"Quishing" is a fraud trend sweeping the UK. 📈 Scammers are exploiting our reliance on QR codes by layering fake stickers over the real deal. From your favourite restaurant to your local car park, no QR code is 100% safe. 🛑 Stay one step ahead: 1) Inspect the code. 🔍 Look for signs of tampering or peeling stickers. 2) Use the official app. 📱 It’s always safer to go through a verified app than a random QR link. Watch the full clip to learn how to spot a "Quished" code before it’s too late! 🛡️✨ This is an excerpt from the weekly Money to the Masses podcast - available on Spotify and all podcasting apps. Segment 1 (00:00 - 01:00)

You are taken to a fake website. It could look like the website of the company that you are using. So, it could be the restaurant, for example. But, the fake website will steal your card or bank details, and then they can take money from your card or bank account. This scam is one that I'm particularly fearful of, and it's QR code jacking, or quishing. So, this is where the fraudster puts a fake QR code over a legitimate QR code in a public space. So, that could be on the payment machine at the car park. It could be over the QR code that's on the table in a restaurant. The QR code you usually would use to pay your bill, for example. They'll put a fake one over the top. And what happens when you scan these fake QR codes, you are taken to a fake website that could look like the website of the company that you are using. So, it could bank details, and then they can take money from your card or bank account. You could also get QR codes that are fake via email. So, this is a fraud that's becoming more prevalent, where you'll get one from an official retailer, apparently, and it will ask you to scan a code to process a refund. So, how do you avoid becoming a victim of these scams? Well, first of all, always be vigilant in a public place. So, if you see a QR code, check there's not a sticker that's been placed over the top of an original QR code. But, even then, I would say go directly to the website of the company if you're in any way concerned, and use their official app or their official site to process any kind of payment. And when it comes to QR codes in emails, then do contact the company directly if you have any concerns whatsoever.
