The real reason I moved to American Samoa. Don't tell my wife. Talofa and hello from American Samoa. I'm starting a new series which I think I'll call Palangi and Pango. Let me know what you think of that title. Many of you have already seen my wife's recent video on Tik Tok and Facebook talking about our family moving to American Samoa. The real story actually began about a year prior to our move. Our home in Las Vegas bordered Sunset Park which has a 26-court pickleball facility where they host professional tournaments and have lighted courts from 6:00 a. m. to 11:00 p. m. Now, I often played pickleball there with a family from American Samoa. And when I mentioned we were going to spend Christmas on the island, she said I should reach out to her brother and his family and play pickleball. Turns out her brother was Adney Reid who the locals will recognize as the LDS Stake President at the time. Adney and a group of pickleball enthusiasts had started the Pickleball Association of American Samoa and they played 6 days a week either outdoors at Lions Park or indoors at the Department of Youth and Women's Affairs. Needless to say, I brought my paddle and I joined them to play the day I arrived and every day thereafter for the 2 weeks I was here. About a day before we were scheduled to fly out back home, my wife and I were having lunch together and she asked, "Would you ever consider moving here? " Now, don't get me wrong. Our Christmas vacation was great. We swam in the ocean, snorkeled at the reef, went fishing on a boat. We hiked to the new islands and visited the beach and restaurants at Sadie's. We drove up to Lookout Point to Aloau and to see the Christmas lights and I hit golf balls at Iliili golf course. And we had many barbecues and gatherings with family and friends. But when she asked me that question, the first thought that went through my mind was, "Indoor pickleball? " You see, at the time, there were no indoor pickleball courts in Las Vegas. So, if it was windy or rainy or 120 degrees, you couldn't play. Needless to say, my wife was surprised when I immediately said yes. And even more surprised how quickly I got the house ready for sale when we got back home. Of course, there's many great reasons to live in American Samoa which I will share along with many other adventures along the way in future episodes of Palangi and Pango. See you the next time. Fa'afetai.
