### Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00) []

China is the largest e-commerce market in the world. There's over a billion shoppers with tons of money moving every single day and most of that activity is happening inside one app called WeChat. So naturally, you're thinking, how do I start selling on WeChat? Well, if you think that WeChat is like Amazon or Shopify, I have big news for you. On WeChat, there's no search bar that people use to find your product and unlike Amazon, there's no buy box to win. So if you show up expecting a marketplace, well, you could lose every single dollar that you invest into WeChat. So today, I'm going to walk you through how foreign businesses like you can actually start selling on WeChat. So before I walk you through how to actually set up a WeChat account, you need to know that three things make WeChat completely different than anything that you've ever sold on before. First, there's no built-in demand. So you have to bring every single customer to WeChat yourself. Second, foreign sellers can't access every feature because some tools are locked behind a Chinese business license. And third, the whole system runs on trust instead of traffic. That means more messages, more chats, and more hand-holding. Okay, so if you're still here, let's get into the actual setup of your WeChat account. So the first thing that you need to do is to check to see if you're even eligible because a lot of sellers waste time and money before they realize that they don't even qualify. So here's what you need to know. To register, your company needs to be legally registered outside of China. All right, you probably marked that box. However, you need to have your official business documents ready for your company. You need one real person who can act as the account admin. That's probably going to be you. And your product can't be in a restricted category. The categories that get rejected the most often are going to be finance, supplements, medical products, real estate, and financial services. Basically, the Chinese government doesn't want you making an account around anything involving money. If you're in one of those categories, sort that out before you go any further because WeChat doesn't allow temporary or partial setups for businesses that fail that verification. Or just try registering. That will be your biggest litmus test to see if your business can actually register. You should know though that there is about $100 registration fee which I'll talk about in a minute. Now, there's one part of this whole process that almost every foreign seller gets wrong. I'll cover that in a minute. By the way, I'm going to link to EComCrew's own WeChat page so you can check out and see what a foreign owned WeChat page actually looks like. Okay, so I'm going to walk you through setting up what's called a WeChat service account. There are different types of accounts on WeChat and this is the only account type that Tencent, WeChat's owner, allows foreign companies to own legally. The other type of account is called a subscription account. But overseas companies only qualify for the service account. So, the choice is already made for you. You are not getting a subscription account without a partner in China. Now, a service account doesn't actually sell products by itself. So, let me just quickly explain to you the difference between a service account and a mini program or a store within WeChat. You can think of your service account as basically being either a Facebook page or a blog. You're not actually going to sell anything directly through this page. But you can definitely talk about your products, you can talk about different things that your company is doing. Think of it just as a page within a social platform. Don't think of it as a Shopify store because you can never really take payment from customers. I'll talk about how you can actually do that at the end, but it's way more complicated than setting up a WeChat service account. So, just remember that. You are setting up a WeChat service account here and you as a foreign company can do that all day long. It's more like your home base within WeChat. It represents your brand publicly, it collects followers, it hosts your menu and links, and it connects your storefront and potentially payment system, but you won't be able to connect that part. But, you can link to your Shopify page or other storefront. The actual selling is going to happen somewhere else, and we'll talk about that also in a minute. All right, let's talk about how you actually register. So, the first thing you need to do is you need to go to the WeChat official accounts platform and select register now on the upper right-hand side of the screen. On the next page, it's going to ask you to choose an account type. You're going to see four of them listed: official accounts, mini programs, service account, and WeChat work. You'll want to click on service account because again, it's the only account type that's supported for foreign sellers. Once you're done, you'll have to provide some basic information. The first thing that they'll ask for is your email address. No problem, I'm sure you have that. This will be used as your login ID, and they're going to send you a verification code to your inbox. So, just type in your email, click send code, and verify that you're human by solving an easy puzzle. Then, go into your inbox, grab your WeChat verification code, and paste that code into the text box below. All right, you've done that before. The next thing you'll need to do

