Walk time rant. The NBN Internet in the Norwest Business Park has been down for 6 days now since April 24th, and was supposed to be fixed today. But the latest update is now 8th May!
This impacts thousands of businesses in the business park, and Telstra mobile is on it's knees as a result as everyone scrambles for another solution. And my backup Optus 5G connection is also barely operational under the strain.
I'm uploading this from home because I only have 1Mbps upload speed at the lab.

### Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00) []

Hi. We're going to go for a wander through Norwest Well, around Norwest Business Park because well, as I tell you about in a minute, there's nothing much else to do here in Norwest Business Park at the moment. And just wanted to show you there's the new AI Well, the old IBM data center is going to be a new AI data center. Looks like they got the air con units up the top there. And sorry, we've got the trees in the way. And go through here and have a look. It's underway. I forget the company's name that's doing it, but uh there you have it. The air con units weren't there the other day. Joint And there we go. They've expanded it. The original IBM data center was just those columns that you see behind there. That's where it ended, but they've um extended it out the back end here. And uh the front side, I think. So, completely changed. The core is still the same. And they've still got this interactive thing here. Norwest augmented reality uh walk. Scan me. There you go. So, if you play along at home, you can scan that. Does it still work? I don't know. It's been there for a long time. Uh no doubt they spent a lot of my uh local tax dollars on that. And we'll go walk go around the front here to the AI data center, but I really wanted to show you the internet. Because the internet is completely out in Norwest Business Park. It is Wednesday as I record this. The internet in the business park has been out for the last uh five Oh. Uh what Now, you five days now. They're uh putting some cable in there. Check that out. And they These are the new uh power boxes that went in. They're Oh, they're trench digging now. Okay. They weren't uh trench digging before. That's interesting. But uh yeah, you can see there's new uh data center in there. They extended it out. Giant crane. And they've also extended the front side there. So, you can see that. That wasn't there before. But anyway, uh yeah, the internet's been completely down in basically all of Norwest Business Park. Local shopping center's down. All the commercial office buildings. The post office. It's all completely down. It has been completely down. There's new entry. There you go. For a new secure gate for their AI data center. But uh yeah, it's been completely down since early Friday morning. I think like 3:00 a. m. Friday morning. And it is now Wednesday. And apparently, it is the as we'll hopefully have a look up here further, they have uh one of the local council are upgrading It's like a footpath like this that goes along Norwest Boulevard. And they've ripped it all up. It's perfectly fine. They They're installing a new uh bike way kind of thing. Like all the way down Norwest Boulevard. Okay. Great, but probably didn't need upgrading. Ridden my bike down there plenty of times. Anyway, one of the uh subcontractors who were digging all that up, um it looks like they dug up some fibers or whatever. And oopsie, they can't just splice them back together. They needed a special I think a horizontal drill or something and uh the news is that they couldn't not get that drill until today. So, and they couldn't do a temporary workaround using like above ground cables or whatever because of occupational health and safety, OH& S. Um you know, kind of someone tripping on the cable that's taken out the entire business park for 5 days now. And I don't suspect it'll get fixed today either as they as they're planning, but uh anyway, yeah, it's nuts. So, I had to buy Oh, truck, noisy. So, as you've seen on my uh second channel and on X, I'm updating daily on X if I can, um I had to buy a uh 5G uh like a SIM um LTE uh dongle thing and an Optus SIM card because this whole park's down. Um Telstra is down as well. I used to get Telstra reception in my lab, but I don't anymore. I've got nothing at all. And everyone's complaining that

