Ok, to be clear, this is probably a bad idea, but I spent five quick minutes using Webflow Cloud to create an app that brings back a small part of the old web... the hit counter.

Everybody, this is Raymond Camden, Webflow developer evangelist, and I have been working on the web for a very, very long time. And in that time, I've seen a lot of trends come and go, and for the most part, most of the things that left, it's good that they're gone. They're bad practices, they're bad UX, etc., etc. But there's one thing that I thought was kind of fun that I kind of miss. And that is the hit counter. Now, if you have never seen this before, uh it is a graphical representation of how many people have visited your website. Now, this was before analytics packages and things like that. It was just a very simple counter. And like every time you would go to the webpage and reload, you would see that number go up, and you would get so excited, especially if it went up, you know, while you were doing something else. I thought, "Why not see if I could quickly build this in Webflow? " And obviously, I did because you're seeing it live right here. How did I do this? This took about 5 minutes. I used our key-value store feature as part of Webflow Cloud. This gives us a uh key-value persistence system that's easy to use. I then went and built a Astro application that has a grand total of one file. And it is an API route responds to hit. json. And all it's doing is getting my key-value storage, getting a value called hits, and then adding one to it. It returns it via JSON. To set this up, and our documentation talks about this as well, uh all I did was go into my regular JSON and add the binding. Now, that binding name, hit counter, you'll notice that's what I use in the code. Now, back on the Webflow side, I went ahead and in my designer, I used a code embed. I cheated a bit and used a bit of AI to create that layout for me. So, you see some CSS, but really it all comes down to doing a JavaScript fetch call to that Webflow Cloud app that is returning the key-value storage as a number and then putting it on screen. Again, all of 5 minutes. Not the most useful thing to do with Webflow Cloud, but fun. So, let me know if there's anything else you want to see from the old days brought back. I really enjoyed this. Tell me what you think.
