Well, here's some wild math news today. A 40-year-old conjecture in harmonic analysis was just resolved in the negative by a 17-year-old. Hannah Cairo has solved the so-called misara Takawuchi conjecture. It's a problem in harmonic analysis closely related and linked to other central areas in the field. This is the article posted on the mathematical archive and it's about 15 pages long. Now, this is quite a wild feat. To give you some context, I didn't even learn any harmonic analysis until I was in my 20s, let alone thinking about problems in the area and let alone even resolving one of any kind. Typically, when you post an article on the archive, it has to go through quite a bit of vetting in order to be verified to be totally correct. So, there will be some time before this article is actually published, but it's sounding like experts in the area believe that this argument is actually sound and true. So, congratulations to Hannah Cairo, who will be going on to do her doctoral studies at the University of Maryland.
