This country Just Banned Petrol and Diesel Cars — And It's A Genius Move

This country has taken one of the boldest steps in automotive history by banning new petrol and diesel cars, accelerating the shift toward electric mobility and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. The move is already drawing global attention as a potential model for cleaner transportation, lower operating costs, and improved energy security.

After filming this video, I realized I was wrong on one thing. Lao is not the first country in the world to ban the sale of internal combustion new cars in the country. Ethiopia actually did this all the way back in 2024, but this is an absolute genius move that is going to save this little country billions of dollars. Lao or as some people call it Laos but yeah it's called Lao just made the well a big move here. This is the first country in the world to basically say no more internal combustion vehicles and nobody's talking about this which is kind of surprising. This landlocked Southeast Asian nation has suspended the import of all petrol and diesel powered vehicles effective the 1st of June. That ban is appears to be permanent. So, who would have thought that this tiny little country in Southeast Asia, which to be honest is actually a very poor country, would be the first country in the world to end the sales of internal combustion vehicles. What a fantastic move this is, guys. I traveled to Lao about 15 years ago, just thinking 15 16 years ago. And when I was riding my bicycle around the world and a lot of people who go to Lao, I'd say at least 95% of them just go to the tourist places, it's really not indicative of what the country is really like. Uh if you go to the non-ourist areas, you just ride through the mountains, you go around that, those sort of areas, you'll see the people are actually very poor. Not everyone, but most people. And the truth is that nutrition's not great in a lot of these areas as well. The country is amazingly beautiful though. And I think that this decision to be the first country in the world to cancel the sales or to block the sales of internal combustion vehicles is a big positive. This came from a notice actually issued by the prime minister's office on the 12th of May. So it happened a couple of weeks ago. And the goals are simple. accelerate the shift to electric cars, cut dependence on imported fossil fuels, and tighten control over the automotive sector. On the Electric Viking website, I'll put a link in the description below. We have more articles about electric cars and battery technology than any other website that I'm aware of in the world. So, check that out. Link is in the description. And there you'll find our videos and analysis and articles about everything going on in the EV world. There are exemptions. Public transport vehicles, even though they're trying to go electric there as well, construction machinery, trucks tied to specific production and development projects, and specialized professional vehicles can still come in. But the ordinary market, diesel, petrol, the door is now closed and it doesn't need to be open. There's really no reason to have that door open. I wonder if you know some of these legacy manufacturers particularly companies like Toyota who you know less than 1% of their car sales worldwide are electric that's their big market. Southeast Asia is a huge market for companies like Toyota. I wonder if they're kind of looking at it and thinking oh no if this happens in other countries if this snowballs we are in big trouble. I mean if you look at the Australian market EV I mean EV sales rising enormously up more than 100% last month and what happens in that same month right the same month Toyota sales fall by more than 30%. So you really what happens is in any market where EV sales are rising fast Toyota sales are going down to understand why a country of just 7. 6 6 million people would do something this aggressive. You got to look at energy. Lao is known as the battery of Southeast Asia. It's rich in hydro power and actually exports electricity to its neighbors. But here's the catch. It imports more than 97% of its petroleum products, almost all of it from Thailand. That makes it dangerously exposed. And that exposure became very real this year. In late February, turmoil around the straight of Hormuz led Thailand to briefly suspend fuel exports. Within hours, panic buying emptied petrol stations, gas stations across the capital, VNTN. Thailand later granted a 12 million L shipment to ease the crisis. But the damage was done and the message was very clear. Relying on imported fuel is a national vulnerability which could lead to disaster. And why do it if you don't have to? Switching to electric vehicles powered up by domestic hydropowered electricity becomes a matter of energy security. So

what's actually in this policy? Beyond the import ban, the government is building a standardized pricing framework for EVs that covers Xactory prices, transport costs, taxes, duties, and even approved profit margins for each category. The point is to stop sellers gouging buyers as demand surges. Companies caught manipulating prices face fines and even penalties. There are carrots, too, which makes sense. Fully electric vehicles priced under $50,000, which is going to be at least 95% of the market, will be exempt from taxes. That's a really good move. Higher price EVs and other alternative energy vehicles remain under review. But let's be honest, not many people in Lao are buying vehicles for more than $50,000. I mean, China is their neighbor. You don't need to. The government is also pushing to expand charging infrastructure with private investment and it wants vehicle transactions routed through formal banking channels to improve transparency and protect its foreign currency reserves. So this builds on emergency measures from earlier in the year. Lao had already cut registration and service fees for EVs by 30%. while raising those same fees for fuelpowered cars by 30%. Transport companies have been told electric vehicles must make up at least 10% of their fleets by the end of this year. Government agencies have been ordered to stop buying fuelpowered vehicles unless absolutely critical. And in April, Lao actually signed an agreement with 27 public and private partners covering vehicle supply, charging infrastructure, transport operations, and financing, including plans for battery swapping stat stations and a centralized digital platform to manage charging. Guys, put these two things together. This is insane, right? First country in the world that's basically banning internal combustion. Brilliant move. when you know you have all this extra energy. You're exporting it all this electricity. 97% of your country is running on hydro power. So you're moving away from importing all this fuel to using your own energy. That's just brilliant. Absolutely smart. Then the second move is absolutely legendary as well. They are having a centralized digital platform to manage charging. There is no country in the world that's done this. None. The LAO is the first country in the world to have a centralized digital platform to manage charging and that is absolutely brilliant. I have, I think, 10 apps on my phone for all the different charging networks. That's just Australia. I mean, if you're traveling around the world, you could have more than 20 apps on your phone. There is every country has multiple apps, multiple ways of paying. You got to pay this way, that way. It often doesn't work. This is a really smart move to centralize it, have it on one platform, make it as simple as possible. Who fills this gap? Well, almost certainly Chinese automakers going to fill the market across Southeast Asia. Brands like BYD, Sik, Nita, they already dominate electric vehicle sales with BD's 3 among the bestselling EVs in that region. Lao with its deep economic ties to China is a natural extension of that. Chinese capital financed much of the country's hydro power, so the pieces line up pretty well. Chinese cars charged by hydro that Chinese money helped build. All sounds kind of, you know, maybe a bit too Chinese, but who cares? This is a smart solution, and I think it's the right decision to make. The long-term goal is for electric vehicles to make up more than 30% of all vehicles on the road by 2030. So, we're looking at four years. And in that 4-year period, the government is hoping that all that vehicle fleet, which is almost all internal combustion powered, about 98% of it, moves from 98% to around 70%. So 30% electric. That's ambitious for a developing economy, but it is absolutely possible. What makes La fascinating though is the logic. This isn't primarily about climate virtue. In fact, that has nothing to do with their decisions whatsoever. It's a cold strategic calculation. A country that makes its own clean electricity but imports basically all of its fuels has every incentive in the world to go electric as fast as possible. What does that say about Australia? What does that tell you about many countries in the world who will be by 2030 making almost all of their own electricity and who import fuel from America, from the Middle East, from other countries? What are they going to do? see what Lao is doing and go, "Hang on a minute. This has got to fix

our terms of trade almost instantly. " While larger nations debate timelines and quietly walk back on their commitments, Tiny Laauo just slammed the door on combustion imports essentially overnight. It may be one of the clearest real world examples yet of the electric vehicle as a tool of national survival. And this will not be the first country. Many other countries are going to look be looking at Lao saying, "Hang on a minute. Why aren't we doing that? Thinking about getting solar, a home battery or an EV charger?
