A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is one of the most interesting and fastest-growing roles in AI and modern tech companies.

In this short video, we break down:
- What a Forward Deployed Engineer does
- Skills you need to become an FDE
- Difference between FDE and Software Engineer
- AI, systems, cloud, and infrastructure knowledge required
- Learning roadmap for beginners

FDEs work closely with customers to deploy AI systems, solve real-world technical problems, integrate APIs, work with cloud infrastructure, and bridge the gap between engineering and business.

This role combines:
- Software Engineering
- AI Engineering
- DevOps & Cloud
- Infrastructure & Systems Design
- Customer-Facing Technical Work

If you are interested in AI engineering, MLOps, DevOps, cloud computing, distributed systems, customer engineering, applied AI, or modern software engineering careers, this video is for you.

### Segment 1 (00:00 - 01:00) []

Forward deployed engineer or FDE is one of the highest paid roles in tech today with companies like Google, Nvidia, OpenAI hiring aggressively. So, what exactly does a forward deployed engineer do? So, most engineers work in their companies and build products for their own users, but FDE does the opposite. They go directly into customer's environment and make things work there. So, if a large enterprise buys an AI product, FDE is usually the engineer that will help them deploy it in real world. So, things like understanding client's existing system, integrating everything together, and making sure that it runs in real production system. Everyday work for an FDE could be setting up infrastructure on AWS, writing scripts to integrate APIs, deploying AI agents, building rack pipelines or automation workflow, or maybe debugging a Kubernetes cluster. To land an FDE role, you need to have hands-on experience with technologies like Kubernetes, REST API, cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, even Python, vector databases, automation tools like NDTN, or even LLM frameworks like LangChain. If you want a complete step-by-step roadmap to become an FDE, comment below forward deployed engineer, and I might create a complete video. Subscribe.
