Let's play a game

Hello brains! Happy new year! Want this  year to be better than last year? Same. So... Let's play a game.

2026 Bingo & How it Works

This is 2026 bingo, and it's the reason I am  wearing a Sherlock Holmes-ish outfit, which will make sense later. In fact, it will be elementary. 2026 bingo, or insert-whatever-year-it-is-here bingo is where you make a literal bingo card and  fill it out with things you want to experience, achieve, or try that year. You mark squares off  as they happen and at the end of the year you see if you got bingo meaning five in a row up, down, or  diagonally. Middle square is free. Though you could try to hit all 25 if you want to play blackout  bingo. I am not playing blackout bingo. Well -- No. Let's see how regular bingo goes. My team heard  about this from a community member in our Discord who played 2025 bingo. And we thought it was such  a cool idea, we decided to try it immediately and even make our own template for it. Actually,  templates. They're free. You can download them from the description below.

Why 2026 Bingo is good for ADHD Brains

What I love about this  for people with ADHD is that it's novel. Novelty is one way to fill in the missing "motivational  planks" for ourselves that can help us get stuff done that we would otherwise struggle to do. More  on that in this video. Actually, there are a lot of motivational planks involved here. There's  an element of challenge because you're probably putting some things on the card you haven't done  before. Personal interest, because it's your bingo card. Ideally, you're only putting things on the  card that you care about. And at least by the end of the year, it's urgent, cause once the year's over,  time's up. It's a great way to motivate the ADHD brain. Also, it's flexible enough that it's worked  for the most and least detail oriented people on our team. The most spontaneous, and the most  "routines are life do not touch. " Not many systems can claim that. It can be done socially, too,  which can help with some gentle accountability. Basically, you just hand a friend or two a blank  bingo card and say, "Want to play 2026 bingo with me? Here you go. " I did that with my partner. Yes,  my AuDHD partner, who does not like spontaneous activities thrust upon him, loved it. It's that  good. And it's just fun. It's a game. Gamification tends to work for our brains. We don't like  boring. Boring is boring. And boring is painful. Plus, for those of us who have difficulty  focusing, the act of writing down our intentions for the year can be really important because  it solidifies our intent to do these things.    That alone can help our reticular activating  system recognize opportunities to achieve them. And seeing all the cool stuff we did can help  counter negativity bias. Wait, wouldn't writing down your intentions for the year in a different  way also help your reticular activating system   more readily recognize opportunities to  achieve them and counter negativity? Yes,   but this way is more fun. It also has the serious  advantage of putting all of your goals on one page   right in front of your face, which incidentally  was what was so helpful about the One Page Miracle,   which I talked about in the very first  video on this channel 10 years ago.

Ten year celebratory interlude!!!

[Happy Birthday Music] This is exciting. So, I can check  off that box. Celebrate 10 years   of this channel. Check. Well on my way to bingo. Oh, there it is. That was good. I should finish  this video? Alright.

What are the rules?

So, what are the rules? For flexibility sake, there are no definitive  rules. Though it can help to decide on a couple of personal rules to help you narrow down what to  put on your card and to help with motivation. For example, my rules were nothing routine-based. When I've done it, it's done. And only things I'm looking forward to, nothing I would dread,  which I got from that community member. Thank you, Kira! I also tried to put a nice mix of stuff  that costs money and stuff that's cheap or free   so I could make progress on it even if I'm broke  because childcare is expensive. Kira also had the rule of nothing that takes longer than a week to  accomplish which I thought was really smart. But my partner and I decided to include a couple of  longerterm goals in the mix, too. We'll see if we regret that. I'll keep you posted. While there  are no rules other than the ones you create, here are some traps to maybe avoid.

What are some traps to avoid?

The comparison  trap. It can be helpful to see what others have done as inspiration and there are versions of  this all over the internet at this point. But yours doesn't have to look like someone else's.   It just has to make sense for you. On that note, doing it performatively and including things  you should want or things that will impress others instead of things that are meaningful to  you. Don't do that. If you want to be able to share your accomplishments on social media, you  can always share a few of them without sharing the whole card. Go ahead and write down that  cringey thing you want to do. Do iiiit. Do it. Also, focusing on outcomes rather than actions or making  your squares too vague. I actually did both of these at first when I wrote learn how to make a  killer salad. What counts as a killer salad? What if I make a hundred salads and none of them are  killer? I changed it to make five types of salads. Probably one of them will be good. Also, now I  know when I'm done and can check it off. Finally, feeling like you have to finish. Sometimes  priorities change and that's okay. Also, even not finishing any of them is good data we can use for  next time. Speaking of, one of the coolest things about this is that even making the bingo card can  be helpful. It can help you identify what sorts of things bring you a sense of purpose or joy. And not just the big sweeping goals, the little mundane things, too. So, even if you forget about  your bingo card by next week, I encourage you to make one. It's fun. It's fairly fast, and it just  might improve your year. I'm going to go host a murder mystery party. No, I'm not. I haven't  even planned it yet, but I will. And I already got my costume, which is making this year more fun  already. Come, Watson. Come. The game is afoot. Thank you to our Brain Advocates and all our  Patreon brains for supporting goofy fun videos   like this

Thank you!!!

that actually do a lot of good for  this community. It's because of you that we   get to play with props like these. Let us know  what you think about making a 2026 bingo card in the comments below. Share something you added  to yours. And if you found this video helpful, don't forget to like, subscribe, and click all  the things. It helps our channel out a lot. You might know that already, but as Sherlock  Holmes would say, there's nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact. Happy New Year,  brains, I'mma go celebrate a decade.
