### Segment 1 (00:00 - 03:00) []

How to respond when someone says, "Okay, I've just had a lot going on lately. " Like a leader, not a manager. Well, number one is we want to acknowledge without excusing. A manager says, "Everyone's busy. " But a leader says, "I I can tell. I can see that it's weighing on you. What what's been going on? " We take a minute here. All right, we want to build a connection with this person. And this empathy, it builds trust over time. So, it is absolutely worth taking the extra second here. What what's been taking most of your focus right now? Or what's been like the biggest challenge for you? If you take 5 minutes right here just to check in on how they're doing, that's going to build trust. Whereas if you just move on, that breaks trust in seconds. So, let's take the time here. Then number two is we're going to bring it back to ownership. But a manager says, "Well, that's not an excuse. " But as a leader says, "All right, well, let's think about it. Like how can we make sure that work is still moving forward through all this? " We put support and accountability together, right? What's getting in the way right now? Once we understand like what's getting in the way right now, then we can help come up with a solution. What support would help you move forward? Or how can we navigate this so that nothing falls behind? Cuz that's just going to create more stress for them. So, at this point, we might have a candid conversation. And Kim Scott says, "Candor is caring personally about someone. Taking the time to listen and care about what they're going through. At the same time, we can challenge directly. " And that is a great approach right here. So, the number three is we're going to reset expectations clearly. Manager just says, "Well, you need to fix this. " But a leader says, "All right, what's a realistic plan to get you back on track? " And clarity, that creates movement and momentum. What's your next step? Not telling, I'm asking. And that creates a spark to get things moving. And we put a deadline on it. When will that be done? This is going to create accountability. And John Maxwell says, "Accountability is the glue that puts commitment and results together. " So, whereas a manager might dismiss or excuse, a leader is acknowledging, empathizing, but then turning that into the type of accountability that makes them want to commit. make a comeback. And look, leadership is not a title.
