fly the approach. But uh that's pretty easy to do. Do we have other questions from you? You can ask me anything. The benefit for me now we have an ATR simulator a 72600. So kind of a tool or toy if you think it's fun to play around. Yes. But it's a very important tool for training of pilots. Um oh here's a nice one from Rafael. Going on ATA 72600 typewriting soon. Any advice on how to prepare for it? Yes. um the companies or the training organizations are reluctant to give away manuals because they're the property of uh the companies but I have made a lot of videos you can look at them that will prepare you partially for the training so you get an idea about the cockpit the layout and some of the systems otherwise make sure you don't have any other appointments during the training. Make sure you can focus 100% about always get good rest, you eat well and stay fit because uh you have to learn a lot of uh information and it's not about passing a written test about the systems. It's to understand how it works when you're flying and during the training you will get a lot of failures and it's very nice to know aha when I get that fault light it means this so you have an idea how to respond to it yes we are checklists but uh it's always not to understand the reason why you get that fault light The autopilot is great uh in many ways better than many bigger airliners. It can uh do a lot of wonderful things. Um is it speed on elevators only? No. It doesn't work that way. Uh for the vertical mode, we have indicated air speed mode. That means you use it for takeoff and climb. So it gives you for example standard climb speed for ATR is 170 knots and it will maintain that speed all the way until level off. Then you have altitude hold mode. So you maintain your altitude all the way. And for the ascend you have vertical speed. So you set the rate of descent and uh we have an FMS with uh when you have the flight plan it can control your descent path. So you can have a continuous 3° from top of descent all the way to landing. There is no level off just a smooth flow all the way. Uh that's all you need in fact. And for navigation we have the FMS is the primary that's based on GPS. If you don't get your best issue signals and you have program pre-programmed all the departure and arrival routes, all the approaches for the airports in the database. So it's easy to set up. We have the airways. So you can say okay I will fly this departure runway. I fly this departure procedure. From there I follow a certain airway until a certain waypoint. From there I fly an arrival etc. So it's easier to set up once you learn it. When maintaining rough air penetration speed avoid turbulence. You cannot avoid because they often turbulence at low altitudes. Is descending the most effective way to mitigate degraded aircraft performance in icing conditions? Oh, this was a complex question Kevin. Um, so you have turbulence and the rough air speed is less than maximum cool speed. So you have reduced the speed and then you get ice. Um so if you know get degraded performance because eyes change the shape of the not only the wings but other parts of the

### Segment 3 (10:00 - 15:00) [10:00]

airframe antennas propeller spin is no con etc. So you get a lot of drag and that is slow you down. And the most effective way to mitigate when you reduce the speed you have to release power and if you start to speed because drag you can increase that power first. If that is not enough he has descent to keep his speed up. But um to fly in the best speed of turbulence around 180 knots, you have to reduce the power. That means if you get ice that increase the drag, you can increase that power back again. But in worst scenario, you have to descend to keep a safe speed. Okay. J does pilot can fly without NP indications or blank NP in mail. Does ATA recommend it? I have to open minimum equipment list. Let me see. I think I have it on my laptop. Okay, I have a minimum equipment list and this is uh NP. So that's power plant. Maybe I can share this video just Oh, I lost the index. Power plant, engine, fuel, and control, propellers, engine indication. There we are. NP NHN L torque indication IT. I think I have to go to propeller here. That will be at 61 pack channel 80p is the feather and indication. You can fly with one missing. Uh the condition is service in char you can fly with it up to 10 days. ETOP's not allowed and you must not operate into known or forecast icing That's the conditions. So thus they recommending they allow it on that conditions nos and no icing then one engine can miss the NP indication. So then it's up to the captain to agree if he wants to fly with that uh fault. It's always the captain's uh the commanders as the last word and they can say no I don't want to fly with this even it's allowed by regulation. How does it feel flying your last ATF flight on your retirement as pilot? It's never fun to have the last flight. But I didn't know I made my last flight when it happened because uh after my last flight, I had a week where I did a GR class and after finishing that they told me, "Sorry, you cannot fly anymore. " So I didn't know when I landed I have made the last flight in ATR. That's life. Okay. C8. I'm just curious how was experience flying in Nigeria like? Flying is uh every country is different for various reasons. Uh some part of flying Nigeria is uh easy the never experience too bad weather. Yes, they have strong thunderstorms but never during take off or landing which is the most critical part and they were not too big so you can fly around it. Um a challenge is uh that there is no data coverage in uh parts of the

