Work hard and you'll be noticed. That's the career advice I went by for years. It sounds right, but it's the worst career advice I ever got. Do your job well is expected. That's why you were hired. It's not what gets you promoted. You see, early in my career, I was responsible for metadata updates on our finance system. So, this is when we update the structure of the accounts and the entities. It's was very stressful for me because if I or anyone in the team made a mistake, we can change historical numbers, which you don't want to go there. So, every time we had a meeting with finance and they wanted to do some restructuring, I was in the meeting because I knew the system inside out. So, when someone said something that wasn't quite right, I corrected them. And sometimes it mattered, so I had to correct them because the change they wanted would break how the numbers were calculated. But sometimes it wasn't really necessary for me to comment. You know, maybe I just wanted to show off my knowledge and skills a bit. I could have let it pass, but I didn't. So, I would correct the person. Now, how did that person feel when they left the meeting? Did they feel good? Not really. Like, how would you feel if you're constantly corrected in a meeting? You might feel informed, but also probably a bit annoyed. Now, here's what a lot of people don't talk about when they talk about getting promotions. Everyone talks about two things: your skills and your network. But there is a third thing that matters just as much, and most technical people like myself completely ignore it. How people feel after spending time with you. How easy are you to work with? Do you make meetings shorter, more pleasant? LinkedIn gurus call it your personal brand, but what it really means is how you make people feel around you. You see, technical skills is one thing. That's just a part of it. But we've all been in a room with someone who's technically brilliant that nobody wants to work with. So yeah, know your stuff, get good at the technical stuff. But if you really want to move up, pay attention to how people feel when they leave a meeting with you. That's important and sometimes that just means knowing when to let it pass.