### Segment 2 (05:00 - 10:00) [5:00]

is create a password. I like to keep LastPass active when doing this process. I know LastPass isn't great. I've been using them forever. Regardless, though, LastPass lets me remember what password I'm going to use for what platform. Scroll down, confirm your password, and then tick the box next to Waisheung's account admin platform terms of service. Now, click on register, and it's going to take you to the next page. Here, you'll be asked to select your registration location. So, click on this drop-down menu and scroll down to where you can find your country. We're registered in Canada, eh, so I'm going to go ahead and click that. Then, click confirm. Next, it's going to ask you to confirm your account type. We're going to click service account, and you'll see that this box are functions that you can do with your account. Review those, and once you're done, scroll down and click on select and continue. And that's going to bring you from here to the information registration section. So, make sure that all of your documents are available and updated before finalizing this step. Otherwise, you risk making a mistake and getting rejected. No one likes to be rejected. So, be extra careful about this step. Okay, so we did this registration a couple of weeks ago. We didn't record the video for that and plus we're also showing a lot of sensitive information here. So, I'm going to hop into screenshots opposed to videos. And then you enter your entity information. This is going to be your business type, so either enterprise or sole proprietorship. If you're an LLC, you probably put enterprise. If you're a corporation, same thing. Put your business name. And now you have to enter your company registration information. And this will be found on your registration certificate. It could be on an LLC document, your corporate document, going to have some business registration number there. I know it's scary to give this information to a Chinese company, but you're going to have to do it. So, next is your account admin information which are going to be your admin's name, mobile number, and ID number. Scroll down to creator information which is optional, but answering it could definitely help your chances of approval. For our creative field, we simply put education. And then on our creation platform, we put LinkedIn. Again, this is just how WeChat is going to verify some of the information that you put. Now, once all of that is settled, you have to upload all of your supporting documents such as screenshots of your creative platform homepage and or business certificate. Now, click continue. This will take you to the final step of the registration process. Now, the fun stuff. You get to choose your official account name. For ours, we just put eCom Crew. Makes sense, doesn't it? And then for function introduction or bio, I love Chinese nomenclature, we put eCom Crew gives you all the latest news and techniques about e-commerce. We do by the way. Remember to like and subscribe. Select your country again. And then click finish to complete your registration. That was all pretty easy, right? Well, not so fast. That's just the first chapter of an entire book's worth of steps. You still have to verify your business information. Verification can take anywhere from 2 to 3 days. It was about 2 days in our case. Also, remember these guys are working on Chinese time. So, don't get disheartened if you don't hear back from WeChat immediately. Once you do though, here's how you should go about verifying your account. Log into your WeChat account and then go There you're going to find something called WeChat verification. Click on it and then on the next page click enable. A pop-up should appear on your screen. It essentially lists everything that you need to prepare for the verification process. You'll need eight things ready before you click begin application. I know, it's a lot. First, a WeChat verification letter with your official company seal. So, a little FYI for dealing with any bureaucracy in China, China uses something called company seals. Most companies do not have a company seal. Instead, what they basically want is your company letterhead. That just basically means a header with your logo in it. Second, you'll need a letter of authorization for operation, which is also stamped with your seal or in this case with your letterhead. There is a template available somewhere in this registration process, but it's basically just document saying that yeah, your company is going to operate this WeChat account. You're going to write this document yourself. And third, you're going to need your qualification documents. That's something like your certificate of incorporation or your business license. And fourth, you're going to need your admin's mobile phone bill from the last 3 months. So, whoever you designated as the main admin for your account, get their mobile phone bill. I know, this is a lot of work. And fifth, you're going to need the front and the back of your admin's ID card, which is probably easiest as a passport. Again, that admin is probably going to be you. So, you're going to need to take a photo of your passport. And six, if your account name contains a trademark, let's say Nike, you're going to need to upload your trademark documents. And seven, a verification payment method, either your Weixin Pay or more than likely than not, a bank card, aka credit card. Like I mentioned, you're going to have to pay WeChat about 100 bucks. Now, you should probably get all this information together beforehand because

the application annoyingly times out and you might have to start over. Once everything is uploaded, click submit and pay the verification fee, which runs about 99 US dollars. After that, you're going to wait one to three weeks for WeChat to approve you. Expect to get some emails from them along the way. We had about two or three verification emails from a real person asking us a couple of follow-up questions. Now, one important warning here, do not use a personal WeChat account for business operations. Foreign personal accounts get restricted constantly and you won't be able to scale anything through them. Now, remember what I said about the part about most foreign sellers getting something wrong? Well, here it is. You can't build your own store on WeChat. Tencent doesn't let overseas company directly run selling features like in-app stores, mini programs, or checkout. So, if you do want to actually sell things, then you need to do something different. You would partner with a third-party platform that's already approved to operate inside of WeChat. They basically publish the store on your behalf and they handle the WeChat Pay connection. They host the storefront infrastructure and they keep you inside the rules so you don't get shut down. Or you can just use your WeChat page as a bit of a display room without ever actually selling things. But, if you partner with somebody, you still own your products, you control the pricing, and your brand. They just handle the parts you legally can't touch as a foreign company. So, having a presence on WeChat as a foreign business is absolutely possible. But actually take money from consumers, that's a whole different story. But that's okay because WeChat can be a display room for your products and people in China can find your products in other platforms like even Amazon. And if you have brick-and-mortar presence in China, way to go and your WeChat page can be a great way to market your products even if they can't buy directly from WeChat. So hopefully that will get you set up with WeChat within a few minutes. The whole process is a bit cumbersome, but it does work. I promise you. Again, just be patient because WeChat will take its slow time approving your account, but within either one to three weeks, you should get approved and up and running. So if you sell across borders, hit subscribe to eCom Crew and until the next one, happy selling.
