What is the thinnest material in the world? My name is Dr. Amy Carl. I am a researcher here at the National Graphine Institute in Manchester. The thinnest material in the world is graphine. It is a single flat sheet of carbon atoms. And you make it by peeling off layers from graphite, which is the same material that's in your pencils. Graphine is thousands of times thinner than a sheet of A4 paper. It's really, really useful because as well as being the thinnest material in the world, it also conducts electricity and heat really, really well, as well as being really strong. Graphine and other 2D materials have loads of potential applications, especially in electronics where in the future they can be used to make your phones smaller and faster. My favorite thing about working with graphine and other 2D materials is the ability to stack up individual layers like Lego bricks to create bespoke new materials and devices.
