in the movie Cast Away Tom Hanks is stranded on this island and he's struggling to get off of it so that he can be saved but he has this really big problem how does he get Beyond these massive waves that keep pushing him back in and keeping him confined to this very small island and finally he comes up with a solution he builds a sail that's going to capture the wind and help push him past the major wave that keeps pushing him back towards the island and once he's beyond that break point he's able to get out at Sea and hopefully get someone to notice him and save him in the middle of the ocean and for a very long time now I've looked at that particular storyline within that film is a great analogy for how to get out of Smallville when it comes to your YouTube channel because whether you know it or not there is a barrier around your channel and if you don't understand how to get beyond that barrier to get more views and distribution for your videos then your channel is never going to grow to the that you wanted to grow if you're watching this video for the first time my name is Cory mlan and I help content creators monetize their own Audience by creating offers and digital products and in this video I want to talk to you about how to get more views on your YouTube videos because if your videos don't get views you won't get subscribers you won't build your brand you won't have a successful business from YouTube and so many other things will never take place so I want to share with you some things that I've recently learned from YouTube that are going to help you get more views on your videos in 2025 we all know the feeling when we get that video that we upload and it's a one out of 10 and then we open the YouTube studio app and they'll typically share with us some insight as to why that video performs so well recently I uploaded my number one best performing video on day one and the video got around 4. 6 to 5,000 views on the first day and I know for larger channels that's not a lot of views on day one but for my channel it was a exceptionally well and it's definitely an outlier and when I began to look at the insights that YouTube shared with me as to why this video was getting so many views and so much watch time it actually blew my mind because I discovered that they were tracking metrics that I've never heard anyone talk about YouTube tracking at all because after you've seen what YouTube share with me you're going to find that a lot of creators are arguing that subscribers don't matter because they don't guarantee views and they don't guarantee success but the reality is that your sub subscribers play a very critical role in the success of every single video you upload now something that's very important for you to understand as we go forward with this video is that just about every single platform tracks the same metrics every platform is looking at watch time likes comments and other things that help the measure engagement because the longer they can keep you on the platform the more they're going to push that type of content and so every platform is really a game of momentum in particular what platforms like to do is send out your content to a seed audience and if it performs well with them a larger audience and they keep this up until your content begins to slow down and stop performing as well which is a sign of less interest and so forth so as much as we like to talk about the YouTube algorithm the Tik Tock algorithm the Facebook algorithm at their very core they have more in common than they do in difference just like every vehicle you see traffic has four tires I can't tell you what brand of tires there are I can't even tell you what brand of card is but the basic function of every automobile is practically the same to some degree and as far as I've been able to tell by looking at my own videos and the views of other creators and then assuming they have around a 10% click through rate it's somewhere around 3 to 5% of the creators total audience that those videos are initially being pushed out to so for example this video is initially going to be pushed out to around 700 to 12200 people within the first hour and based on a clickthrough rate of around 10% I'll get somewhere around 70 to 120 views give or take based on that clickthrough rate and notifications and so forth but generally speaking the larger you grow your audience the larger seed size you're going to have the more initial views you're going to get as the video starts and so the better your content performs with that initial seed audience the more distribution YouTube is actually going to give it to your other subscribers and so the challenge comes in for a small YouTuber when you only have 100 subscribers well your videos only initially going to be pushed out to a handful of people and based on that very small selection of people it's very easy for them because of so few of them to choose not to watch the video and if that's the case it's difficult for you to get views it's difficult for YouTube to actually distribute your videos because of the way that algorithms built because YouTube's