### Segment 4 (15:00 - 20:00) [15:00]

country. So the major airports they have data coverage but in between there is no coverage. So flying to smaller airports you have to inform them your position, arrival time, how many on board etc. There are limited communication between airports. So they don't even know when you departed and how many people are on board your endurance. So you have to tell them everything and then also logos control which at the soften part of Nigeria they use a single frequency for a very vast area. So they have several transmitters and when you can hear more than one of them you get an interference and in this um case you got a strong echo when the signals are equally strong. So it has a gaka something like that and you really had to focus to understand what was said and equally um there are very barely had communication at all. So you had to look out because uh there were nobody on the radar looking out for you. So in a way you are on your own in many ways. But the big airports they have radar, they have all the facilities you expected. Yeah. Okay. Um the problem in Nigeria was not flying. That was the safety because in Nigeria it's there are places you shouldn't go especially alone and absolutely not at night because there are many people who are very poor and you get very desperate if you're hungry, right? And they're gangs with uh often young men and they uh rob people just to get money to feed themselves and so you cannot walk alone. U that's the danger. So I living in a safe area um where I can walk freely but not much to do there. couple of restaurants, supermarket to get to a real supermarket. So, I had to call the company, bring a car, and the driver took me around to the places I wanted to go. So, that was the negative part of being there. But lot of great people. Absolute, absolute. Um, Air India 787 crash and interim investigation report. I made a video about that and later other people with better knowledge about aircraft they pointed out something very critical. The interim report indirectly puts blame on the pilots. That's really dangerous because and then they compare it where uh German wings accident 10 years back where they blend the first officer to dy the aircraft into the ground. Um the problem with Air India is that in the interim report you see a picture where the RAM air turbine has deployed and the aircraft is quite low I say less than 100 ft above the ground and the ram turbine is already deployed and what the experts say is that turbine is about 7 seconds after a double flame out for example total loss of electric power or total loss of hydraulic power. It will take 7 seconds for it to deploy and start to produce power. That means it's already down. That means this must have happened with something must have happened in the engine before the fuel switches is set to cut off. And then the expert says the restart procedure is to select fuel select the switch to cut off then to run and that's exactly what happened. So there without knowing when did they say what was the tone in the voice was this distress they also say who listen to the ATC recording when they send the mayday they call they were a calm voice so was this intentional I doubt it it's so easy to blame the

### Segment 5 (20:00 - 25:00) [20:00]

pilots who cannot defend themselves And without knowing exactly what happened when and what was said, this is impossible to know. So I think we should leave that open and I hope the investigation will reveal what really happened. There have been incident with the same aircraft type in Japan where the aircraft had landed and then a computer shut on both engines while they were taxing and initially the pilots were blamed for doing this but then they discovered this was a computer glitch and so maybe there is something similar we don't know because the information is so sparse but I don't want to blame pilots for this because there is no evidence that they should do this u there is one captain from India I don't remember his name or channel name he went through this and set up a timeline for what happened and move it back this engine master failed closed the rotation and the cut switch is to cut off later. So that's something to think about. Okay. How does pilot train communicating with ATC in simulator 2? Uh when you go to flight school, you start on a in a classroom where you get briefed about the procedures. You can have role plays. So you learn the basic pathology. There are videos, there are books, and then when you start flying, you learn to talk to ATC. So you learn by doing. And when you come into a simulator like in an ATR, you should know the basics. So it should be easy to continue. Yeah. Okay. Here's a good one. Why is power management on takeoff limited to five minutes during takeoff? Why? MCT has no time limit considering MCT produce more torque than takeoff. This is about engine wear and tear. Every takeoff is normal. It happens every time and MCT is very unusual. We use it only for emergency like a windshare micro burst uh ground proximate warning all that where you need to climb rapidly and most efficiently and engine out one engine uh when you fly with one engine out otherwise you don't use MCT so you rarely use it yes you can use MCT continuously without burning out the engine, but you wear it. The wear is higher than for takeoff. Uh, normally use takeoff power less than a couple of minutes. So, you're well inside the limit. But high temperature will wear out the engine. So, therefore, they set the limit. And also normal takeoff is only 90% of the power because if an engine fails a takeoff you get an automatic increase to 100% in case of an one engine phase and that is allowed for 10 minutes. Now we have 100% power. Of course this is uh doesn't happen very often. You get an flame at a takeoff but it's allowed and the engine will not fail. Yeah. Should I make a video on Air India 787? I think I will make a video where I link to those people who know how this aircraft operates and know how to assess the report. But since people are linking this to German wings 10 years back, I want to make a video about that one because uh if you follow Aviation Herald, they report all the incidents and accidents in aviation, civil aviation, and they have read the investigation reports, not the report from the investigation branch, aviation investigation, but the real that produced thousands of pages and lot of information there is not included in the final report. So when they start to read that they made some starting discoveries which I will cover in a

