Intro

how do we know if work is good or bad do we have an internal compass that guides us to be able to interpret feedback as just one point of data or do we just throw ourselves at the whim of the opinions of other people I've had plenty of really hard conversations with clients I've given feedback I've gotten feedback and I want to open up with a very personal story a real life experience many years ago we made commercials and music videos and my executive producer at that time came to me and said one time Chris I'm not sure

Personal Story: Client Feedback and Internal Compass

the team is giving it their best effort and he's saying this because we had recently pitched on a big account that we really wanted and we didn't get the work and he interpreted the feedback of not getting the account as we're not doing the best that we can that we're doing subpar work he's saying this for a number of different reasons one of the reasons is because he thinks by saying this he will trigger response from me and get me involved in the project but I have very capable creative directors who I've trained myself who I brought up the ranks and they're very capable people and to pull me in would undermine what they're trying to do and would be a blow to her self-confidence and self-esteem I knew he wanted me back in because he wanted every single person to be involved to give us the best chance and that's human to want to do that this is not just any other person off the internet this is a client who's got the keys to whether you're going to proceed with a six-figure job $200,000 $400,000 job R so there was a lot of writing on the line This is not just an ordinary opinion this is the opinion

The Conundrum of Accountability

of someone who really matters and so I had said to him I said here's what we're going to do I said you see all the work before we submit the work right he goes yes I said do you have an opinion of the work do you know if it's good or bad before you submit it because I think I know if it's good or not I say okay this is great so here's what I want you to do the next time we go after a new piece of business I want you to make sure you have ample time to check in the work to kind of get a pulse of what's going on and you tell me if the work is good or not before you show the client now he knew then that I kind of boxed him into a corner because now he would have to take responsibility for determining prior to someone else telling him that the work is good or not so you can see the conundrum here is if he later on complains that we lost the work because it wasn't good enough then he's at fault

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation

he has some accountability here and if we win the work or whatever then he also has some responsibility to say you know what I felt it was good and we took our best sh and we did bring in that project this is really critical and the thing that I want to bring up here is that many of us do not have an internal Compass or north star telling us that the work is good so we're constantly seeking the opinions of other people and therefore we put our emotional well-being our happiness our joy and our sadness in the hands of strangers or people who don't actually really care about us at all and there's no shortage opinions out there like they say everyone has an opinion and a but whole

Defining Intrinsic Motivation

I don't want to really see either so this is really critical so I want to bring out this next slide and I want to talk a little bit about intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation now these are fancy words intrinsic and extrinsic but if you just focus on the key words here of in and X internal and external so intrinsic is you're making decisions and you're doing things because it brings you personal happiness joy fulfillment because you find something to be challenging you're just doing it for you the reward comes from you versus

Defining Extrinsic Motivation

extrinsic motivation which is generally done to please other people generally because we want to receive a reward we want to get more of a reward or we're trying to avoid we want to lessen the amount of punishment so if I tell my son keep your room clean what do you think he's going to react to is it an intrix motivation that he's going to keep his room clean or is an extrinsic motivation to keep it clean what do you think Zoom people all your feature Pro people would you say why is that CIA has this

Motivation in Everyday Life

external it's coming from outside that within okay so what might he be thinking my young son here what might the reward be if he keeps his room clean a bigger allowance he gets no allowance so bigger than zero yes he gets an allowance maybe and what about the punishment no games somebody who knows something about children right no games um perhaps it's like um or I'll keep nagging you about it my tone my mood my temper will change for the worst you don't want to see that so A lot of times people are doing things because of

Balancing Both Types of Motivation

externally motivated reasons right it's almost the exact opposite of intrinsic just like the name implies sometimes he can actually be motivated by both this can exist so for example if we're working a new business I want to have pride of the work I'm doing I want to feel good that the work is at my standard and if it's so good that it actually brings in a new client that helps me to pay for the salaries and it gives me that boost that means that I'm motivated by both and that's totally okay too I only want to point this out

Outro

because it's related to this idea of feedback that the feedback that you get can wreck you if you have no internal sense of what is good and what is bad
