We analyzed more than 2 million YouTube videos — both long-form and Shorts — to find the exact times people are most likely to engage. Here's what the data shows.

The best time to post long-form YouTube videos is Sunday at 10 a.m. Mornings between 8 and 11 a.m. dominate.

The best time to post YouTube Shorts is Friday at 4 p.m. Evenings between 6 and 11 p.m. dominate.

Yes — they're almost opposite. If you're posting both formats, schedule them on opposite ends of the day.

In this video, I walk you through the full breakdown, plus how to find your own personal best time using YouTube Studio, and how to schedule everything in Buffer in about 60 seconds.

### Intro []

The best time to post regular YouTube videos is not the same as the best time to post shorts and I have the data to prove that. At Buffer, we just analyzed more than 2 million YouTube videos, both long-form and shorts, to find the exact times that people are most likely to engage. And while the best time to post on YouTube isn't going to turn a flat video into a viral hit, it is one of the easiest boxes you can take to give high-quality content the boost that it deserves. In the next few minutes, I will show you the single best time to post long-form YouTube videos, or regular YouTube videos, and the best time to post YouTube shorts. Plus, how to find your exact best time for your audience, rather than just the average one. Let's get into it. YouTube

### Long-form vs Shorts: almost opposite peak times [0:44]

videos and shorts have almost opposite peak times. Our data pretty clearly shows that shorts and long-form videos probably shouldn't be posted in tandem. Long-form videos tend to peak in the morning, especially Sundays, but more on that in a sec. But, shorts are the complete opposite. Shorts tend to get more engagement in the evening and Friday absolutely dominates. The top three slots for shorts are all on Friday afternoon and evening. It makes sense when you think about it. People are scrolling shorts to unwind. They're looking for idle entertainment, rather than something specific. They probably watch long-form videos, on the other hand, with a purpose. So, they're more likely to do that with their morning coffee on a Sunday to learn a new skill or check in with their favorite creator. So, if, like me, you are posting both formats, schedule them at opposite ends of the day. Right, let's get into the full picture. The best time to post long-form

### The best time to post long-form YouTube videos [1:38]

YouTube videos. In our analysis of more than 2 million YouTube videos, there's one slot that beats every other time of the week. The single best time to post long-form YouTube videos is Sunday at 10:00 a. m. And other slots are not even close. Videos uploaded in that slot scored the highest engagement of the entire week, well above any other time. Coming in at second place was Sunday at 9:00 a. m. and then Friday at 12:00 p. m. The broader pattern is that mornings tend to be best for long-form content on YouTube. Between roughly 8:00 a. m. and 11:00 a. m. is where the engagement tends to happen. But, if Sunday isn't already on your posting schedule, take this as your sign. Now, Sunday might not work for everyone. I totally get that. So, if you're looking for more top times plus the top three times for every single day of the week, definitely be sure to check them out on the Buffer blog. I'll link to them up here and in the caption below. And before you ask, these times are localized. So, the data is based on the poster's time zone. They apply whether you're in New York or London or Mumbai. No time zone conversion needed. You're welcome. The best and worst days to post long-form

### The best (and worst) days for long-form [2:46]

YouTube videos. The best day of the week for long-form is Sunday, followed by Tuesday, and then Monday. The worst days are Wednesday and Thursday, with Thursday at the very bottom. So, if you're building a posting schedule from scratch, those are the days to deprioritize or at least be really strategic about your timing. Now, let's move on to the best time to post