### Segment 2 (05:00 - 10:00) [5:00]

basically Telstra's down in the park. And uh yeah, um Optus, word was Optus was the only thing that works. So, I went and got an Optus SIM and I'm getting some reception in the lab, but I'm getting no upload speed. I'm getting like 1 megabit per second or 1/2 a megabit per second upload speed. Downloads are okay. It was good the other day, but uh today is just awful. It like just stops and starts. It's uh Schrödinger's internet connection. Um it's either dead or alive depending on uh when you open your browser. So, anyway, so here's where they're starting to dig all this up. And the report is some uh the roundabout, this is a roundabout here. We have roundabouts here in Australia, that's what we call them. Uh might be called something else somewhere else. Um and they've dug up something here which has caused a problem. Not sure if it's this roundabout, but uh this seems a likely culprit cuz this bike path comes all the way down here and they've dug all this up. See, it was paving like this which was perfectly fine, but now they concreted the whole thing and something's come a gutsy here. Um I don't know what has come a gutser, but uh they've dug up something. So, yeah. Yes, and maybe, I don't know, maybe it was this somewhere here, but they'd be digging this back up if it was a problem. So, maybe it's further on down. Aha, there might be some and there's some workers down here, I'm not sure. See, there's one of the uh pits which I have seen them working on. Um at night they've been uh trying to do this. I've seen people throwing their hands up in the air. There's another uh Comms pit. That's a UE Comms. Comms pit. And see, this they might I think they've re-dug this up. it up because I think this was complete the other day or quite a few days ago when I uh before all this uh problem. So, I think they've actually dug that back up just to try and troubleshoot this thing. And well, it's not good. And before 10 million people have already said it on X, just get Starlink. Just get Starlink, Dave. No, I can't get Starlink. I'm in the middle of the building with no windows. You can't run cable just up the riser to the roof willy-nilly. You can't do it. There's all sorts of uh fire sealing uh things and stuff. When I the internet installed in the dungeon, sorry. dungeon. um Um they couldn't install new cable down there, like Cat 6 or whatever, because Yeah, I reckon they dug Maybe they dug some of that up. Anyway, um So, yeah, this is the going to be the new bike path. Yay, great. Okay, it's better than it was before, but spent some serious coin on this. Anyway, where was I? The uh dungeon. Yes. Um internet there, couldn't install new Cat 6 cable, because there's all sorts of fire regulations and you have to break the seals between the levels in the risers and all sorts of things. You can do it, but it's a huge job and then it has to be recertified. So, you can't just go running Cat 5 cable throughout the building willy-nilly, especially up to the roof, which has a whole bunch of other requirements. And then, there's the AI data center. There it is. We could probably go in there and have a peek. If you're curious. It's no offense. And so, yeah, can't just install it willy-nilly. There it is. Yeah, so they've extended it. They've definitely extended it out this end there. And yeah, they've extended that out cuz I'm sure Yeah, it used to just stop there. I didn't trucks going everywhere. And uh yep, anyway, it's going to be a new AI data center. Fantastic. All right, let's go back. So, yeah, and there's And then, if one person does it, if one person installs a Starlink dish, then that basically, uh you've got to change the bylaws for the building, which means that everyone else would be able to install their own Starlink dish. And soon, it just becomes a ridiculous thing. So, no Starlink uh is not a thing. I do have a friend in building next door who has a Starlink dish cuz he's got a window. Can't open the window, but he's got a he's got it sticking out the window and the windows attenuate the signal, of course. Um and he reckons yeah, it barely works. So, there it is. There's the extension on the backside of