### Segment 6 (25:00 - 30:00) [25:00]

video. Okay Bradley I have an question. When flying in flight see the airspeed ribbon has a yellow arrow and a double yellow line. What do these air speeds mean? The yellow arrow moves up and down. That's a speed trend. And it shows with the current acceleration or deceleration. This will be use the point of the arrow will show the speed we have 10 seconds from now. Uh the uh double yellow lines they are marking your flap ret uh extension speed. So when you're decelerating during approach, the first line will be at 185 knots. From here you can set flap 15 and then you continue decelerating and the next lines come at 250. Here you can set flaps 30. We usually let the speed increase 10 knots below. So we have a margin for gust and turbulence to avoid over speed for the flap. Which country has been your best to fly in and which have been your worst? Wow. I've been flying in eight different countries. Norway. That will be a favorite because I'm from Norway. So that's uh a great country to fly in. Um then I flew in Philippines. Very interesting. a good mix of IFR and VFR. Big airport, small airports. I really enjoyed it. Then I flew in Syria before the war. So it was peaceful. It was a very hot summer, more than 40°. Uh I only stayed a couple of months, but great people, lot to old history to see. The sad thing is a lot of this is damaged by the war. Then you flew in Maldives for um few years and very easy operation because all around the sea level, no obstacles, easy operation, just look out for sea planes. There can be a lot of them. Then I flew in Taiwan. Um there's the culture in East Asia is quite different from other parts of Asia. Um Taiwan is no difference. There is a strong punishment culture where uh we want what we really want is a just culture. We acknowledge we do mistakes and we should self-report them that unless you do something on purpose then they will react of course but honest mistakes should not be punished. Uh then Thailand top three again because I live in Bangkok, my family is Thai and I flew with Bangkok Airways, a wonderful company. They really look after the employees. Uh I only left because of COVID. I had to reduce the production and lay off I think it was 150 pilots. It was really sad. I had to go then follow Nigeria and then back to Maldives for another company there who introduced ATR. I love that at work but as I got close to 65 I start to look for a place where I could fly after 65 and in the Pacific there many countries allowing this. So I come to Fiji and interesting operation with some really interesting airports which are really low and great people there too. So I would say the best countries I would say uh most of them are the best. Uh so maybe Nigeria is the worst because of the living conditions you cannot walk around freely. Okay. Why does most turbo ste rubber leading edge boots instead of engine heated metal ones on the most jets? Uh turbo probes have very little power excess power. For example, when you put on air condition, it takes bleed air from the engine that reduce the engine power by 5%. just the air condition and the heating for the leading edge will take even more. But the boots take just a

### Segment 7 (30:00 - 35:00) [30:00]

miniature amount of power from the engine. So it's very energy conservative. You conserve energy which means you don't need to put in excessively big engines in the aircraft. The boots are modern boots are quite effective. No problem about that. But uh on ATR you increase your speed when ice on the airframe on the even if it just residue ice you increase the speed to protect yourself because it alter the shape aerodynamic shape of the wing. So you may stall at less angle attack but um it's um I would say if you really want heating you should do go electric that may uh require less uh power from the engines but of course then you need bigger generators but that might be a way to go. I think at their next generation EVO which they also be an hybrid they will uh I think they will use electric heating that can be quite interesting. Oh hi just thank you for coming. Uh so more questions you can ask anything. Um otherwise I can talk a little about Dubai. Um coming to Dubai is uh quite interesting because some countries you need to apply for visa before you arrive. Others get visa on arrival and um that's an easy process. They're more and more automatic processing for immigration. So in the future when you check in the camera record you and you can walk straight to the gate there will be cameras monitoring you and make sure yes you have checked in you are approved. So that's very efficient and also I got the work permit in 24 hours in Fiji it took four months quite a difference. So Dubai is very efficient and uh I also got an ID card within a week I think which means uh with that ID card I can open bank accounts and it's paperless bank so all on the app on the phone very easy to use easy to transfer money to other countries and yeah it's very user friendly And yeah, you need a car to get around. Taxis are a bit expensive, but the company provide a car for me. And uh so I can get around shopping malls, a bit too many of them, but uh great experiences. One shopping mall has a ski resort where you can go skiing. Another one has a ice rink full size and u model of Dubai also has a deep sea pool where you can go free diving down I think 60 m deep huge aquarium. So there's a lot to see. Yes. And you can go so far into the desert. It doesn't cost too much either. and uh great restaurants, great food. I choose to stay in a hotel because uh through my company I get a big discount. So it will not cost more than renting an apartment. Okay, apartment can be will be bigger but here is included breakfast uh which I really enjoy and the stuff here is fantastic. So it's so easy if uh AC breaks down. Okay, they fix it. You need a light bulb changed, they fix it. So that's the benefit and uh I really enjoy staying in this place and the stuff they learn your name and they always greet you always positive and those people working outside it's plus 47 at the most here and still people smile and say hello to you quite amazing. Yeah. Okay. C8. Which aircraft would you have wished to get a typewritten on apart from the ATR commercial? Oh, I would like to fly some of the old classics. People talk so emotionally about Boeing 727 the three

