### Segment 1 (00:00 - 02:00) []

A French court has just found Airbus and Air France guilty of corporate manslaughter regarding the crash of Air France flight 447. This happened to an Airbus A330, which plunged into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009 after its pitot probes got clogged up with ice, causing its pilots to become confused and ultimately stall the aircraft. Now, the accident caused the loss of all 228 passengers and crew on board, and out of everyone, 72 were French, 58 Brazilian, with a total of 33 different nationalities. The decision to convict came from the Paris Appeals Court, while the trial itself took place last fall and lasted about 8 weeks. And before that, in 2023, a lower French court had found in favor of Air France and Airbus. Now, there is a lot more to tell you about how this happened, which you can see in my video about it, but before the accident, there had been several cases of problems with these particular pitot tubes in other Airbus aircraft, obviously without the same horrible consequences. After the accident, Airbus and Air France quickly blamed the pilots for what had happened, but the families of the victims instead accused Airbus and Air France for the aircraft's faulty equipment, and also for not providing adequate upset training for the pilots, especially at high altitude. Now, Air France had been in the process of replacing these pitot tubes in its Airbus A330 and 340 fleet when the accident happened, but neither Air France nor Airbus believed that the problems were urgent enough to actually ground the aircraft. So, this new decision is a vindication for the families who have been pursuing this case for many, many years. But, the financial penalties for Air France and Airbus will be very low, only 225,000 euros, or just under 262,000 dollars, which is the maximum fine for corporate manslaughter under French law. Now, that is equal to only a few minutes of revenue for either of these companies, according to Reuters. But, even so, a conviction like this is obviously damaging for both companies' reputations. So, Airbus have announced that they plan to appeal, which could prolong this ordeal even further. Now, check out my long-form documentary about this accident if you want to know the full story of what happened on that night. It should be connected or linked to somewhere around here. And don't forget to subscribe.
