Introduction

hi there jamie keate here today at teachers  tech hope you're having a great day today   today i have 10 quick google classroom  tips for you to make sure that you're   leveraging google classroom as much as you can
0:13

Control your stream

tip number one is about helping you organize  your stream in google classroom so if you're   new to google classroom what i mean is the stream  if you look up top here there's this tab now this   shows everything that people post from the  classroom or you could have comments from students   going back and forth and i know i've made classes  before and haven't modified this and get a lot   of students commenting before i've set any rules  on it so tip number one is about making sure you   uh have your settings for this stream and where  you go to do this is go up to the settings gear   right up top here just open that up and you can  see if i go down into general and into stream   here we have some options usually when i start a  class i always i'll put it to this only teachers   can post or comment and then as different students  understand maybe the rules of collaboration   then i can change it you can see students can  only comment students can post and comment so   you can change that the other thing is  to think about how do you want your assignment   so when you post an assignment it will go into  the stream again it can get overwhelming for   a lot of students and then if you come down  to here and just drop down you can see show   attachments and details we could show condensed  notifications or hide notifications to this also   if you're a teacher you can see uh you can show  deleted items but that only works for the teachers   so make sure that this is kind of set before  you give your invite to the students or   invite or give the code to them to join in it  could save you a lot of hassle down the road
1:47

Manage your email notifications in Google Classroom

tip number two is about helping you manage your  email because if you use google classroom   before or if you haven't this is an important  tip you can get a lot of different emails that   you might not want from notifications of what  the activity is happening in google classroom   so this time i'm going to go up to the top left  here click on this and open it up check out this   settings here now if i open this up we can see  that there's email notifications and this is where   you can customize this so you could turn off email  notifications notice everything disappeared after   that so you're not gonna get emails but you can  go through and customize this uh how you want to   really only get the emails that you want because  like i said you can get too many emails that will   get your inbox all cluttered up from things that  you don't really need so take a look at this in   the settings and adjust it the way that would work  best for you tip number three is about making sure
2:41

Keep items at the top of your stream

that the most important information is getting put  at top of the stream or making sure that students   can readily see this like i said the stream  can get really overcrowded if it's not managed   right but look at this so these are different  assignments maybe you want the assignments to stay   at the top if you click these three one of these  three little buttons i'm going to move down look   at this move to top so if i choose that will  change the order to the top so if you want to make   sure something's staying to the top so students  can see it that when they get into their classroom   it'll be right in front of them because if you  don't it will get moved down as you go more and   more and more you can also do this in class work  so if i go over to classwork if you are getting   a lot of different resources remember you can  move these around just by dragging and dropping   them and there is the move up or move down in  here but for a stream like i said before this   is the part that gets get a little confusing to  new students using this where there's so much   information you want to keep that most important  thing on top that they need easy access to
3:48

Increase student engagement with questions

tip number four is about helping increase student  engagement using google classroom and how i like   to do this if i go over to classwork here if  with many of you probably created assignments   take advantage of the question because you can ask  a student you can ask the students a question so   i'm going to go ahead and click on this and i'll  just put a silly question in what is the best   ice cream you can choose multiple choice or short  answer on the way i'm just going to leave this as   a short answer watch out what i want you to take  a look at you can change this just to ungraded   but if you look down here students can reply to  each other so even if they were at home working   on something you could have a discussion  before they get back to class where you   could even get richer questions back to you so  try asking a question to see if that helps with   increased engagement using google classroom number  five is a super quick tip and that's a quick way
4:38

Email everyone at once in Google Classroom

to email everybody in the class so what we do is  go up to people here and here are the three people   in this example class i have but if i go ahead  and just click this notice the drop down on the   actions i can go and mute them remove them but i  can also email so i go click on email it will just   pick all those names and put them in an email you  can see here in their bcc to each of the students   and i can go ahead and write my message and send  it to all the people that i select tip number six
5:12

Differentiate your announcements and assignments in Google classroom

is about differentiation so whether it be in the  announcements or the assignments you can choose   who gets what let's do this as a little practice  with an announcement so i'm just going to announce   something to my class a lot of times people think  you have to announce it to everyone if i send a   message here i could post it and it would go to  all students and if i look at this i can select   what students i want so i don't need to send it  so i can select if i only wanted to go to one   and then that message would go to that so that's  in the announcements but also in assignments i'll
5:46

Assign assignments to multiple classes

just discard that if i go to create an assignment  you'll be able to see that the same thing is here   so maybe you have different assignments for  different students you don't have to send it to   everyone so this way you can differentiate and let  not let all the students know how who's getting   what assignments from you from google classroom  the other thing i wanted to point out and this is   the next tip is that you can assign to multiple  classes or announce to multiple classes so just   like this if you drop down here if you're teaching  more than one class you can select that this goes   to two classes this assignment and the same thing  with your announcements so if i close out of this   go back to stream and i go to this here and  i go to announce something again you can see   i can announce it to multiple classes so this will  save you time when management managing your google   classrooms tip number eight is another google  classroom management tip that can save you a lot
6:43

Reuse assignments

of time now i'm gonna go back over to classwork  the tab here and i'm gonna go to create and take   advantage of the reuse post in google classroom  if i go ahead and click reuse post this will go   through all the different classes i have so if i  go back you can see i could go to a specific class   in this now i could go through and pick a question  announcement everything is there material so you   don't have to re-upload and rewrite everything  again so even if it was a quiz i could pick a quiz   pick reuse and this is going to pop up here and  when it pops up then you can make any adjustments   that you need but in this case that you could  keep everything uh everything the same and then   you could go over to any adjustments that you  need on the right hand side and then go ahead   and assign it tip number nine is about using  rubrics in google classroom so if you haven't
7:40

Using rubrics in Google classroom

tried this before they're quite easy to set up  so if i go ahead and i'm just going to pick an   assignment that i've already created here and i'm  going to click edit assignment and you can see on   the right hand side here it says rubric i'm going  to go ahead and click on this you can create a   rubric reuse so once you've created your rubrics  you can reuse them again you can even import them   from sheet so if you've created rubrics and google  sheets you can bring them over for this example   i'm just going to go ahead and hit create and  then you can see right away are you using scoring   or not so if you didn't want to use any scoring  you can go ahead and turn this off now you can add   different criteria down below just by clicking so  you can have more and i can keep adding and then   we can add more levels so if i go add across we  can add more and more levels and we can fill in   the information in the title to each one and then  put the description you can delete these levels   too if you click these three little dots and just  like this and they'll go away go and hit the save   button and then that rubric will be attached to  the assignment and then you can reuse it over and
8:52

Make questions mandatory in Google Forms

over again tip number 10 and my final tip today is  about giving a quiz so if i go over to classwork   and i'm going to go create and quiz assignment  so this is going to create a google form   with this so you can see it's creating the google  form here what i just want to point out to you is   i'm going to click on this google form when  you go through and create your questions so   you could go through and you know you could give  it a question and everything what i want to just   point out is click this little required button  here because then they won't be able to submit the   uh the quiz until each one is answered so maybe  they forgot one and they tried to submit it or   it just gets them to answer the question making  sure that they've gone through all of them so i   hope these 10 tips have helped you out if you're  brand new to google classroom i have a i have   a tutorial for that i'll put down to a link  down below in the description let me know how you   use google classroom in other ways you'd like  to learn about it thanks for watching this   week on teachers tech i'll see you next  time with more tech tips and tutorials
