## Описание

Does brain development stop after pregnancy, or does it continue for decades?

In this episode with Tom Brenna, we explore the long timeline of brain development. DHA, an omega three fatty acid, is incorporated into the brain until at least age 20 and likely into the mid twenties.

The key principle is duration and balance. Breastfeeding provides DHA during early life, but brain remodeling continues long after. Omega three and omega six fatty acids share the same metabolic pathways, meaning an imbalance can suppress how effectively they are used. This makes long term nutritional balance critical for brain health.

If you want to support brain development, you need to think beyond infancy.

Is pregnancy that one time to build the brain? Like is that a critical component versus post pregnancy into childhood? — We are putting DHA into our brain until we're about 20 years old. One of the reasons why breastfeeding is so important beyond the immune stuff, behind the bonding stuff and all that kind of thing is that kids are getting omega-3. They're getting DHA in breast milk. The brain is remodeling consistently until at least age 20 and probably out to 25. So we are doing brain development all that time. — So DHA, can you frame us up what that is? The spectrum there's omega3, omega6. — DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid. Omega3 and omega6 are special because they are processed by the same enzymes in the body. And so when there is a big imbalance between the two, you start to suppress one against the other. And that's why a balance is actually quite important.
