## Описание

We’ve been told that more freedom leads to more creativity… but that’s actually a myth.

In this clip, David Epstein explains why unlimited options often lead your brain to take the path of least resistance – doing the same things over and over again.

Because real creativity doesn’t come from endless freedom – but from constraints that force you to think differently.

If you feel stuck or uninspired, the answer might just be to have fewer options.

the quote from Herbert Simon. It is a myth widely believed but not less mythical for that people are most creative when they are most free. And I really like this you touched on this at the beginning. I really think most creative people and even non-creative people thinking about creative people think like it's all about this boundless endless freedom when it comes to creativity. And it turns out that that's not really what the research shows and not what actually you know, drives true creativity. — It was basically tied with the fact that brainstorming works. So we know that group brainstorming doesn't work very well. It seems like it makes so much sense, right? We think of artists and creative types just like limited only by their imagination. As the cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham has said, "You may think your brain's made for thinking, but it's not. It's actually designed to prevent you from having to think whenever possible because thinking is metabolically costly. So we would prefer to be lazy whenever possible. If we're given complete freedom, our brains go down what psychologists call the path of least resistance, meaning — you will just do the thing you've always done before.
