How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a YouTube channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.

How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 200 cow-calf pairs. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Hey, is this thing on? Hey everybody, it's Ryan. Welcome back to How Farms Work. It has been a long couple months since I have posted any videos as some of you may have noticed. And there's actually many reasons behind that. Probably the biggest reason is the fact that Hannah and I have welcomed our first son into the family and being new parents, we are just kind of taking things slow and spending time with our first child. So This where I've been has mostly just been like I said taking things easy working on other projects on the side. That's probably the biggest reason I haven't been posting. The second largest reason is because I have been taking a lot of time to learn. One of my things that I've always said is that if you're talking, you aren't learning and I've been doing a lot of talking over the last 10 years which has not left me with the energy to do any side projects, take on anything extra around the farm to try to make life a few little easier or do a better job. And I like to think that I can keep up with that and make videos, but unfortunately for me it's just not true. I don't know what my posting schedule looks like going forward. I do want to get back into posting somewhat. However, for the time being I can't really guarantee make any guarantees or promises or anything like that. I'm excited to share this video and another video coming up here. I wasn't going to make anything on it. I don't I wasn't obligated to. I was just excited to talk about it because this is one of those things that you know, I've always made videos on. So let's talk about some of my summer projects. I'll very briefly touch on them. I say very briefly, but I'll probably go on and rant. One of the big things I have been playing around with is remote automation. So I'm actually a dealer for security cameras and I have installed quite a few security systems. The reason I got into it was because of YouTube actually because we're such a high profile farm. We had things happen. We are still having things go on and one of the things that I wanted to do is kind of you know, make sure that we're couple covering all our bases. That's what got me started with this and it's actually been really fun. I really enjoy doing stuff with the cameras. I've been playing around with remote automation to try to make our lives easier and maybe do a better job in the process. So very briefly, I'm going to touch base on what I got in front of me. The first project that I took on after I quit posting was this light pole. So last year I installed lights on the end of the barns. That was very rudimentary the how that's set up is. Uses different switches. I have a new box up there and I'm going to try to find a picture that best describes what the inside of that box looks like, but what this box up here does is it helps control anything that I want to automate remotely and it's is powered over by the water. Basically anything that I can think of that any new projects I want to do, this is going to be home base for that running electricity to. So first thing I did was installed some lights up there at the top and those are four very high powered lights to give me more light since I have spent a lot of time working in the dark out here both in the winter and in the summer. I got sick of working in the dark. I'm like, you know what? I'm going to do something, you know, go way over the top and you've probably maybe perhaps seen me post pictures of what it looks like out here at night which [snorts] it's so much better than what I had. But one of the things that I have with that is that it's all remote automated. So I can control it from my phone. I can set schedules so the lights aren't on all the time. I can set them to stay on for so long. I'm not going to touch on that in this video how I made it happen, but it's very convenient cuz all I need is my phone to turn it on. The reason that's so much better than having a is because I use them so much more. If I'm in the skid loader and I come down here to feed, I got to walk all the way over to the pole to switch it on as compared to just pulling out my phone and I can actually just tell my phone without even opening it, hey, turn these lights on and it does it. So that's fantastic. Really helps me just kind of not break my rhythm when I am working. So The other thing you may notice is that there's actually a couple bins down here. So I've got a smaller feed bin as well as a bigger one back there and those bins are

for different uses. They're This isn't where I had it originally intended on putting them up. I had wanted to Well, I'm going to move them eventually, but in the meantime I've been playing with the remote automation to try to make sure that what I wanted to do would work and it works. So I can control the augers on these bins with my phone. I can set them to run for so many seconds and what I have set up over there, I will walk over and show you guys this cuz I just set this up and it works really slick. Kind of proud of it. And so far it's working flawlessly. So again, small feed bin just holding corn. Nothing special really. This one over here is also holding corn, but it dumps out into this feed line that I had installed last winter. And I intend to stabilize this, scoop it out and get a firm base in there. That's one of the things that I was going to do before we had this early snow, but since we got the snow, it's allowed me more time to work on this. So pretty straightforward honestly. I went and got some duct work and made it dump out so that I could set it on a schedule. The whole idea behind this is so that it's remotely automated so that it runs more frequently, but puts out less corn so that hopefully it gives more cattle a chance to a chance at the corn. I'm trying to help supplement them through the winter especially, diversify their feed, just to kind of give them a little bit of extra energy. Another reason this would be beneficial is because it allows me to put out more corn depending on how many cattle I have. So I can adjust it to help bridge the gap between feedings. And again, this is just kind of a play test. It doesn't allow a lot of cattle to eat out of it at one time, but that leads us into our next video which I'm going to talk about which if you look up by the machine shed, you might have seen it in the background up there or seen it on Snapchat. We actually have a demo TMR up there that I'm going to be mixing feed in our next video. So be sure to tune back in. I wanted to put this all in one video, but turned out turns out it got to be too long. So I figured I'd just touch base on where I've been for the last few months. Mostly just learning and spending time with my son, enjoying life and it's time to come back into the limelight I guess just to really just take you guys along. I really you know, enjoy making videos. It's just I haven't had the time to make them and I've tried pulling the camera out. I've been [snorts] making videos, but they're not up to my standard and I have a really hard time posting a video that I'm not really happy with. So I could have done a better job at talking about where I've been, but man, there I just couldn't do it. I couldn't pick the camera up and talk about it. So I've been posting on Snapchat at least every now and then to try to keep some kind of updates going. This has allowed me to work on a lot of these side projects that I've been thinking about doing and I've learned a lot. So it's been very important for me to take a break from posting videos. Otherwise, I mean, yeah, we've just kind of been riding the wave since harvest stopped. Harvest was pretty good. I didn't make any videos during harvest. Again, I tried. Just weren't really up to my standards. So not going to post them and hopefully pick up here and I can't guarantee what my posting schedule is going to look like, but this is one of those things that I really wanted to share with you guys and be sure to check it out cuz TMRs are new to us and I could definitely see one of these fitting into our operation. So wait for this video to come out. Be sure to check back in. Anyway, with that, thanks for watching this video guys. I'll see you next time.
