April delivered nearly 10% annualized returns for the S&P 500, the best month since 2020, with markets hitting all-time highs despite the Fed holding rates and flagging inflation. This week brings 1,607 earnings reports. Palantir reports Monday. AMD, Shopify, and Pfizer on Tuesday. Arm, Disney, Uber, and AppLovin on Wednesday. Reserve Bank of Australia announces its rate decision Tuesday, expected to hold at 4.1%.

Jobs data dominates the back half. JOLTS on Tuesday, ADP on Wednesday, unemployment claims and nonfarm payrolls Thursday, and Friday’s unemployment rate at 4.3%. AI layoff headlines are starting to surface, and housing data drops midweek with the Case-Shiller index showing home prices declining year-over-year around 1%.

In this episode of Monday Morning Must Knows, Merlin Rothfeld breaks down current market conditions, key earnings reports, and the major economic events traders should be watching this week.

Hello everyone and welcome to Money Morning Must Knows. My name is Merlin Rothfeld and it's been an absolutely fantastic month. You know, we had March was kind of not the best looking month from performance wise. We were negative for the S& P and wow, what a difference a

month makes. April, don't do it Merlin, don't do it, don't do it. I got to do it. April was huge, huge month for April. No one knows April like I do. It was massive. Almost 10% gains for the month of April. Remember, that's an annualized rate of return is 10% for the

S& P. We got it in one month. Let's see if that will continue and the odd part is it's flying in the face of so much uncertainty. Of course, we had the Fed announcement and they were citing inflation concerns and maybe not lowering rates anymore this year. Yet, the markets goes, "Well, we don't care. We're going to keep on rocking. " And we had our Magnificent Seven, four of which were on Wednesday, one of which

### [0:57](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=57s) Earnings Calendar (1,607 Companies)

was on Thursday, and things looking just pretty decent from their numbers as well. So, let's dive into the earnings calendar. That's what starts us off. There's still a ton. 1,607 companies reporting earnings this week. Although, none of them are as heavy hitters as we saw reported last Wednesday and Thursday. We'll dive right

### [1:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=73s) Palantir on Monday

into Monday, which is one that I'm particularly interested in. It's got a pretty ugly looking chart right now. That is Palantir will be reporting on Monday with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Diamondback Energy and TSN, which is Tyson Foods. Let's see if inflation is actually hitting there. Moving on to some tech names on Tuesday, you have

### [1:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=89s) AMD, Shopify, Disney, Uber, Arm, AppLovin

AMD, Shopify, Pfizer, Anheuser-Busch or AB InBev and Duke Energy. Wednesday brings you ARM, Novo Nordisk, Disney, Uber, AppLovin. I think that's one of the best names out there. And Marriott Resorts. Thursday, you've got Shell, McDonald's, Gilead Pharmaceuticals and

### [1:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=107s) Five Central Bank Announcements Recap

Airbnb. And finally, on Friday, you have Enbridge and Sats, which is EchoStar. So, again, 1,607 companies reporting. The ones of particular interest for me this week will be Palantir on Monday, AMD because chips have been going absolutely bonkers on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, ARM is well in that chip space. So, let's take a step back just a little bit because last week we had like five central banks making announcements. Pretty much everybody stayed the same and really giving cautionary notes to global uncertainty and potential inflation, particularly here in the United States, which does not really create a lot of confidence in the equity markets. That said, we hit all-time highs yet again. Unbelievable. So, which

### [2:26](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=146s) Reserve Bank of Australia Rate Decision

central banks will be reporting? We've got one lonely little bank reporting. I said lonely little. That's not nice of me to say, but we have one central bank reporting uh rate announcement this week and that is going to be on Tuesday at 12:30 a. m. Eastern time. So, right after the stroke of midnight, the Reserve Bank of Australia will be making rate announcement and they are expected right now to stay right where they're at 4. 1%. So, no big change there. Yet, that Australian dollar has been getting a little bit stronger and stronger over the past month, stopping its well, several month decline. Last piece of data, it goes back to the

### [2:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=179s) Jobs Data Week Overview

jobs. US markets, again, if you follow this program for any amount of time, you know, it gets a bit repetitive because we're always focusing on the dual mandate issues for the Fed. Number one is full employment and number two is stable pricing or inflation. Well, the jobs data comes out this week and of course, when you have the first week of a month, we get the unemployment rate, but there's four other things here

### [3:19](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=199s) JOLTS, ADP, Claims, and Nonfarm Payrolls

that we should be paying attention to. We start a little bit earlier on in the week with our US employment data. That's the JOLTS job openings on Tuesday at 10:00 a. m. Eastern time. On Wednesday, we get the ADP employment change at 8:15 a. m. On Thursday, you get the usual unemployment claims at 8:30 and then this is the big one, the double whammy of unemployment rate and non-farm employment change. That is going to happen Friday at 8:30 a. m. Eastern time. The most important one, of course, is the unemployment rate. Right now, it's

### [3:49](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=229s) Unemployment Rate at 4.3%

sitting about 4. 3% and that's not really elevated, in my opinion, when you look back at what Ben Bernanke was talking about years ago. He said full employment is 5. 5% and we are significantly lower than that. So, at this point, nothing really be concerned about. However, it has been trickling up over the past couple of well, let's just say about a past year and a half, it's been moving slightly up. The big question I think

### [4:10](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=250s) AI Impact on Jobs and Layoff Headlines

all of us have right now is where does AI fall into this? How does AI start to impact these jobs numbers? Right now, we're not seeing much, but I have read a lot of headlines recently about companies starting to make layoffs. If you follow technology at all and I would encourage you to do so, look at claw open claw and clawed code and see what it can do for businesses. It's really somewhat frightening when you think of an AI algorithm running an entire business operation. And I don't mean just making some decisions, but making every single decision for a business and the threat that may have for jobs going forward. It could paint a pretty ugly picture. I might guess is later next year, probably in 2027, we really start to see the impacts of this, but we'll all be keeping a close eye on that

### [4:51](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=291s) Housing Data and Construction Spending

employment data. Now, moving on to other issues such as housing, we have a couple housing data points coming out this week, particularly on Tuesday with the new home sales. That's going to be at 10:00 a. m. Eastern time. And then one that I'm particularly interested in, which is construction spending. I think we've all been feeling the pinch of prices moving a little bit higher for just about everything. Will that start to curb construction spending? Remember

### [5:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=313s) Case-Shiller Home Price Index Declining

the S& P Case-Shiller Composite 20 Home Price Index has been declining and declining, showing year-over-year growth of right around 1% for homes. So, why would people want to be building or improving on their homes when they're not going up in value? This could be a piece that helps dictate the economy going forward. Again, that's going to be Thursday at 10:00 a. m.

### [5:31](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vSdX6FSbUw&t=331s) Weekly Outlook

Eastern time. So, what do we have for this week? Well, we can rejoice from what happened in April overall from performance for the S& P and broader market indexes. We do have some fairly large names in the tech space with earnings. We have a central bank. We have economic data. It's going to be a fun trading week, everybody. Hope you have a fantastic week. And remember, Monday is May the 4th. So, use the 4th and May the 4th be with you. We will see you next week. —
