I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :) ______________________________________________________________________ Contact youtube: youtube comments are by far the best way to get a response from me! linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tinaw-h/ email for business inquiries only: hellotinah@gmail.com If you're reaching out through linkedin, please leave a youtube comment just letting me know that you reached out :) ______________________________________________________________________ Links marked with * are tracking links that track traffic that comes from my channel. How I know I'm burning out

hey guys how's it going so today we're going to talk about the topic of burnout for me i usually know i'm about to burn out when i start doing specific behaviors the first one that usually shows up for me is pretending to work sometimes i manage to convince myself i am in fact working but the obvious signs of pretending to work are multitasking taking a break every 10 minutes to eat random things from the fridge and repeatedly checking email and social media to try to make myself feel better now obviously i don't actually get stuff done yeah i feel extremely exhausted from the constant contact switching and unfortunately this quickly becomes a vicious cycle for me i pretend to work and that makes me feel tired but then i feel guilty because i don't actually get anything done so i pretend to work harder which then makes me feel even worse and even more tired even more unable to get real work done et cetera basically a vicious cycle i also started coming up with a series of excuses for why i didn't get it done ranging from i'm too dumb to this project is so done uh basically anything but admitting that i'm actually burning out quite impressed by my own self-denial sometimes in fact this is kind of weird but the closer i get to burning out these stronger myself denial becomes and actually the more i try to push myself to do more so when i find myself agreeing to do things that i normally wouldn't agree to all right let's do it and just feeling a lot of fomo in general i know that i'm really in the danger zone unfortunately this is the state that i've been in for the past week or so what to do when this

What doesn't work

happens well unfortunately repeatedly telling myself and others about my goal doesn't seem to work very well nor does getting really angry and proclaiming that i will become the hokage for sure actually laying in bed and watching anime the whole day doesn't seem to work very well either so i thought instead of just telling you what i do let me both explain and show you since i took a day a few days back to unburden myself out let's go the first
2:17

Restart system of activities

thing i do is to restart the activities that are part of the system i have in place to prevent myself from burning out in the first place by the time i'm at the stage of burning out i could definitely somehow convince myself to stop doing some of these activities without going into my entire system because i feel like that is like in video in itself the two major things that are part of this preventative system is going on bike rides and cooking healthy meals for myself i think cooking healthy meals is pretty self-explanatory because a life field of fried chicken probably isn't great for your physical or mental health but let me expand on the bike ride a little bit it serves two purposes the first one is obviously physical exercise which has a lot of benefits the second one is that i treat it as a therapy session for myself when i go on these an hour and a half two hour bike rides my mind always begins to wander and all the things that i have to do my self-denial and just like stuff i'm worried about kind of bubbles into my mind and almost like kind of just like sorts itself out and by the time i'm done i usually feel very refreshed and have a plan of action it's quite interesting the way that our brains work it's not really about always focusing super hard on something sometimes it's just about letting your mind wander and all the connections that need to be made if they just get made subconsciously and then you have a way of moving forward for the rest of the day i generally pick

Deliberate indulgence activities

two activities that i know i enjoy as i mentioned earlier if i just lay in bed and binge watch anime for the rest of the day that actually doesn't make me feel much better i am not saying though that i don't watch anime because anime is almost always one of the activities the key though is to consciously decide to watch anime for a certain period of time does that make sense to you like if i just start watching anime without consciously deciding to do it then i end up feeling really guilty that i probably should be doing something else and then i kind of get back into that cycle of pretending to work but if i consciously decide to watch anime for a specific time period it's almost like i'm giving permission to myself to do that and that allows me to fully relax and just really enjoy um and be in the moment so yep anime is one of the activities uh by activity number one is actually reading
4:30

Learning activity

i'm currently reading trading in the zone since i've been interested in trading for a while and it's quite an interesting read generally reading or some sort of learning is always one of the activities i choose and this is a very conscious choice the reason is because a while back i did a quiz that was about figuring out your values at the time i thought it was just like some other fun but ultimately not very useful quiz but surprisingly the quiz has significantly made my life better i learned that by far my number one value is learning things and when i indulge myself in that value i end up feeling really energized i'll try my best to find that question link in the descriptions if i can find it so after reading a little bit i then went and made myself a nice home-cooked
5:15

Lunch

munch after lunch i played with bb bamboo
5:30

Pet pets

and just read some more and relax in bed then before dinner i took bubble out hormone
5:48

Dinner

and then it's dinner time i was kind of debating whether i was going to get takeout or not but i actually still have some chicken left in the fridge so i ended up just grilling some chicken for dinner and while i was eating dinner i did activity number two watch anime
6:04

Anime!

as planned i just continued watching anime until around 9 or 10 or so and then i did some quick chores to get ready for tomorrow and then i just brushed my teeth and got ready for bed after that day i felt much better afterwards and the next few weeks i'm gonna still keep trying to follow this normal system and recovery for now though i think i have managed to stop myself from a complete burnout i hope this video is helpful for anyone that's watching that might also be burning out and maybe this gives you some ideas on how to prevent your own burnout from happening see you guys in the next video or live stream