algorithm has a very strong connection to watch history and the connection that people have with your actual content such as subscribing other platforms like Tik Tok will show your content to people who have never seen you before because they're all about distribution whether people are connected to you through watch History or not and to be honest because of the nature of the content being so short and brief that's a necessary component but with YouTube and especially with long form content it's only practical to show long form content to people who are most likely going to be interested in it if the average session time on YouTube is 15 minutes how many people are going to take a chance on a 5minute video from someone they've never seen not a lot but as your audience begins to grow and you get more subscribers and thereby your SE audience or your engagement core begins to grow in size then you have more people and more opportunities to get click throughs and as you get those click-throughs and Views and you get those surveys on the back end where people are expressing satisfaction with the content then you pick up momentum and velocity and the video can gain more views and so forth as long as it keeps performing well and this is one of the reasons why you shouldn't post YouTube shorts to try to get subscribers if you're trying to build a long form content YouTube channel because the people who subscribe from your channel from shorts will artificially lower your clickthrough rate on your long form content when YouTube serves them because they're not interested in that they watch short form content which is why you see a lot of people who don't even post shorts at all they post is long form content and that's a very valid strategy and so something we all know when we publish a video is that there are two different audiences who are going to consume our content number one is the people that know us and number two don't know us or the way YouTube describes them is returning viewers and new viewers I believe and this is where things get interesting because I did not know this and I've never heard anybody talk about this before but YouTube tracks the metrics of both audiences separately and then they average them together to give you the publicly displayed clickthrough rate and the publicly displayed average view duration and YouTube explicitly stated that my particular video performed so well on day one because the clickthrough rate for returning viewers or subscribers as YouTube called them was 17. 8 or 9% which is around 18 % which you could just say 20% or one out of every five people I know I rounded twice but one out of five subscribers who saw this video on their homepage chose to watch the video and not only did they choose to watch the video but the same audience of returning viewers whom YouTube also describes the subscribers chose to watch the video for about 33 35 seconds longer than typical so instead of the typical 4 minutes and 56 seconds they watch for over 5 and 1/2 minutes both of these signals among my core audience of subscribers sent such a powerful signal to YouTube that YouTube then turned around and distributed this video to over 46,000 people on the first day so based on what I'm seeing from YouTube based on how their particular distribution system seems to work and based on how algorithms work in general I'm going to have to agree to disagree that subscribers don't matter they actually do matter More Than People realize and that's my first key takeaway that your subscri subcribers matter more than you actually realize so don't create content without thinking about them and what they're going to watch because this particular video was very important to my core audience this was something that no one was talking about and I was probably one of the first creators to publish a piece of content around it number two you need more than a great thumbnail to get people to click this thumbnail was not by any means or any stretch of the imagination greatly designed I made it in canva no Photoshop no fancy glowing stuff for any of that it's very basic and simple but the title of the video is also a trending topic so who's to say that the click-through rate isn't because this piece of content is something they're searching for and it's something that's relevant to them another takeaway is to always have calls to action inside of your videos or do something to get people to like the video I know there are people saying don't ask people to like the video they'll do it themselves but according to YouTube if your videos get more likes than usual that will contribute to the video getting more views in the future and keep in mind that there are two different audiences that you're serving at all times there are the people who know you your regular viewers your subscribers and then there are the people who are going to be meeting you for the first time every single video and don't forget to address both of them in some shape form or fashion during that video so before you upload your next piece of content make sure it's relevant and meaningful to your core audience first and then make sure that it's written and scripted in such a

fashion that it's able to keep a new person watching for as long as possible because they are not going to watch as long as your core audience and that's okay but we still want to keep them around for as long as possible so that the signal will sending to YouTube with the average view duration is as long as possible because click the rate and average view duration among your subscribers is actually more important among people who are not subscribed to your channel and if you're subscribed ERS give your video the stamp of approval by clicking through and watching for longer periods of time you can get past that break point and actually get out to see and get discovered by new people and if you're Cast Away you'll probably be found by other people who will take your channel in but I hope you got value out of this video and I hope it's able to help you think more practically about how to grow your YouTube channel by going deep with your core audience and really focusing on things that are meaningful to them and allowing the YouTube algorithm to give you distribution because of it if you got value out of the video make sure you hit the like button subscribe to the channel turn on notifications so you never miss a video and as always take care have a great day and I'll see you in the next video
