So, you're convinced that your metabolism has slowed down after 40, but has it really? My name is Dr. Jonathan Scheffler, longevity medicine expert, and I help people fix metabolic dysfunction for good. In a study of over 6,400 people, found that metabolic rate actually stays relatively stable between the ages of 20 and 60. There are really two things we need to talk about. Number one, muscle loss. And number two, something we call NEAT. Because muscle is indeed the most powerful tool we have for anti-aging effects. Starting in people's 30s, physically inactive people can lose upwards of five, even 8% of their muscle mass per decade. Muscle is an incredibly metabolically expensive tissue because it controls, it regulates blood sugar, and it consumes calories while even at rest. When it disappears quietly over the years, your body's ability to use energy inefficiently goes right along with that. And this is the single biggest lever you can actually control. Now, second is something called NEAT, non-exercise activity thermogenesis. A fancy way of saying that movement is indeed medicine. So, this includes things like walking, standing, going upstairs, moving around the house, even fidgeting. In fact, research shows that NEAT can actually account for up to 2,000 extra calories burned per day. Movement is such a powerful tool because remember, active muscle contraction, not necessarily in the gym, but just in your day-to-day movement, actually turns on a secondary pathway that brings GLUT4 or glucose channels to the surface of muscle cells, take it out of the bloodstream, and regulate glucose in that fashion without even needing insulin. You want to age gracefully, more muscle, more movement.