### The best time to post YouTube Shorts [3:06]

YouTube Shorts. These three times tend to get the most engagement on YouTube Shorts. Based on our analysis of 2 million videos, the best time to post a short is Friday at 4:00 p. m. Next up is Friday at 6:00 p. m. and in third place is Friday at 7:00 p. m. Yes, three Friday evening slots take the top three spots. Friday is the undisputed best day for posting YouTube Shorts. And the broader pattern is evenings. Between 6:00 p. m. and 11:00 p. m. is where Shorts engagement tends to peak, which makes complete sense if you think about how people actually watch Shorts. It's a scroll before bed, unwinding on the sofa kind of activity. You're most likely to be looking for entertainment than watching with a specific purpose. Now, the worst times to post Shorts is generally in the afternoons between 12:00 p. m. and 5:00 p. m. with Friday being the only exception. I guess people are unwinding earlier on Fridays. Again, if you're looking for more top times, plus the top three times for every single day of the week, not just Friday, be sure to check them out on the Buffer blog. I'll link to that blog post up here and in the caption. Also, if you're a Buffer user, did you know that you have access to the best time to post YouTube shorts and every other platform that Buffer supports right in the Buffer calendar? And it's completely free. Jump to the next section to see how to use it. The best and worst

days to post YouTube shorts. Let's zoom out from specific hours for a second and look at the days themselves. The best day to post YouTube shorts is, of course, Friday. Three of the top performing slots of the entire week are all on Friday afternoon and evening. The second best is Saturday and the third is Thursday. So, if you're only posting shorts a few times a week, anchor your schedule around the latter half, so Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Now, the flip side, the worst days to post YouTube shorts are Tuesday and Monday. Again, this is the complete opposite of long-form YouTube videos, where Tuesday and Monday are actually in the top three days. So, now you know all of these optimal times, you could write them down, set reminders, keep a spreadsheet, whatever is going to work best for you. But, there is an easier way. Posting

times to post. Now, here's the bit that probably none of the other best times to post guides are going to tell you. These times are general recommendations based on a massive data set, but your audience is not the average audience. Every audience is different, and what works for one may not work for another. So, let me show you how to find your personal best posting time using YouTube's own analytics. Step one is to head over to YouTube Studio. The easiest way is just typing studio. youtube. com in your browser. Step two, click on analytics on the left-hand side, and step three, click on the audience tab at the top. Step four is to scroll down until you see when your viewers are on YouTube. This can be incredibly helpful. It's a heat map showing you the exact times that your audience is active on YouTube. The darker purple slots indicate when more of your viewers are on the app. Now, these times are not going to show you what they're doing on YouTube, so you won't be able to tell if this means they're going to be watching shorts or they're watching long-form. Plus, this is your current audience. So, if you're looking to reach more or different people, I'd advise that, just like with Buffer's data, you use these times as a starting point for experimentation. Pick some of these times, or Buffer's best times, or both, stick to a schedule for a few weeks, and see if you can identify patterns. Pro tip, this data refreshes every 28 days, so peak times may shift. Check this section of YouTube Studio as part of your monthly social media routine, so you always know when your audience is online. Okay, time for some real talk before we wrap up.

### The real talk [8:37]

Posting at the best time on YouTube may give your video a boost, — but it is not going to save a video that people don't want to watch. Your thumbnail, your title, your first 15 seconds, and the actual quality of your content matter way more than whenever you're going to post. Think of best time to post as the easiest box to tick on a much longer checklist. Tick it, keep making better content, and stick with it. YouTube is absolutely a marathon, not a sprint. So, quick recap, the best time to post long-form content on YouTube is Sunday at 10:00 a. m. with mornings generally getting the most engagement overall. Then, the best time to post YouTube Shorts is Friday at 4:00 p. m. with evenings tending to get the most engagement overall. Then, be sure to check your own audience data in YouTube Studio and fine-tune from there. Lastly, if you haven't already, sign up to Buffer to get access to the absolute latest data that we have on the best time to post YouTube Shorts, as well as all the other platforms that Buffer supports. Speaking of other social platforms, if you are looking for the best times to post on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, and more, I have you covered in this playlist. I'm going to link to all of them right up here. Now, if you've already done your experimenting and you have found a sweet spot for your channel that breaks all of these rules, I would love to hear it and drop it in the comments. We don't gatekeep. I really hope you found this video helpful. I'll see you in the next one.
