How do you give new life to a memory?

Filmmaker and animator Siobhan Twomey (aka @Drawing-Life) shares the story behind Jessie, a personal animation created in Procreate Dreams 2. Inspired by her dog’s journey from rescue puppy to studio companion, Siobhan walks through the creative choices that shaped the piece.

She shows how the new Flipbook feature helped her isolate drawing layers and add movement quickly, then demonstrates how easy it was to bring in illustrations from Procreate and drop in a voiceover file. Along the way, she reflects on how accessible workflows helped her stay focused on storytelling while bringing the animation to life.

The power of animation is just so incredible because an animated story, it allows the viewer in because it's drawn from somebody's personal point of view. That's a really beautiful way to allow an audience to feel something different. — Hey Siobhan, thanks for jumping on. — Hey LA, how are you? — I'm great. I'm so excited to hear what you're working on. Can you tell me a little bit about it? — Yeah, sure. Um, I'm working on a short animated clip in Procreate Dreams about my dog Jesse. I found her in my local animal shelter and we immediately connected. I honestly thought that I heard her saying, "It's you. " When she saw me. So, I wanted to put that into an animation and just tell a little bit about how she became the dog for me. Oh my god, that is so cute. It feels like I'm watching a short film. The way it pans across the dogs who are also in motion. How did you do that? — Right. Yeah. Well, so I really wanted to get that sense of I was walking past, you know, quite a lot of like really cute puppies. I did all of the artwork in Procreate except for the characters which I painted in Procreate Dreams. But it's so easy and seamless just to move artwork from Procreate into Procreate Dreams. You can just simply drag it over and drop it in. Once I did that, I created the whole thing in a group and I key framed that panning motion to give the effect of the camera moving. — Could you show us a little bit of the dogs that you worked on in Procreate Dreams? — Yeah, definitely. So, this dog here is this character right here. I actually painted and drew this in flip book within Procreate Dreams. So, I'm going to just open that up for you so you can see it. And I wanted this little dog to have a kind of a head tilt. The way I did that was I separated out the dog's head and the body and just animated it very gently in Flipbook. The reason I did that is because these characters like the little puppies in the animal shelter and Jesse herself, they're the characters that are moving in the story. So, I wanted to be able to draw them inside of Procreate Dreams and animate them in Flipbook. Here, I wanted Jesse to be sort of jumping in, if you like. So, I've got her legs on one track in Flipbook and then her body on another track and then her tail on a third. And that allowed me to sort of animate her jumping through because it's really just the legs that are changing. Often a little subtle movement is all you need. So, so easy. in Flipbook because you can add tracks and animate different sections of your character. — The voice over that you have on it also blends so smoothly. Was that hard to line up in Procreate Dreams or is it a separate kind of project? — Not at all. I that was one of the easiest parts. Just tap on that plus icon and add it in under file. You can bring in an audio file that way. And what I did was I basically recorded myself on my phone and dropped it into one of the tracks. My advice to anyone putting a project together like this is do your soundtrack first because the sound file gave me the beats of the story. — Similarly, how does it feel in your workflow to go from illustrating to animating? How does Procreate kind of connect in that world for you? — For me personally, the way my process and my workflow, it all starts with a kind of really rough idea, a storyboard, which you can do right inside Procreate Dreams. So, let me just show you this. So, if I open this up, you can see my rough drawings right there. That really rough, crazy looking sketch is my foundation. That's basically how this animation comes together in the first place. I had drawn all of my scenes out from start to finish. And then once that was in place, the rest sort of just flowed really, really easily cuz I knew exactly what I had to do. I'm kind of wondering what the experience of illustrating and animating a real thing is like Jesse is obviously your dog and a real dog. Is it emotional? Is it tricky because you want to make it as realistic as possible? What does that balance feel like? And how does it affect you while you're creating? — I tell you that's a great question. I feel like I got to know Jesse even more when I was making this animation. It's quite an incredible process to draw some someone that you know and animate them because you really get a sense of their personality, little quirks about how they move. But I felt like it was so easy to create this character and to animate this character

because I know her so well. And yeah, I think in the end I really capture her spirit, her playful sort of, you know, joyful spirit. Well, thank you so much for sharing your story, Siobhan. Jesse is so lucky to have you. — Oh, thanks, La. Thanks for stopping by and yeah, we'll chat to you very soon. I found Jesse at my local animal shelter. When I saw her, I heard her sing clear as day, it's you. That's how I knew she was the dog for me. Now, she comes to work with me everyday and helps me out in the studio. pencil, paintbrush, eraser, but mostly her job is to make sure that I take a lot of breaks. I'd be lost without her, and I'm so glad we found each other.
