Success is the opportunity to do more of what you're currently doing. This is where I had my first creative job ever. In 2011, I had just graduated film school and I got a job as an assistant editor here. And the job was to work on a film called Ides of March and for an editor named Steven Marion. — He edited Swingers. He did the oceans films 11 and 12 and 13. He won an Oscar for traffic. — So he decided to take me out to lunch here at Terrace Mexican Grill. And that lunch changed my life. and we would come here every day for lunch. But on this day, he wanted to ask me why I was so frustrated. I started by explaining to him that I felt like everything we were doing here in this editing room was moving really slow. It didn't feel like the creative energy back in film school where I would come up with an idea, grab a camera, I would write it, direct it, produce it, edit it, act in it. I could do everything, upload it to the internet, and send it to my friends in like a week. So, he gave me the best piece of advice I've ever gotten. He said, "Right now, you're an assistant editor, and you're pretty good as I'd hire you again as an assistant editor. Then I'd recommend you to my friends as an assistant editor, and you'll keep getting jobs as an assistant editor until maybe one day, if you're lucky, you could be me. Do you want that? " And I said, "No, I don't want that at all. I want to do something with a lot more creative energy. " He said, "So, whatever is in your head, whatever that thing is you just described to me, go do that. Figure it out. Get another job if you need to pay your bills. however you need to, but do that thing that's in your head because success in our industry is just the opportunity to do more of what you're currently doing.
