Tableau is now an Agentic Analytics Platform. That was Mark Recher's favorite announcement from the #TC26 keynote, and I spoke with him to understand what it actually means. #sponsored

We covered:

⎇The Tableau MCP server on Cloud is being downloaded 10x more than the next analytics tool.

⎇Tableau Desktop is back with a freemium tier, and 115k people signed up in 60 days. All the latest innovation (conversational analytics, MCP) is going into Desktop, not just Cloud.

⎇Throwing a dataset into an LLM gives you fast answers and inaccurate ones, because the model has no business context, no metric definitions, no semantic layer. MCPing Tableau means your trusted knowledge travels with you into Claude, ChatGPT, Slack, Teams, or Salesforce.

⎇Traditional data analysts are becoming agentic architects, knowledge architects, and decisions architects.

Do you love this wind? This is great. — It's amazing. It's sunny, it's windy, but I've been inside of a conference center all day, so this is actually nice. Yeah, so — There's also a falcon over there. And birds everywhere. — Yes. Hello everybody. This is Kate Strachnyi from Dedicated. We're in San Diego at the Tableau Conference. You can see the sign right here. And I'm here with Mark Rucker, who's the general manager of Tableau. Mark, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today. Fantastic keynote, so many announcements, so much excitement. So, what's your favorite announcement? Let's start with that. — My favorite announcement is us putting these sunglasses on cuz it's pretty bright out. I love that. Let's do it. Okay. I think my favorite announcement from the keynote is that Tableau is now an agentic analytics platform, and that's across every product inside of our portfolio. So, it's not just Tableau Next, it's in Tableau Cloud, it's in Tableau Server, and really importantly, it's in Tableau Desktop, where we built this incredible DataFam community of over 5 million members, and that's where almost all of them got started. Did you hear the crowd cheering when you said that? It was like every The crowd went wild. — They loved hearing that. I had talked to you in the last 55 days a ton of different community members about one, how their role's evolving, but two, bringing the latest innovation back to Desktop. And we actually did that about 2 months ago. We returned on Tableau Freemium in Desktop, and we've gotten 115,000 sign-ups in 60 days. — That's wild. — You know, some of the announcements that stuck with me is the Tableau Open MCP server, right? Because now you no longer have to build a dashboard, send people to your dashboard. You can engage with the underlying data directly in those um agentic AI chatbot platforms. That That's really cool. — Yeah, so I'll throw a couple stats at you. Um Tableau MCP wise on Cloud is actually downloaded 10 times more than the next analytics tool. And so, when we think about headless analytics and our investment in MCP, it's really aligned to like the founding values of Tableau, which is democratizing the access to data. And this is a Gen-AI era. Go watch the keynote, by the way. The second demo, what you'll see is a community member goes into Claude, does some deep data modeling, some deep dashboard development, and then brings that back into his trusted knowledge layer in Tableau. So, we want to make sure that our data fam, that our customers have access to bring their trusted knowledge anywhere. Not just in Claude, ChatGPT, but Slack and Microsoft Teams, and of course Salesforce. Of course. And you know, some of those demos were very impressive. And yes, go watch the keynote. I'm going to add a link in the post where we saw a handwritten sketch and someone took a picture of that sketch and uploaded it and created, you know, Claude was able to create a graphic and add that to the Tableau dashboard. A lot has changed since I used Tableau back in 2014. — up. Did you know about Tableau Desktop Premium? Tell us about it. How do we How do people get it? — signed up. Back in the day, we used to Yes, thank you. We used to have to use Tableau Public. And I remember, if I wanted to do anything creative outside of work, I would use Tableau Public. I had a whole public profile, but there was some data that I simply did not want to put out there. Yeah. And I still wanted to play with Tableau. So, I think it's such a great entry point to data visualization and dashboarding and congratulations on launching that. — Yeah, thank you. I couldn't agree more. So, I would encourage everyone to actually go download Tableau Desktop and to see the power that you have there. We're bringing all the latest innovation there as well. So, conversational analytics is going to be in Tableau Desktop. Your ability to MCP with whatever tools you would like is also in Tableau Desktop. And like that is a large part of what built this incredible data fam globally is access to the tool and access to be able to democratize data and get curious and play with it. And so, I know in a way, it's Tableau sort of like coming back to its roots. And I think that's really important as we enter the agentic era, where there's so much like capability and potential to like be curious and test the boundaries of what we can do with data and analytics. And we want to make sure that Tableau is the leading provider of that inside the market. — So, there's some hesitations around governance and security and you know, can I actually plug my data in to cloud? How do you know, ease their minds? — So, what we found actually is you can go throw a data set into an LLM. Um not LLM specific, but what you'll find is you'll actually get inaccuracies back. Because they don't have context on your business. They don't understand metric definitions. You don't have a semantic model. All of that. It's also not secure. And so, by MCPing Tableau, you're taking your trusted knowledge, where think about Tableau dashboard today. If you're looking at it, you know it's accurate because that's how you're running your business. And the ability to go take it MCP into these LLM tools allows you to do deep data exploration. It coding and then

It allows you to do deep coding and then bring those assets back into your trusted knowledge platform and your agentic analytics platform. So, I think it has been a fantastic investment from us and it's one of the things our community is most interested in doing right now. Right. I completely agree. And I think you have the data lineage and explanation of where that answer's coming from as well, right? Yes. I think well, when you watch the keynote, you'll see one last thing, which is our analyst command center. So, it's basically the future vision, which we'll have out later this year, where an analyst can manage everything that they would need to inside of a data and analytics strategy. Data prep, data pipelines, semantics, the knowledge layer, as well as insights and actions and manage agent performance and see how those agents are performing because they may not be using the right metrics. They may not have the right data pipeline feeds, and you can also do that across your MCP universe. And so, this is going to be an entirely new way for data analysts and data professionals to manage their entire data and analytics strategy for their company. I wanted to get your thoughts on how is this a Gentic analytics platform helping bridge that data literacy gap and — Yeah. I think it I think it's a wonderful question, and I said this in the keynote, but I don't think there's ever been a more interesting or exciting time to be in data and analytics. Let me tell you why. One is access. One is the power of technology that we have. So, I think you already see it outside in the market, and I think you could see it in the response to uh Tableau Desktop, that people want to play with data. They want to understand it. They want to use the power of AI to become more data literate. So, from an action perspective, you should all go download Tableau Desktop. But, what I would say is you're also seeing these folks that their roles are transitioning. We talked about it in the keynote from like a traditional data analyst to an agentic architect, to a knowledge architect, to a decisions architect, because that's how companies are actually going to run in 2026 and into the future. We can even see it with what we're doing at Salesforce, which is we're taking conversational analytics not in a dashboard. We have it there, obviously, but we're bringing it right into Slackbot, because that's where our 14,000 sellers are actually working. So, they can have a conversation with their business, and they can take action with Slackbot right there. That's the future of where all of this is headed. Very powerful. So, yes, to my audience, go ahead and get that Tableau Desktop. There's a premium model that you can explore. We'll add the links into the post, and Mark, thank you so much for your time. Thank you, Kate. I really appreciate it. Have a great TC. Bye. Cheers.