### Segment 8 (35:00 - 40:00) [35:00]

engine. It's a challenge to fly they say, but very rewarding. um your aircraft I would say the Airbus because ATR share the philosophy with Airbus. The cockpit, the buttons, the dials, the center has the same displays as the Airbus 380. Yeah, it's more modern than the Airbus 320. It's really amazing. Uh hi Petra. Hello from Sweden. You know um Norway Sweden. We are good friends. We always Yes, we are friendly jokes about each other but we are the best friends and we have to include the Danish as well. We are Scandinavians. We are Vikings. We are great. Okay. But if we don't say uh commercial airliners on my bucket list is uh to fly Spitfire a rating. You can take a rating in United Kingdom at economy there. They have two seats Spitfires. The program is 10 and a half hour. It cost a fortune. Uh so it remains on my back list, I'm afraid. But that one flight would be great. I wish I could do that. How long can you use Max? Probably on the wall. That's emergency power. There is no limit. You only use it to save your life. For example, you get into a micro burst and the aircraft doesn't climb. You start to lose altitude. You're very low to the ground. You set max power pitch up. You're on the edge of the stick shaker and still the ground is coming closer. You go all the way to the wall. You get 15% torque. The engine run very hot. That's the limit. There's no time limit because it's always better to reduce the life on the engine and save your life than crashed aircraft. So therefore no published limit but use it only to save your life. Okay. Have a photo of flying for air sealand they have idea fleet for regional flights. I think they will not hire a pilot because of my age. Um they uh have 30 ATRs and they have some really nice operations. They for example they have an R&P approach valley into one of the airports. So they have in installed IRS in the aircraft as a backup for the GPS because if you're done in the middle of the valley high mountains on the side if the GPS fails you need IRS to save your butt so you can navigate safely. Yeah, it could be nice to fly there. Absolute. Uh but right now I have this job but uh never say neighbor never. Okay. Thank you dear real Hawkeye Alexander. Hello. Thank you so much. Any additional guidance on the tilt angle usage on the weather radar? Yes, the manufacturer of the red radar has a leaflet, a small book explain how to use the radar. Um, but the tilt, I don't agree with them. I learned the best procedure for tilt did I learned during my 600 training some years about 10 years back in Singapore. And he certainly say I learned this from boy. you when you take off use 5° tilt up 10,000 ft above the ground reduce one degree that's four 15,000 ft reduce one degree now we have three and 20,000 ft reduce again now we have 2° pitch now tilt on the radar and that works beautifully maybe just half a degree up and down but of course the radar has to be adjusted correctly I flown ATR where you have to set 8° to avoid ground clutter. So it has to be dressed correctly. But that method works brilliant perfectly. Yeah. Petra, yes, we are the best friends. Absolute agree. Hello Tashkant. Yeah. Hi. Oh, we met. We already met here in Dubai. Yes. That's fun. Alexander. Ah

