Tableau Change Data source

today we're going to take a look at how to swap an old data source for a new especially when it's on tableau server all right so here we are inside tableau and what we want to do is switch this old database over from the 2018 version over to this new v24 version so the v24 is like a growing database so it's the same exact database that we had before except instead of locking the table out of 2018 they decided to change the name and add some other stuff i don't know this was just a request that came in so what i want to do is switch over from this over to this so in order to bring uh new database in you just go over to your data source tab and you just right click uh left click here click on your new data source you can go select tableau and choose a database bring it over pretty simple straightforward so now it gives me the option as you can see this one has a blue check mark and this one has an orange check mark what that means is the blue one is being used currently and the orange one's in the project but it's not being used what we want to do is actually put that into some type of usage so i'm gonna i want to get rid of this one and just use this one for the data so the first thing we'll do is we'll left click on the actual one that we want to change and we can go to the data tab right here or you can always feel free to just right click on it so you can do it either way both of the ways work so i'm going to go here and go to the data tab as i started out i'm going to go select the data source that i want and what i want to do now is i want to replace data source so it's going to say hey this is your current data source what do you want to replace it with in this case we're going that v24 data source that we just showed so i'm going to go here and i'm going to select v24 so it's going to take it from the 2018 over to the v24 we're going to hit ok and now a little warning box is going to pop up so if your data sources aren't consistent so if you're missing a column or the column name change you know if it detects something quirky tableau is going to actually give you a warning this is a message you want to send to your ic team let them know hey like this column right here is not the same or something like that let them adjust it before you make those changes because sometimes it will break your report so if this doesn't exist and the report needs it it's just not going to show the data it's going to crash and you know it's going to be what it is so i'll send that over to them let them know that we have two errors while we're switching over the data source but other than that everything is working perfectly i'm going to click ok and you can see the table just kind of updated changed and did whatever it needed to do so now we have that blue check mark on the data source that we want that v24 so in order to get rid of this again we'll just right click here and i want to close this data source out so i'm going to close that data source now um as some maintenance you probably do want to just remove that off a tableau server just so you don't have 15 different things that look almost the same but that's pretty much it you're pretty much done now this entire workbook is now changed over to this connection so that connection is running the rest of the workbook you can do it all in one place you don't have to do every single workbook or dashboard once you make the change on the data model the way tableau set up is it's linking everything and it says hey you want to switch the link cool i'm just going to feed it down to everything else and it's that simple so that is all we have for today that is how you switch data sources from one data source to another and you can do this in tableau sql um you know if it's a sql data source or anything like that you can always just switch it over using that command all right so thank you for staying too check out one of our other videos and we'll see you in the next one