### Segment 3 (10:00 - 15:00) [10:00]

it. The old IBM data center wasn't big enough. Anyway, for those who don't know, the that IBM data center used to be Cathay Pacific. It was Cathay Pacific's um like global headquarters, like IT. So, if you booked a flight on Cathay Pacific back in the day, it came through this data center here. Um it was their global data center and that's what sort of kickstarted the Norwest Business Park here. And IBM eventually bought it. I guess Cathay Pacific went elsewhere and IBM bought it and it was an IBM data center for a long time. So, you know, you could rent server space. You could just go to IBM and you could rent server space and I could have rented, but it's very expensive. So, and there's another pit. They've been digging that up. They've been in there. There's another pit as well down there. So, yep. There's nobody working here today. Usually, I see them at the pits. So, it must be further down. And this is the day that they're supposed to have their big drill come in and fix everything. They've been horizontal drill or something. Not the drill. I don't know why. If somebody's just cut a cable, I don't know why they can't just splice it back together, but I don't know. Don't know the exact details, so can't say. But anyway, that is the official word from the one of the uh one of the providers. They provide lots of detail and yeah, they said yep, it was at a roundabout and it was dug up by a third-party contractor and oopsie, took out the whole business park and probably because as you've seen on my bike rides, there are buildings there's all people over there. So I'm like just on the other side of the business park there. I wonder if they've been hit too. You know, they've got these huge sky rise apartments all I can see some hard hat people going to lunch. They They've just crossed the road there. So here's another hit. And we're back to the normal footpath which was here. So maybe I should keep going. Right down the other end. I'll get back to you. I'll go down to the next roundabout up there and we'll see what's what. And we've got something here. I'm not sure what this sucker does. Someone will leave it in the underground services. Ausconnect. Is that their drilling machine? I don't know. Yes. That is I think that is the horizontal drill that they couldn't get until today. Cuz check it out. It's going right into down under here. I think everyone's gone to lunch. I think they've all gone to the gone to the shopping center for lunch, but I believe that is the big ass horizontal drill. Ausconnect underground services. Yep. That is got it and that's got to be it. And they said they could not lease one of these. Not going to go lift the boards up, but uh Oh. Oh, they've got to hold that pole in place. Wow. Okay. Yeah, they've been doing some digging here, too. That ain't normal. That is to fix whatever the heck they screwed up. So yeah, I think that's it. Um so where it's actually busted, there's another roundabout down here. And got a back hoe, is it? And we'll go have a quick look down here, but I don't see anything further down, but I have seen them on this roundabout up here at night. So, could be something going there. No, there's nothing going on here, but I have seen them on this roundabout. You see all the white paint here? These are all like services and stuff. I saw them with one of those uh pipe ones. I said, "Yeah, yeah, they've actually laid out that there's a pipe going across there like that. " So, saw them there last night. They've had a diggy here. There you go. They've had a dig. They've got some paint here. So, yeah, they were trying their best there. But, they've been trying for 5 days now to restore this internet. And they haven't been able to. So, yeah, um Telstra does it used to work. I used to get okayish reception in my lab. Now I get nothing. Um and everyone's complaining, yeah, Telstra is it's not completely down, but it's not good. It's being bogged down as thousands of businesses are impacted here in this business park, let alone if there's any uh residential customers as well. Because everyone switched to the NBN, the national broadband network. Cuz it's the only thing here that's cost-effective. Um well, there's Starlink now, of course, you know, but uh yeah, you can't just get that willy-nilly in your business. And

### Segment 4 (15:00 - 17:00) [15:00]

there's Nextgen. No idea who Nextgen is. But uh yeah, we've got quite a lot of services in this park as I've done videos on in the past. My building has like four fibers going to it. I personally had one added myself um to the building back when I was paying 400 bucks a month for my internet connection. And yes, that was real. And then yeah, I was going through a niche little provider. Got a fiber installed in the building, but there was Optus, there was not Exetel, there was another one, Vocus I think. Something like that and their internet plans were just crazy. They were thousands of dollars a month. I'm not kidding. So it was Godsend when the national broadband network came in here, but now that everyone's on the national broadband network yeah, oopsie. When the NBN fibers go down and you come a gutter completely come a gutter like this and yeah, we're talking 5 days now. They I haven't checked the update today, but yeah, they had to get that machine I believe. They were waiting for that machine. They were trying to fix it in the meantime, but they said nope, we can't do a temporary patch around because of OH& S risk. Someone might trip on the cable cuz they have to run a cable on the footpath or something. I don't know. But yeah, that's just nuts. So anyway, yeah, I've been 5 days without internet. Last Friday, all weekend. It was a long weekend here, but I was working on the long weekend as well. And yeah, I've been without internet. So I've just got Optus at the moment. Optus 5G SIM card and I've got no upload speed. If I want to upload anything, I got to go home to upload anything. So I have to take this to upload this, I have to go home. Anyway, it's nuts. Yeah, 5 days without an internet. First time it's failed in 15 years in this business park that I've had a failed internet connection. Crazy. Anyway Oh, here you go. Headed back to the shopping center. Catch you next time.