### Segment 9 (40:00 - 45:00) [40:00]

do you train pilots with EBT electronic? Did you mean EFP electronic flight? I'm not sure about EBT what it means. If yet is a widespread approach among companies in Dubai and Maldives. Um I'm not sure what EP means. Event based training. Yes, that's uh what's coming more and more. Uh current programs don't have it. EBT is what you really should do during recurrent training because you give them a scenario. They are not in briefed about the scenario but this is a scenario that has happened before in other operations and they include a surprise element as a part of the training because if you brief beforehand you will do this and this. That's what we do in the trip because we want them you to prepare for these failures so you can study the system again and understand the procedure. But evidence-based training means something different. Now you are already rated on the aircraft. You're flying it and now you come back for the training and they give a scenario you're not briefed about and that will be more realistic. It times consuming because uh you cannot rush forward things but it's a brilliant method of training because it's more realistic. Yeah. uh I don't know about companies in Dubai but they are very far ahead in training here. So like Emirates they for example I read one captain say they had once full flight on raw data no FMS no flight director nothing so fly a full flight on raw data I think that's brilliant because very often gear up autopilot on right but you should really feel the aircraft and Airbus issued me some years back and then recommended pilots is to fly manually when the workload is low. So you're not too busy and the conditions allow for it. So not thunderstorm and bad weather because automatication is your the third pilot in the cockpit, right? So I think it should be done. Do you fly any general aviation? No, very little. Um, two years ago I went to Norway. I flew two aircraft and recorded it. I flew an North American Harvard — built in Canada in United States called a T6 and I posted a video about that. very fun because I did aerobatics and a few days later I flew a Yak 52 also full arerobatic and uh I post the videos about it you will find them but um that was an experienced instructor in the front seat an aerobatic pilot and I just touched the stick a few minutes just to get a little feeling so it's um I cannot say I fly generally aviation anymore, but there are possibilities here in Emirates. I heard about the flying clubs, so maybe I can do it. Yeah. Okay, I have a few minutes left. I will have a hangout with members later on in uh 15 minutes. So, you can continue for five or 10 minutes if you have more questions. Another question in the simulator while running the engines on the ground if you feather the prop, the prop RPM drops and you lose AC power. Is this realistic? Yes. Uh when you feather the propellers, it's a preparation to shut down the engine. So the propeller in ground idle with the propeller in auto they will run at 70. 8% NP. So the AC generator is running but when you feather the NP drops below 15%. And uh you just that's a procedure to

### Segment 10 (45:00 - 49:00) [45:00]

shut down the engine. You let it run there in feather for 30 seconds to allow the oil use the feather propeller return back into the tank and then you shut it down on legac without tech. Do you how do you determine the propeller speed setting of the clamp procedure during cruise? the condition errors will move back and forth and you just look at the NP and set it to desired NP and normal climb will be 86% NP and as you get higher and the torque reduce it can go down to 77% NP but in icing you have to increase up to 86 again so just look at NP and the synrasacer so they will work together. What is the name of the Yak 52 pilot? Um, Ste. Uh, so this is uh what do they call it now? Uh, East Europe historic aircraft. Is it that Eastern European aircraft? Uh, Steinness, I flew with him, but the other pilots too. Martin Christianson which I know very well because uh he once was a student of me there are two of the pal on the yakand thank you if a trainer wish is to train more is that possible given how similarly such changed by the charge by the hour it's possible to do extra training yes but uh you have to pay for Yes. Um the charge is it depends on the customer because if you negotiate many hours over a certain period, you get a discount compared to some who only fly a single uh session. So it's about $4004$450 US per hour in the for the sim. Uh no uh Steinerness I don't know Evan only Steiner and Mort Christianson there two other pilots. Yeah, but if you go to the website, you will find all the pilots they have there. And there is also one other aircraft on my bucket list. That's the uh the jet they have, the Dolphin, the L29. I would like to fly that one. Yes. Okay. I think I had round it out. Would you recommend flight training in the Philippines? There are flight schools. Uh some say it's a great place. I know one from India who went to flight school there. He got a job in Philippines. Just remember one thing. When you do flight train in Philippines, you get a license issued by Philippine CIA. This license is only valid for aircraft registered in the Philippines. So you need a Philippine register. If you want to fly in another country, you have to convert that license. And for example, my friend from India, he flew with CEO Pacific afterwards. Got a rating there. Come back to India and start to convert into Indian license. That's time consuming. You have many exams even an oral exam. So that takes time and cost money. Take that into account. Yes. Okay, I think that's all for this time. So, thank you to all of you and I wish you all the best and happy learning. I hope to come back within a reasonable time. I'm going to Norway next weekend. Let's see if I can have a live show from uh Oslo. I will go on uh examiner seminar in Oslo two days. So I will stay in Norway for one week, see family etc. Okay. So thank you so much to all of you. Have a wonderful day and happy planning. Bye-bye.
