How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a YouTube channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.

How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 200 cow-calf pairs. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

### Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00) []

Hey, is this thing on? Hey everybody, it's Ryan. Welcome back to How Farms Work. There's an elephant in the room that needs to get talked about and I've been putting it off, just haven't really been getting around to it. But yes, the 76 has lost its front mud flap. Now, it's not a huge deal to put back on, just haven't gotten around to it. So, in case you were wondering cuz you saw it, yeah, it's not there anymore. So, what broke was the rod that supports the whole thing, which is under there. And the tractor was being backed up, which allowed the mud flap to make contact with the tire and it ripped the thing pretty much clean off. So, yeah, going to have to do a little bit of fixing to get that fixed. But in case you were wondering, that's what happened to it. Now, what we're doing today is we're going to be cleaning out the pole shed. It really shouldn't be that big of a project. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two, I would think. Maybe two or three loads. So, I sold the rest of my fat cattle this week from 2024 and now it's time to get the calves from 2025 moved up into the pole shed. And ideally what I'm going to do is move the steers up here and then keep the heifers down in the barnyard to hopefully, you know, kind of spread it out a little bit. Give a couple of the smaller calves less pressure from the larger animals or move some of those lackluster calves up into the pole shed just to kind of give them some summer free from a the mud lot, but also the larger animals or quite as many so they're not as competing quite as much. So, not going to be a huge project today, but this is what we got going on. The coal cows that I brought up here made a mess out of the feeder and I kept trying to close the feeder down, but as you can see over by the linebacker, they wasted a lot of corn. So, I lowered that down. Once the calves are in here, we'll see if I need to open it back up. I'm not really trying to push a lot of grain to the calves right now. They're in the growing phase. We're trying to get their frames built out before we fatten them. So, ideally, I'm going to get them separate and then I can work them separately too because the heifers need to get run through the chute yet and get their bangs vaccinations and that's important for replacement heifers that are going to get bred. So, let's fire up the 76, go get the JCB and start cleaning this lot up. —

### Segment 2 (05:00 - 07:00) [5:00]

— I got the pole shed cleaned out. I'm going to actually let it sit for a little bit just to try to dry out the concrete a little bit before I let them in. Hopefully let some of the bugs or whatever else might be in here, disease, die out a little bit. But I didn't get too detailed cuz well, a lot of this stuff is still froze up yet, even though it was warm today. I had to kind of ride that fine line between the field being too wet and the manure being too hard to run through the spreader and to chip away. So, yeah, but that's pretty much it for this video. We're going to get the calves moved in here eventually. Um, depends on the weather too if, you know, they're calling for rain here later tonight. So, probably by tomorrow I could see letting them in. But um, they're all good to go. So, anyway, spreader's running good. No issues there, but yeah, maybe I'll comment on that in another video. But anyway, that pretty much wraps up this video, guys. Thanks for watching. Be sure to check out all of our other videos and I'll see you next time.
