Step-by-step tutorial for Alfred

you know i'm willing to bet money whoever added this feature if you press command i on a folder or file whoever added the comments field right here they're trying to hide something because they'll name the folder something safe and innocent then using alfred they'll search for their secret stash of poor chicken pictures and try to hide that from everyone let's get started hi friends welcome back to channel if you're new here my name is jeff come for the alfred tutorial and stay for the extremely mature sense of humor all jokes aside navigating to the folder using the comments field can be very useful at number one your folder names are too long and inconvenient to type out or number two it's a shared folder with other owners and you can't just rename it to anything you want before we get

Settings Changes for Alfred

ahead of ourselves let's start with the basics under your keyboard settings go to shortcuts spotlight and make sure these two are unchecked because you're going to have the alpha hotkey set to command space then under your general settings it's important to note that whatever default browser you have here alfred will use that for the features we'll talk about in a little bit now i use the alpha command bar in four main ways and all the settings changes we'll go over today will correspond to each one of these use cases first with just command

4 Main Ways to Use Alfred

space i can open up any app that i want or run system processes like mt trash second with command space i can open any document or file that i know the name of and this relates to the initial comment field hack we talked about earlier third command space keyword for example yt for youtube and i can open up the search results in the default browser and finally command space command comma to bring up alfred preferences speaking of preferences
1:47

Default Results Preferences

let's start with features default results all these settings control what you see with just one command space and that's why i intentionally do not check any of the extra file types down here for example if i type in downloads right now nothing shows up but if i check folders and i do the same thing now the downloads folder appears and the reason i keep these extras unchecked is because i want to access these files using command space and you'll see why in the next tab i don't use apple contacts if you do you can check this one right here but i'm not fully on board with the whole dark side yet and i don't touch anything else on this page okay file search as the

File Search Preferences

name suggests this tab controls how you search for files on your mac and you do this by pressing command space and i don't want to show emails contacts calendars bookmarks history and messages but i do want files like images for example if i type in portugal i see these images if i check this and i do the same thing no results it's very clear how this works now right i usually actually limit my search results to 30. everything up here is checked under navigation tab here i uncheck these two shortcuts because i don't want to use the command bar for file navigation i just want to locate and open the file or folder like this and i don't change anything under buffer or advanced pro tip let's say you're searching for a file and you want to know where this file folder is instead of opening it you can press command enter to reveal the location in finder this actually works for apps as well and although most of the apps are in the default applications folder there are those products like google let's say and they're in a standalone location before moving on to keywords and custom search i highly recommend picking one app use every day one system process you execute every day and one folder like downloads you access every day and running those using only the alfred command bar i was overwhelmed with all of alfred's features at first and i found the fastest way to learn was to force myself to rely on the command bar as much as possible this even led to positive spillover effects for example in notion i'll press command p to search and navigate instead of relying on the menu bar on the left hand side here for supported system processes you can go to the system tab down here and choose which ones to enable for me i unchecked all the volume ones because i just used my keyboard for those and my top three favorite commands are definitely empty trash lock and restart for example it's basically muscle memory at this point for me to clean out my desktop then empty trash immediately right and i check confirm for empty trash restart and shut down just in case my muscle memory makes a mistake moving over to

Keyword Search Settings

web search everything down here should be enabled by default and this is where you can type in a keyword like google and perform a web search immediately um my first step here is to shorten the keyword of the common ones for example youtube i have as yt google you can double click change it to g maps as m the second tip is to add your

Add Custom Searches to Alfred

own custom searches and we're going to use giphy. com for this example we'll search for trevor noah from some very wholesome gifts and we're going to copy the url in the address bar here and then back in alfred add custom search paste the url and in this field we're going to input the character the website uses instead of a space in this case it's a hyphen right and then we're going to replace trevor noah with open brackets query close bracket like so for the title we're just going to put giphy keyword gif and we can test this and this works i guess this person is called alfred uh and back here pro tip what you want to do is actually use google images search for the giffy icon and once this loads drag this icon into your drop zone an app i talk a free app i talked about in a previous video go back to alfred and then drag the image into this icon little field here as if you needed any more proof how ocd i am then you can click save you'll now see the custom giffy keyword show up here and now you can search using the keyword like so uh and just to give you another example for google podcast that website uses the characters percent 20 instead of a space so this field depends on the website you're creating the custom search for pro tip number two you can choose to open up the url directly without performing a search for example album brings me to my google photos albums page where i upload a lot of your positive comments thank you for that and as you can see in the settings all i did was to paste the url of that website without the query word in curly brackets and this has saved me a bunch of time another cool thing you can do is to create your own application workflow using automator a free tool that comes in every single mac and using alfred you can actually run the application you create using the command bar if i press enter right now the text in my clipboard will be saved as a new document on my desktop i won't be diving into automator in this video but i will be doing one soon so make sure to be subscribed for that and maybe hit that like button while you're down there

Change Appearance for Alfred

moving over to the appearance tab here i'm currently using the alfred mac os dark theme and under options i hide the hat in the alfred window to keep this clean i show five visible results and because i have multiple monitors i always show alfred on the default screen and this basically sums up how i use the free version of alfred before i talk about the paid power pack features i have to say as much as i like this app and although i paid the one-time fee the vast majority of users do not need to upgrade it's like the 80 20 rule the free features 20 of alfred's capabilities are not even already makes an 80 difference in how you use your mac

Paid Alfred Features

that being said i'll quickly touch upon some of the paid features i find interesting and i look forward to learning from some of the real power users down in the comments so first up
8:21

Download Custom Themes for Alfred

you can actually download and import themes you find in the online alfred forums like you see here for example this minimal black m1 is a theme i downloaded second going back to
8:33

Clipboard History

features i use clipboard history i bring up my clipboard manager by pressing command option c like this but if you watch my mac apps for productivity video you know a great free alternative is an app called mackie next
8:48

Snippets Feature

feature snippets so this is basically text expander for example if someone messages me hey jeff how can i subscribe to your amazingly popular super practical no productivity newsletter and i'll respond with uh colin kotlin js newsletter and the entire url pops up and over time this saves me a lot of time moving on to workflows

Alfred Workflows Walkthrough

this is something i'm still trying to figure out so for now i'm cheating all i'm doing is just going online and searching for and downloading existing workflows i love this go to subreddit one from this uh contributor nikita volopoev so i can type in sub space one piece and i can start immediately reading up on one of the best mangas of all time and because i know a lot of you

Alfred vs. Raycast (my thoughts)

watching are die hard raycast fans i checked it out it seems amazing but i've always maintained the app you use matters less than the process and system you have in place so my recommendation for new users is alfred or raycast pick one and stick with it if you want to learn more about alfred check out this video from the productivity shop youtube channel i followed his original tutorial a few years ago so it's really thanks to him i'm using alfred today see you on the next video in the meantime have a great one
