Hyundai’s electric vehicle sales are absolutely exploding in the US, proving the EV transition is far from over! In the latest May 2026 sales report, Hyundai smashed previous records as the wildly popular Ioniq 5 saw a massive 28% increase in year-over-year sales, cementing its place as one of America's top-selling electric vehicles. Even more shockingly, the brand new three-row Ioniq 9 experienced a massive 279% sales surge! In this video, we break down the latest incredible sales figures, how Hyundai is managing to completely defy the broader market slowdown despite the loss of federal tax credits, and why their aggressive pricing, ultra-fast charging, and new US production strategy are completely dominating the competition.

The May 2026 delivery numbers guys are officially in and Hyundai or Hyundai is putting on a bit of a clinic when it comes to global EV sales. From huge percentage gains on their newest models to record-breaking volume on their established ones, the sales data is actually pretty surprising. Welcome back to the channel. I'm Sam Evans. Let's break down what's actually happening here with Hyundai. Cuz you know, you wouldn't think that this South Korean automaker would be you one of the brands that's rising so quickly this year, but they are. Let's start with the US market. Hyundai, or Hyundai, as they say in the United States, just set an all-time sales record for the Ioni 5, moving more than 5,000 units in May alone. an all-time sales record for the Ionic 5, which is surprising because this is a car that's been around for quite a few years now. That is a 28% increase compared to May of last year when $75,000 subsidies were on the table. But the real standout in the data is the three row Ionic 9. So sales for this large family SUV surged by 280% month over month, moving 1,145 units in May. Year to date, they've sold more than 4,000 in the States alone, which doesn't sound like much, but for a vehicle that's in the premium price sector, that's actually quite a lot of deliveries. The driver here is actually pretty clear. It's engineering maturity and manufacturing scale. By pricing the base Ioni 5 SC at around $35,000 US, Hyundai is undercutting a huge portion of the market while offering their 800vt eGMP architecture which is you know better tech than a lot of their rivals. So, while a lot of the competing options are sitting at 400 volt and to be honest having some uh issues in terms of reliability as well, Hyundai is constantly offering consistently offering 10 to 80% charging in under 20 minutes at a price point that is similar. Now that the Metaplan facility in Georgia is fully localized and pumping these vehicles out on US soil, the friction in terms of logistics is gone and the volume is really reflecting that. On the Electric Viking website, I'll put a link in the description below. We have more articles about electric cars and battery technology than any other website that I'm aware of in the world. So, check that out. link is in the description and there you'll find our videos and analysis and articles about everything going on in the EV world. So, let's look at what's happening in Australia. We already looked at the US. Let's move to Australia. We're seeing an equally aggressive amount of sales and pricing here. For May 2026, EVs hit a new milestone, making up 20% of all vehicle sales in Australia for the first time in history. Hyundai Australia or Hyundai has finally managed to unlock supply constraints that held them back last year. EV sales for them have increased 158%. 158% in an entire quarter. The results speak for themselves. Orders for the updated Kona EV have increased 298%. Onic 5 volume is up 187%. And Hyundai cleared more than 7,000 total vehicle sales across all drivetrains in Australia last month, meaning they were the fourth bestselling brand in the country. The interesting comparison here is the Japanese car brands. Toyota sales down 30%, Nissan was down about 30%, Mitsubishi similar, Mazda similar. Whereas because Hyundai have quite a few EVs on sale, when EV sales surge, they actually can be part of that. Whereas a lot of these Japanese brands, not all of them, but a lot of them just don't have many EV options. So then when sales surge in that area and sales go down in diesel and petrol, they're kind of lost going, "Oh, what are we doing? What are we going to do now? " So what makes Hyundai's trajectory unique right now is how they are structuring their tiers. They aren't relying on a single silver bullet. They're kind of attacking the marketplace at multiple price points simultaneously by scaling up the entry- level Conor Electric alongside their premium 800 volt platforms. They're kind of intercepting buyers who want efficiency but have completely different budget requirements. And now I mean they also have their Chinese EV with that new Elixio which is able to kind of bring that price down for that midsize electric SUV as well. The May data shows a very clear trend here, guys, which is that EB sales um for Hyundai are up significantly in both Australia and in the United States, but particularly these numbers for the United States are really impressive considering EV sales have been struggling there. But Hyundai EV sales, well, they haven't. I mean, Ionic 5 numbers increasing by having their best month ever, even though this car has
